2 Welcome to Longbeach PLACE Our Values: Our friendly welcoming atmosphere, our diverse range of quality programs, our community focus Longbeach PLACE Inc. is a community based organisation which has been operating since 1975 within the City of Kingston and is part of the Southern Metropolitan region of Adult Community and Further Education. A range of programs, courses and activities are run by qualified facilitators, in response to community need. Through our educational program we provide members of the community with opportunities for lifelong learning and skills development. Access and equity: To be eligible for our ACFE Funded courses, you must be a permanent Australian Resident/Citizen, if not please check our fee-for-service prices. Every participant who meets the eligibility and entry requirements (if applicable) will be accepted into any educational program. Participants have equitable access to all programs irrespective of their gender, culture, linguistic background, race, socioeconomic background or disability. Some programs may have a limited number of vacancies and these will be filled in a chronological order upon completion of enrolment. Enrolment procedures will therefore be free of discrimination and if an individual does not meet entry requirements, all attempts are made to assist them in identifying an alternative course of action. Any issues/problems, can be discussed with the Manager. Your Privacy: Your privacy is important to us. Any personal information, collected from you, is kept secure and confidential. It is important that we have current contact details if you are attending classes and activities. Please contact the office if you need to update your details or access your records. 3 Short Courses Just starting with your ipad Cost: $45 Jump into the ipad revolution! This course is aimed at the beginner ipad user with very little experience. Learn the most useful apps found on your ipad including Mail, Safari and Camera. Send and receive s with confidence and browse the internet with your ipad. Enjoy some of the most exciting, free ipad features including FaceTime video calls and sending imessages to fellow ipad users. Examine your ipad s settings to put you back in control of your ring tone, wallpaper and password. Create an Apple ID and Account, and shop the itunes store for free music, books and apps. Manage your new books, music and apps in ibooks, Music and the App store. *Please note that in order to create an Apple account and download music, books and apps, students must be willing to purchase either an itunes voucher or a pre-paid credit card. Wednesday, 9:3am to 12pm 3 February to 23 March Code IT02 Tuesday, 9:30am to 12pm 7 June to 9 August (no on class 28 June & 5 July) Code IT10 Continuing With Your ipad Cost: $45 In this course we will be looking more in-depth into the world of the ipad. Some of the topics we will be exploring are types of apps and downloading them, using the camera, making family picture slideshows and easy ways to make videos, sync music, share calendars and to do lists, movies and TV. We will also look at community facilities that are available on the ipad, customise settings and much more, as well as address any questions or issues you may be having with your tablet. It is essential that you bring your own ipad to each class. Includes Certificate of Completion. Thursday, 9:30am to 12pm 4 February to 24 March Code IT04 Wednesday, 9:30am to 12pm 13 April to 1 June Code IT07 Social Media Using Your ipad NEW Cost: $45 In this very informative course you will learn how to navigate the world of social media on your ipad. We hear how scary sites like Facebook and Twitter can be. However, in this course we look at how you can stay in touch with family and friends, play online games, investigate your hobbies and interests, and stay up-to-date with current affairs, government organisations, celebrities and make your opinion count. We will also provide an overview of your mygov account and what you may be required to do. All while keeping your privacy safe. Topics covered include: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Online Games and the mygov website. It is essential that you bring your own ipad to each class. Includes a certificate of completion. 4 Meet the Mouse Computers for Beginners Cost: $45 This is a beginner s course for those with little or no prior knowledge or experience. Using Windows 7 you will learn to use the mouse and keyboard and learn how to personalise your settings. Learn the fundamentals of MS Office 2010 with word processing to create documents, print, save, basic formatting and an introduction to using the internet and . Includes a certificate of completion. Tuesday, 9:30am to 12pm 2 February to 22 March Code IT01 Thursday, 6:30pm to 9pm 14 April to 2 June Code IT09 Windows 10 NEW Cost $30 (Fee for Service Short Course) This course is for people who are already familiar with Windows 7 or Windows 8 but would like to upgrade to Windows 10. Participants must bring their own computers to class. Includes a certificate of completion. Tuesday, 1pm to 3:30pm 1 March and 8 March Code FFS06 Tuesday, 1pm to 3:30pm 10 May and 17 May Code FFS11 Broaden Your Computer Horizons Cost: $45 In this course participants will revise some of the subjects that were taught in the Meet the Mouse Course. It will also expand on some of the subjects covered (such as ), as well as cover useful new topics including Resume Preparation (formatting), File Management and Social Networking. The aim of this course is to assist you to further enhance your skills set for seeking employment or volunteering within your community. Includes a certificate of completion. Tuesday, 9:30am to 12pm 12 April to 31 May Code IT06 Tuesday, 1pm to 3:30pm 21 June to 9 August Code IT13 Broaden Your Microsoft Office Horizons Cost: $45 This exciting new course will cover Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Publisher. It is designed to improve your work readiness by building upon your existing knowledge, in order to further enhance your skills set for seeking employment or volunteering within your community. Includes a certificate of completion. 5 Digital Photo Editing - Introduction Cost: $45 (ACFE funded) (Amenities and materials fees $ Membership as applicable. (Basic computing skills essential) Begin your digital photography journey! This course is intended for participants with basic computer skills. It will focus on using and editing photos. Key features include using simple photo editing strategies, airbrushing and removing facial wrinkles, creating a photo slideshow with music, creating an online photo scrapbook and enjoying photo collages. Other exciting elements of the course include ing, printing, backing up and burning photos. This skills set could be extremely valuable in the workplace to assist with enhancing websites and digital displays. Includes a certificate of completion. Wednesday, 12:30pm to 3pm 3 February to 23 March Code IT03 Digital Photo Editing - Intermediate Cost: $45 (Basic computing skills essential) This course is a continuation of Digital Photo Editing Introduction and will examine more advanced digital photography skills. Students will examine Paint.Net (a free alternative to Adobe Photoshop Elements) and will learn to create, improve and transform images using a layered image editor. This will include gaining an understanding of layers to create collages, learning to place elements of one image into another image, removing unwanted scratches and small objects, correcting colour levels and altering a body shape to appear thinner or more muscular. This course will also provide a basic introduction to Windows Movie Maker including a basic understanding of importing and editing video clips. This skills set could be extremely valuable in the workplace to assist with enhancing websites and digital displays. Includes a certificate of completion. Thursday, 9:30am to 12pm 14 April to 2 June Code IT08 Digital Photo Books & Calendars Cost: $35 (Fee for Service Short Course) Do you have holiday shots that you would like to share with others? Or perhaps some family snaps that you treasure? Why not make them into a coffee table book or calendar? Make something that would be excellent for your own home or to give as a unique gift. Come along and join us and we will show you how to produce something special that will be cherished forever. Includes a certificate of completion. Wednesday, 12:30pm to 3pm 4 May to 18 May Code FFS10 The Secrets to Using Your Smart Phone (Android) Cost: $15 (Fee for Service Short Course) Demystify the uses and functions of your Smart Phone in a comfortable and friendly environment. In this course you will cover the basic uses of your Smart Phone including, changing ring tones, sending text messages, accessing the internet and Facebook among other things. 6 Start Your Own Business By De-cluttering Your Home with ebay Cost: $30 (Fee for Service Short Course) Got too much clutter around the home? Learn how to make extra cash to pay those ever increasing bills. This five hour course will cover the basics of buying and selling on ebay, as well as how to receive payments. Includes a certificate of completion. Tuesday, 1pm to 3:30pm 12 April to 19 April Code FFS07 Tuesday, 1pm to 3:30pm 7 June to 14 June Code FFS12 Writing Creatively Towards Your Future Cost: $45 This pre-accredited writing course will provide a learning pathway opportunity for further studies in accredited training and/or future employment opportunities. Within the 20 hour course learners will complete five hours of e-learning that will involve research into blogging, journalism, screen play writing, amongst other literary platforms that lead to employment opportunities. Includes Certificate of Completion. Thursday, 10:30am to 1pm 4 February to 24 March Code L11 Thursday, 10:30am to 1pm 28 April to 16 June Code L12 Next Step Stitches NEW Craft Workshops (Fee for Service Short Course) Sewing, Knitting and Crochet for those who want to further explore their skills. Introduction to Textiles, Terminology & Application to the Workplace and Further Education We are surrounded every day by textile material from what we wear to what we sit on, this age old industry is constantly evolving. 7 This 20 hour Pre-Accredited course will introduce you to the world of textiles and give you the building blocks to help you towards employment or further study within the industry. Part 1: Introduction to Basic Textile Applications Part 2: Beyond the Basics of Textile Applications The Next Stitch Part 3: Advanced Textile Portfolio & Pathways Development for Textile Applications Please telephone us on to register your interest. English Language & Literacy Classes Language and Literacy (Beginners to Intermediate Levels). (ACFE funded). (Amenities and materials fees $ Membership as applicable) Improve and develop communication and language skills, for everyday life or the workplace, with lessons in reading, writing, speaking and listening. An introduction to basic computer and internet work provides opportunities to develop communication skills through the use of computers. Our classes cater to the individual needs of people from English or non-english speaking backgrounds. Learning Circle Groups - Peer assisted and self-directed learning: Practice and learn English in good company with native speakers. Phone reception to make an appointment to see the Tutor. The cost for these courses is $60 for all students upon their first term enrolment each year (plus annual membership fee). Each term after that the cost is $40 for the remainder of the year ($20 concession). (If you are not a permanent Australian resident the cost is $560 per year for one class per week). Our Language and Literacy classes are funded by: Adult, Community and Further Education (ACFE). Saturday English Language & Literacy Classes (Beginners to Intermediate Levels). (ACFE funded). (Amenities and materials fees $ Membership as applicable) Learn English on Saturday mornings in a warm and friendly environment. Learn spelling, reading/writing and conversational skills whilst practicing on our ipad with tuition. Phone reception to make an appointment to see the Tutor. 8 Volunteering Volunteering in a Community Organisation Connect with your community through our volunteer program. Facilitator led training will focus on understanding the role of the volunteer, working on projects as part of a team to develop skills in communication, goal setting, creative thinking, problem solving, time management while helping others. Family History & Genealogy Introduction to Family History and Genealogy Cost: $60 (Fee for Service Short Course) A six week program of two hourly sessions that introduces you to what to look for, where from, how, costs, interpreting documents and putting the family history together. Tuesday, 1pm to 3pm 9 February to 15 March Code FFS02 Introduction to Family History Computer Based Programs NEW Cost: $60 (Fee for Service Short Course) A six week program of two hourly sessions that introduces you to the three most used computer based family history packages, Ancestry.com, Family Search (Latter Day Saints), and My Heritage. The course covers topics such as the initial costs and renewal fees, how to use the search facilities, and how to enter your family history details onto their charts, and how to use the print facility to publish your family history and genealogical charts. (Participants can use Longbeach PLACE computers or bring their own laptops and ipads). Thursday, 1pm to 3pm 11 February to 17 March Code FFS05 Each of the Family History & Genealogy courses requires a minimum of 5 participants to proceed. Participants will also need to pay $10 for the course folder that includes class presentations and handouts providing guides on searching sources for information on your ancestors' lives. Chelsea Family History Group Groups & Activities Chelsea Family History Group is a monthly gathering that allows people researching their family history to get together to share the experience, seek ideas to overcome blockages and get excited about what they have discovered in an informal setting. 9 The Chelsea Family History Group meets on the third Saturday of each month, starting at 9:30am and finishing at around 12:00pm. Group gatherings will feature guest speakers on a range of topics that cover many aspects of family history and genealogical research, as well as guides to help you on your journey, and provide access to computer facilities to peruse the web. Join us one Tuesday each fortnight from 7pm to 9pm. Phone for more information. Movie Afternoon Come along to our Tuesday movie afternoons, where you will watch a movie and have afternoon tea in a friendly environment and enjoy chatting with other fellow movie buffs. Movie starts at 3pm. Cost: Gold Coin per session plus $10 annual membership. Bookings are essential. Colour My World BYO book, pencils and paints and join with other like-minded colourists sharing conversation and friendship. Monday mornings from 10:30am to 12pm. Cost: $2 per session plus $10 annual membership. Yoga and Relaxation Monday evenings at 6pm. Phone for details. Cost: $8 per session plus $10 annual membership. Hatha Yoga This gentle form of Yoga is suitable for everyone. It deals with breathing techniques and meditation, and is extremely beneficial in assisting asthmatics with their breathing. In our sessions we will cover balance, strength, flexibility, harmony and self-control. Tuesdays from 6pm to 7pm. Cost: $90 for 10 sessions, plus $10 annual membership (total amount to be paid at first session). Facilitator: Elisa Goldenberg. 10 Bayside Book Group This friendly group welcomes new members and gives an opportunity for booklovers to get together to discuss books & make social contacts. This group also enjoys a meal together afterwards at a local restaurant/pub. First Saturday of each month 4pm 6pm. Cost: $2 per session plus $10 annual membership. There will be demonstrations of spinning, dyeing and weaving by some of Melbourne s most talented fibre Artisans, as well as interactive activities for adults and the children too! Visitors and participants will have the opportunity to purchase some beautiful fibres and yarns from our presenters. 15 Enrolment Information Bookings and Payments: Payment for our courses/programs can be made in person by using either credit card, cash or eftpos. Alternatively, they can be forwarded to our Post Office Box address, together with credit card details or a cheque. Cheques should be made payable to Longbeach PLACE Inc. All participants are required to complete and sign an Enrolment Form (available from our office or on our website). In order to secure a place in any course, fees must be paid 7 days prior to the scheduled commencement date. Please note: Your place may be lost if fees are not paid within this time. If you are unable to apply for your own place in a course, please advise us that the person acting on your behalf has your permission to do so. Course Materials: The cost of student requirements and materials retained by students are included in the total cost listed for each course. Payment by Invoice: The invoicing of any payments will attract an administrative fee of $5.50 (incl. GST). Third Party payments will be charged the full price of a course. Agencies referring clients, please refer to information on our website. Cancelled Courses: Courses are run subject to sufficient numbers to cover costs and funding commitments. To avoid disappointment, all fees must be paid 7 days prior to scheduled commencement so that student numbers can be counted. In the even that Longbeach PLACE Inc. cancels a course, all fees will be refunded in full, and you will be notified of the cancellation. Please therefore ensure that we have a current daytime contact number. Cancellations/Refunds: Longbeach PLACE Inc. is not responsible for changes in participants circumstances. Therefore, courses should be selected carefully. If Longbeach PLACE Inc. cancels a course, you will be notified and a full refund will be issued. If a participant withdraws during a course, or less than 5 working days prior to a course commencing, no refund will be issued. Prior to this (upon application) a refund may be issued, less a $10 administration fee. Eligibility: You will be asked to provide evidence of eligibility for an ACFE funded place. To be eligible, you must be a permanent Australian Resident, Australian Citizen, or approved Visa holder. If none of these apply to you, please check our fee-for-service prices. Concessions: Students with a Health Care Card or Concession Card in the family are required to provide a copy of the card to qualify for the concession rate. Indigenous students will be charged at the concession rate. Those claiming the concession rate are on a capped rate per course category for the year (plus amenities and material costs). Please note: The concession rate cannot be claimed where fees are paid by a Third Party. Hardship Provisions: Provision will be made for fees to be paid in instalments in cases of hardship. Applications are to be made to the Manager. For government funded courses, appropriate concessions or exemptions will be assessed for approval upon application. Tuition Fees: Tuition Fees for government funded courses have been set in accordance with Ministerial Directions on Fees and Charges in line with the Victorian Government Skills Reform Fee Structure. Tuition Fees are calculated at $1.08 per hour of tuition for Literacy Courses. Annual Membership: It is a Governance Committee Policy that all participants pay an annual Membership Fee of $10 upon their first enrolment in a program, course or activity during Term 1 and Term 2 for the calendar year 1 st January to 31 st December each year. Participants will pay a Membership Fee of $5 upon the first enrolment in a program, course or activity from 1 July to 31 December onwards each year. By joining, individuals are making a commitment to abide by our Member s Code.
