2 Welcome to Kristianstad The Biogas City In order to be interesting for business, the biogas sector must change focus so that its users are put center-stage. The City of Kristianstad, Krinova Science Park and Kristianstad University College are working to develop the biogas sector in close collaboration with regional businesses and various biogas players. We are working together with the entire value chain from raw materials from agriculture, the food industry and households to biogas production and vehicle fleets that use biogas as a fuel. We are quite alone in this. Our platform possesses unique power when it comes to the short stretch from research to practical implementation. Its cross-disciplinary profile lays a foundation for challenging out-of-the-box thinking. In this way, a hotbed for new business ideas is created that can be refined and tested with the focus on their commercial potential, often with the help of our professional stakeholders. In our open innovation arena, new thoughts are also grown and cultivated for market-adapted products and services. Business people and other representatives of the whole value chain actively take part with advice and action to make the journey quick and sure. Programs of technical visits, business development in open innovation and development projects on a regional, national and international level are the pillars of our organization. We also host the climate exhibition SuperVisions, which has a particular focus on biogas.

4 In Kristianstad there is a unique way of thinking holistically about biogas. We work with the entire value chain, from cradle to cradle, in a resource-efficient biological loop.

5 The biological biogas cycle Crops Crops are harvested and become food, feed or raw materials. Food industry Clean waste from the food industry comprise an important substrate in the biogas facility Animals Cattle, hogs and other livestock produce manure, which is an outstanding raw material for biogas production. Household waste The household s food waste is collected and becomes biogas. Biogas facility At the biogas facility, biogas is extracted from a slurry that consists of manure, food waste and byproducts of the food industry. Biogas is also extracted from sewage-treatment plants and garbage dumps. Refining Biogas can be used as a fuel in vehicles after refining Fuel The purified biogas goes to filling stations in Kristianstad where one can refuel one s vehicle with 100% genuine biogas. Fertilizer From the final products of decomposition in biogas production is obtained a nutritionally accessible fertilizer biofertilizer that is put back on the fields and crops. Biofertilizer can replace artificial fertilizers. Sewage From toilets and other parts of the household goes waste in the form of sewage to sewage-treatment plants, where biogas is extracted. The sludge is processed separately. Heat and electricity Homes, multi-family houses and offices receive heat and electricity that is partly produced from biogas.

6 RES-Chains RES-Chains (Renewable Energy Sources) is an EU project in the South Baltic area. The aim of the project is to promote sustainable and renewable energy supply chains. The focus is on applications of biomass, biogas, water, wind, and solar energy. Here, Krinova is working with partners in Småland, Skåne, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, and Denmark.

7 Identified challenges The biogas sector has a large development potential, and active work is required to overcome challenges to biogas. Certain biogas challenges can be solved separately, but most often it is collaborative solutions that provide the key to big steps forward in development. Krinova has chosen to focus on four challenges that are important factors in creating profitability in the industry. Substrate supply > The substrate side is interesting and complex, and must be developed. Competition for waste/substrate poses a large challenge. Infrastructure > The challenge consists of being able to distribute gas in an efficient way that builds on an infrastructure that is owned/operated by both producers and customers. Small-scale technology > There is a need for investment in innovation for small-scale production and small-scale use of biogas in order to strengthen competitiveness. Filling stations > Most of today s filling stations operate according to the terms of producers, not customers. We need more filling stations that are adapted to the requirements and preferences of modern customers.

8 The Biogas City! Kristianstad has been working with biogas for more than 15 years, and has developed a unique holistic perspective in which both waste from large-scale food producers, such as slaughterhouses, and food waste are used to produce biogas. In Kristianstad is Sweden s largest concentration of food producers, with a highly developed and rational agricultural sector that produces raw materials of high quality. Maintaining the right conditions for farming and the food industry is important for the municipality. In 1996, Karpalund biogas plant was built; today, it is one of Sweden s biogas facilities. The investment in biogas has strengthened the cooperation between the city and its rural surroundings, and involved many different players. In 1999, the Kristianstad municipality decided to become entirely fossil-fuel-free. Biogas is an important part of this goal, because carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles account for more than 50% of the total emissions of greenhouse gases within the municipality. Kristianstad is today more than self-sufficient in biogas, and exports gas to several nearby municipalities in the region. We are on the cutting edge of realizing the opportunities that exist for biogas. Krinova Incubator & Science Park is the hub in the development of innovations in the cycle through collaboration between the city and rural areas, academia and business. We work in accordance with human and natural conditions. Tomorrow s crossdisciplinary and boundary-crossing solutions are created here in relation to nutrient flows, water resources and energy in a sustainable society.
