4 COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY Beginning Computers for Senior Citizens (55+) Instructor: Cindy Wyles Location: Room 133, Wilson Building Date: Sept. 11 FREE Day: Wednesday Time: 9:00-11:00 a.m. This course is designed for individuals who have never used a computer. Learn to turn on computer, navigate with a mouse, open programs, play games, surf the Internet, set up an account and send with attachments. Introduction to Computers Instructor: Cindy Wyles Location: Room 133, Wilson Building Date: Sept Day: Tuesday/Thursday Time: 6:00-8:00 p.m. Fee: $35 Do you feel confused, frustrated and lost when it comes to computers? All of the techno-babble is eliminated and replaced with simple explanations and hands-on learning in our computer lab. We ll start with learning what to do with the mouse and keyboard and other basic skills necessary to navigate around the computer. We ll work with Windows, the Internet and . Intermediate to Computers Instructor: Cindy Wyles Location: Room 133, Wilson Building Date: Oct Day: Tuesday/Thursday Time: 6:00-8:00 p.m. Fee: $35 This class provides a greater depth of knowledge about computers fundamentals. Individuals will work with Word, , internet searches, and other standard application on computers. Requirement: Introduction to Computers or basic knowledge or navigation with the mouse and keyboard. Microsoft Word 2010 Beginning Instructor: Cindy Wyles Location: Room 133, Wilson Building Date: Oct Day: Tuesday/Thursday Time: 6:00-9:00 p.m. A must for computer users looking to update skills for the modern workplace. This class introduces the participant to Microsoft Word Learn to create, edit, print and store simple word processing documents on a computer. Identify and use the Office Button; the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT); the groups and commands included in the Home Tab, Insert Tab, Page Layout Tab; identify the References Tab, Mailings Tab, and more. Introduction to Microsoft Word Instructor: Ed2Go Location: On-line course Dates: Aug. 21 Sept. 18 Oct. 16 Each session is a 6 weeks session. Fee: $89 On-Line Course Master the basics of Word In this hands-on workshop, you ll learn how to add, move through, and edit text. You will also learn to change margins, tab settings, run the integrated grammar, spelling checker and use the thesaurus. Along with save, retrieve, copy, organize and print your documents. But the time you re done with the step-by-step lessons you ll be able to use Word confidently at home or on the job. 4

5 COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY Microsoft Excel 2010 Beginning Instructor: Cindy Wyles Location: Room 133, Wilson Building Date: November 5-14 Day: Tuesday/Thursday Time: 6:00-9:00 p.m. This class introduces the participant to Microsoft Excel Participants will be able to understand and use common Windows elements; launch Excel; understand the concept of a spreadsheet; recognize Excel screen elements; work with toolbars; use menus; get help; create, format, and save simple spreadsheets with simple formulas. Upon completion of the course the participant will be able to create, edit, print and store simple worksheets on a computer. Introduction to Microsoft Excel Instructor: Ed2Go Location: On-line course Dates: Aug. 21 Sept. 18 Oct. 16 Each session is a 6 weeks session. Fee: $89 On-Line Course In this hands-on workshop; you will learn dozens of shortcuts, and tricks for setting up fully formatted worksheets quickly and efficiently. You ll also learn the secret behind writing powerful mathematical formulas and discover how to use the function wizard to quickly and automatically calculate statistics, loan payments, and more. Enjoy a workout that enhances the body s muscular endurance. Tone and strengthen your abdominal, chest and lower back muscles. Steps and weights provided. Bring an exercise mat to class. Senior Citizens Fitness Class (55+) Instructor: Don Thomas Location: Student Center Gym Date: August 26 Dec. 4 Day: Monday/Wednesday/Friday Time: 9:00-9:50 a.m. This popular class has grown over the years and gives seniors a feeling of health and well being while promoting strength. 6 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Sewing for Beginners Instructor: Anita Devillier Location: Wilson Building; room TBA Date: September 3-24 Day: Tuesday Time: 6:00-9:00 p.m. Learn the art of sewing! In this class we will focus on the basic sewing techniques needed for sewing garments and items for your home. Step-by-step instructions will teach participants the parts of the machine, measurements/correct sizing and how to read basic patterns. Projects: pillowcase; casual skirt or pants and ruffled tote bag. Supply lists will be furnished at registration. You will be required to bring your own sewing machine to class. Intermediate Sewing Instructor: Anita Devillier Location: Wilson Building; room TBA Date: October 1-22 Day: Tuesday Time: 6:00-9:00 p.m. Continue with the art of sewing! In this class participants will further their basic sewing skills by learning the additional construction techniques and how to read and custom-fit intermediate level patterns. Projects: blouse and tote bag with a lining. Supply lists will be furnished at registration. You will be required to bring your own sewing machine to class. Cricut Crafting 101 Instructor: Melodie Babineaux Location: Wilson Building; room 125 Date: October 7-28 Day: Monday Time: 6:00-9:00 p.m. Learn all about your circuit! In this class participants will learn the functions and step-by-step instructions on the parts of the circuit machine. Project will include letter blocks and signs which involves vinyl. There is a $5.00 supplies fee that will need to be paid to the instructor the first day of class. Just ONCE Piano for Busy People Instructor: Ed White Location: Room 125, Wilson Building Date: September 14 Day: Saturday Time: 12:00-3:00 p.m. Fee: $59 Some music teachers may not want you to know this, but you don t need years of weekly lessons to learn piano. In just a few hours, you can learn enough secrets of the trade to give you years of musical enjoyment. How do we do it? While regular piano teachers teach note reading, piano professionals use chords. And you can learn all the chords you ll need to play any song in this one session. Any song. Any style. Any key. If you can find middle C and know the meaning of Every Good Boy Does Fine, you already know enough to enroll in this workshop. There is a $29 materials fee for the workbook and practice CD collected in class by the instructor. Just ONCE Guitar for Busy People Instructor: Alan Richards Location: Room 125, Wilson Building Date: November 6 Day: Wednesday Time: 6:30-9:00 p.m. Fee: $59 Have you ever wanted to learn the guitar but simply find it difficult to find the time? In just a few hours you can learn enough about playing the guitar to give you years of musical enjoyment, and you won t have to take private lessons to do it. This crash course will teach you some basic chords and get you playing along with your favorite songs right away. Bring your acoustic guitar. Class limited to 15 students. For ages 13+. There is a $29 materials fee for the workbook and practice CD collected in class by the instructor. 6

7 PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES Basic Digital Photography Instructor: Eino Lilback Location: Room 125, Wilson Building Date: September 3-October 1 Day: Tuesday Time: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Intermediate Digital Photography Instructor: Eino Lilback Location: Room 125, Wilson Building Date: September 5-26 One Saturday 2 hours hands on portraits photography session Day: Thursday Time: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Photoshop Elements 11.0 Instructor: Eino Lilback Location: Room 133, Wilson Building Date: September 2-30 Day: Monday Time: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Learn the fundamentals of digital photography. Subjects covered include design and operation of basic digital cameras including pixels, resolution, file size, various camera shooting modes, exposure control, depth of field, elements of photographic composition, general camera handling techniques and other topics. Bring personal digital cameras to class. Learn about advanced digital photography topics including use of filters outdoors, close-up photography techniques, shooting panoramas, how to achieve maximum image sharpness, review and demonstration of image processing software, outdoor night photography, and high dynamic range (HDR) photography. The class will also optional include weekly indoor and outdoor assignments to be shared with class members plus an outdoor portrait session using both ambient and electronic flash lighting. Prerequisites: A basic understanding of digital photography as a result of attending a basic digital photography class or 2-3 years of hands-on experience. Learn to use Adobe s Photoshop Elements image processing software to edit, create and share your digital images. Improvements to Photoshop Elements 11.0 include an overhauled interface, refined selection tools, a guided edit mode, enhanced retouching tools, new tools to create composite images, special artwork effects, a streamline image organizer, simple image fixes and more. This is a hands-on course and each student will have computer access to practice various image editing techniques. No prerequisites, but a basic understanding of digital photography is recommended. 8 WORKFORCE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS Phlebotomy Instructor: Carol Gaspard Location: Date: September 9 Day: Monday Evenings Time: 5:00-9:00 p.m. Fee: $450 This 68 hour Phlebotomy course offers 32 classroom hours comprised of theory and hands-on training, as well as, scheduling for 36 hours of clinical time. Topics such as, but not limited to, equipment, technique, safety and infection control are covered in the required book. Practice begins on training devices and graduates to live skin. Techniques taught consist of capillary puncture, syringe, vacutainer, winged infusion sets and blood culture draws. On the completion of all course requirements a Certificate of Completion will be awarded. Note: This program does not include a national or state certification as part of its overall objectives. Mobile Crane Operator Certificate Instructor: Rodney Rhoades Date: TBA Day: Monday/Friday Must be accepted through Texas Workforce Call for more information Learn how to assess sites for access, usability, hazards and restrictions; operate in various weather conditions. Students will learn safety precautions through the proper use of mats, cribbing, and outriggers or crawlers, lift plans, hand signals and proper communication between work crew, a preoperational inspection and an operator checklist, as well as emergency response procedures. Operators will be able to verify the weight of the load, use load chart interpretation and solve capacity questions, use two-blocking, power lines, and public protection, load control and tag lines, transporting the crane and its components and a proper shutdown. Students will learn on both a fixed cab and swing cab mobile crane. Meets OSHA standard This training will include a certification examination for the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators. 9 FIBER OPTIC COURSES A fiber-optic technician, in a broad sense, installs and maintains fiber-optic systems and locates and repairs defects within these systems. There are a wide variety of employment and educational options within this field. Some general areas of focus include making sensors, performing optical inspections or working within the a certain field, such as lighting, communications or medical. Some of the jobs Fiber Technicians do: Splice cables, using hand tools, epoxy, or mechanical equipment. Inspect or test lines or cables, recording and analyzing test results, to assess transmission characteristics and locate faults or malfunctions. Place insulation over conductors or seal splices with moisture-proof covering. Lay underground cable directly in trenches or string it through conduits running through trenches. Install equipment such as amplifiers or repeaters to maintain the strength of communications transmissions. Measure signal strength at utility poles, using electronic test equipment. CFTO-Certified Fiber optic Technician Location: Wilson Building, room TBA Date: December 9-11 Day: Monday-Wednesday Time: 8:00 am 5:00 pm Fee: $ CFOST/T-Certified Fiber Optics Specialist/Test & Maintenance Location: Wilson Building, room TBA Date: December Day: Thursday & Friday Time: 8:00 am 5:00 pm Fee: $ CFOS/S-Fiber Optics Splicing Specialist Certification Location: Wilson Building, room TBA Date: December 14 & 16 Day: Saturday & Monday Time: 8:00 am 5:00 pm Fee: $ This introductory 3-day fiber optic tech course is designed for anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optic Technician. This Fiber Optic Training combines theory and 85% hands-on activities to prepare the student to take the CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) test that is sanctioned by the FOA (Fiber Optics Association) and given and graded the final class day. This course also introduces the student to industry standards governing FTTD (Fiber To The Desk), FTTH (Fiber To The Home), K-12 (schools), and explains Zone Vs. Distribution Cabling. Students will learn how to identify fiber types, recognize various connectors used in fiber installation; and install, terminate, splice, and properly test installed fiber cable to existing standards. Anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optics Technician should attend this class. This course is designed to offer specialist fiber optics training to anyone involved with the testing and maintenance of fiber optics networks. This advanced fiber optics training is strictly a practical course, but includes more background information than is typical in basic courses to allow the student to understand what they are testing and how to troubleshoot problems in long-haul and short-haul fiber optics network. Prerequisites: FOA Basic CFOT Course, CFOT/OSP (Outside Plant) Course, or any other Formal Fiber Optics Training Course within previous 6 months, or 1 year Fiber Optics Related Experience. If the student is not a CFOT or CFOT/OSP registered with the FOA, he/she must pass one of these exams prior to attending the CFOS/T course. This exam MUST be taken and passed prior to registering for the BDI DataLynk CFOS/T Course. This course is designed to offer specialist fiber optics training to anyone involved with the testing and maintenance of fiber optics networks. This advanced fiber optics training is strictly a practical course, but includes more background information than is typical in basic courses to allow the student to understand what they are testing and how to troubleshoot problems in long-haul and short-haul fiber optics network. 11 How to Register Registration may be handled in person at the Continuing Education Department at 506 Green Avenue. Full payment is required at the time of registration. Register by Mail Complete the registration form on the back of the schedule and return it with a check or money order to Lamar State College-Orange, Attn: Continuing Education Dept., 410 Front Street, Orange, Texas, Checks and money orders should be made payable to Lamar State College-Orange or LSC-O. Tuition payment MUST accompany all registration forms. Refund and Transfer Policies Students will receive full (100 percent) refunds if they cancel the enrollment agreement prior to the first class day. No refunds will be given on the first day of class or thereafter. Books and Supplies If a textbook is required, it will be noted in the course description. Supply lists will be distributed the first class day or at the time of registration for those courses requiring special materials. Faculty Instructors for non-credit programs are selected from various area businesses, industries and educational institutions, as well as from the Lamar State College-Orange faculty. If you are interested in teaching a continuing education class please call us at Continuing Education Units (CEUs) Students may be awarded CEUs upon the successful completion of specified courses. One (1) CEU is issued for every 10 contact hours. Certificates are awarded based on successful course completion for selected courses. Successful course completion will be determined by one of two criteria: (1) attending 80 percent of class meetings and/or (2) making a passing grade on course content. Class Cancellation A minimum number of students are required for each course. Classes with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled, registrants will be notified and fees will be refunded. Refunds may take four to six weeks to be processed. Register Early Don t delay. Register for the course of your choice as soon as possible. Classes have limited enrollment and fill quickly. OOPS! We cancelled your class because we didn t know you were interested. Sometimes excellent classes with super instructors are canceled because people wait to register. Our programs need a minimum number enrolled before a class can run. So, don t wait! Avoid disappointment by registering early! 11
