1 Board Meeting Summary Castleberry I.S. D. Board of Trustees 315 Churchill Rd. Fort Worth, Texas (817) May 11, 2009 Castleberry ISD Mission Statement The Mission of Castleberry Independent School District is to graduate all students as lifelong learners who will excel in our changing world and competitive workplace. The meeting of Castleberry I.S.D. s Board of Trustees on Monday, May 11, 2009, was called to order at 5:30 p.m. at the CISD Administration Building. Board members present were: Dr. Bob Mullen, President; David Holder, Vice President; Mary Lou Martinez, Secretary; Doug Lee, Tracy Gallman, W.E. Bill Seybold, and Kenneth Romo. The invocation was given by Bob Mullen. Zaniyah N., 1 st grade student at Castleberry Elementary School led the United States and Texas Pledges of Allegiance. CONSENT AGENDA The Board of Trustees approved the Consent Agenda which included the following items: Board Minutes from the April 13, 2009 Board Meeting. Expenditure Report for the month of April Moving six modular buildings from Lake Worth ISD to CISD by H.D. Snow House Moving, Inc. for a Total Cost of $42,450.00: H.D. Snow House Moving, Inc. will be moving the buildings starting June 8, 2009 and it will be completed by June 18, Prospering Pals Purchasing Cooperative Interlocal Agreement: Child Nutrition uses the Cooperative to purchase Frozen Foods, Staple Groceries and Canned Goods, Paper and Disposable Products Multi-Regional Child Nutrition Cooperative purchasing Program: This report showed items that can be purchased through Region X cooperative in support of our Child Nutrition program. The Canine Team Contract with Interquest Detection Canine for : The district will continue to use Interquest Detection Canines for contraband detection. The cost will remain the same for the school year. Purchase and Installation of Classroom Presentation Equipment: Multiple outside funding sources have been identified and listed in the report to fund this project. All chosen quotes/vendors have met competitive bidding requirements. The technology department recommended the purchase of: 65 Smart Boards from Data Projections for $81,185.00, 64 Rooms cabled by Superior Fiber for $40,960.00, and 64 Rooms (cable, cabling parts and accessories, and screens) for $55, The State Waiver Application for Instructional Days missed and/or Low Attendance Days due to Weather, Health or Safety Issues. 2 ACTION ITEMS The Student Handbook and Code of Conduct: The board approved the proposed changes to the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct for The most significant changes were: 1) Add new immunization requirements. Starting August 1, 2009 seventh grade students will be required to receive one dose of the meningococcal vaccination, which protects against the illness that causes bacterial meningitis. 2) Bold information regarding change of address, telephone numbers, and moving within the district 3) Change restriction of piercings from earlobe to ear. The Bank of Texas as the Depository Bank for Castleberry ISD: After evaluating the proposals, Bank of Texas was ranked the highest and is in our District. We are currently working with Bank of Texas, as well. The Reorganization of the Board of Trustees Officers: Dr. Bob Mullen: School Board President of Castleberry Independent School District. Tracy Gallman: School Board Vice President of Castleberry Independent School District. Mary Lou Martinez: School Board Secretary of Castleberry Independent School District. ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES TRUCE Program Evaluation: The program evaluation for TRUCE Learning Center provides figures for the previous four years and five six weeks of this year. The report review the Enrollment Days that gives information relative to student enrollment capacity, Attendance Percentage, and Successful Day Percentage which is a computation of the successful days divided by the attendance days. Summer Enrichment Program: Information was presented regarding the district s Summer Enrichment Program for 2009, including hosting Castleberry students in the College for Kids Program. Tarrant County College Trinity River Campus will teach classes in our district to our students for a charge of only $10.00 per class. Highlights of the program include: 1) The program will run from June 8 until July 16. 2) Sessions will be 2-3 hours in length, depending upon the nature of the course. 3) Sessions will be offered both mornings and afternoons. 4) Grades included (based on school year) are Kindergarten through Grade 11. 5) CISD courses include Summer Reading, Fine Arts courses, Fitness Camp, and Problem Solving through Board Games. 6) College For Kids courses include Creative Writing, Art, Job Skills, Math, and Science. 7) Brochures are to be sent home within the next week. 8) Classes will have a minimum enrollment of six students, with a maximum of 20. An exception will be the Fitness Camp which can handle up to 30 students. FINANCIAL SERVICES Maintenance and Construction Projects Update: The Projects Update Report presented at the board meeting reflected work completed and funds expended through April 30, Preliminary Salary Recommendation: The Administration plans to give an increase; however, the amount of that increase will have to be determined later. At this time we do not know what action the Legislature will take to fix school funding (if any) and a better understanding of the effect the current economic conditions will have on our taxable values. RECOGNITIONS Recognition of Valedictorian and Salutatorian was presented by Laina McDonald, Principal at Castleberry High School: 2

3 Cara S. was recognized as the Valedictorian for the Class of 2009 at Castleberry High School. Cara is graduating with a GPA of Cara has taken six AP courses at CHS and has an average of 96 in these 6 classes. She will be graduating on the highest graduation plan the Distinguished Achievement Plan. Cara s one-of-a-kind personality has led her to have an unconventional sense of humor, self and vision for her future. She has been a member of the CHS band for four years. Cara plans on attending the Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas. Kevin H. was recognized as the Salutatorian for the Class of 2009 at Castleberry High School. Kevin is graduating with a GPA of Kevin showed his determination to excel academically by enrolling in four AP courses his senior year that commitment most certainly helped him this earn the honor of Salutatorian. He is unbelievably brilliant, creative and an amazing young man. Kevin has been a member of the CHS Jazz and marching band for 3 years. 4 Deonna Courtney, Principal of Castleberry Elementary PK1, recognized outstanding students and staff from her campus. Alonso H., a Pre-K student, was recognized for his love of learning, for always doing his best, and for being a good friend in the classroom. He shared a picture that he drew about a book his teacher, Mrs. Martinez, read to the class. He was joined by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Javier Hernandez, his aunt and uncle, his god-parents and his very proud teacher, Mrs. Martinez. Madison S., a Kindergarten student, was recognized for her outstanding class work and her positive attitude. Madison loves to read and also enjoys math games. She shared a writing sample from her journal about what she likes most about school and performed a math rap. Madison was joined by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Strange, little brother Luke, and her teacher, Miss Minyard. Zaniyah N., a first grade student, led the audience in the pledge to the U.S. Flag and to the Texas flag. She was recognized for her outstanding citizenship and the kindness and responsibility she shows in the classroom. She sets high standards for herself and works hard to achieve them. She brought a writing sample to share about the things she has learned this school year. Oleta Guin, a PEIMS Coordinator, was recognized for her outstanding service to the students, teachers, and community at Castleberry Elementary. Organized and accurate, Level-headed in challenging situations, Experienced, Tactful and respectful to all she comes in contact with, and Always looking out for the best interest of others that spells Oleta! Tiffany Hazard, first grade teacher, was recognized for her outstanding leadership and teaching at the CE PK-1 st campus. What started as her own desire to improve her teaching in her own classroom has grown into a campus-wide initiative, with Tiffany serving as a model teacher and coach to her peers. The success that our students are experiencing in comprehension this year can be credited, in a large part, to the diligent and self-less efforts of Tiffany. 5 Gene Lamb, Executive Director of Administrative Services, recognized: Jenny Clark, Elementary Music Teacher at Castleberry Elementary, was recognized for being named Score-A-Goal in the classroom outstanding Music Teach in North Texas. Mr. Ernie Horn, Score-A-Goal in the Classroom, presented to Jenny a special Chesapeake Energy Hero Award. In addition to the "Hero Award," Chesapeake Energy representative, Heather Snider presented Mrs. Clark with a $1,000 honorarium in appreciation of her outstanding contribution to our community's children. HUMAN RESOURCES The board approved the hiring of: Administration Executive Director of Curriculum, Laina McDonald. Laina McDonald has been in education for 25 years, with the last 10 of those being in Castleberry ISD. During that time she has served as a teacher, assistant principal, and for the last 7 years has been principal of Castleberry High School. Ms. McDonald earned her Bachelor of Science degree at Cameron University and her Master of Education degree at Wayland Baptist University. She has served on the Superintendent s Cabinet for the past two years, made presentations at professional conferences and is currently completing her Superintendent s Certification. 6

7 Castleberry High School Principal Principal, Andy Smith. Andy Smith has been an educator for 10 years, the last 7 being in Castleberry ISD. He has served the district as a teacher, assistant principal and associate principal. Mr. Smith earned his Bachelor of Science degree at West Texas A&M and his Master of Education at Tarleton State University. He also has served as summer school principal, made presentations at professional conferences and is currently completing his Superintendent s Certification.
