6 What is a vocational course? Advice for parents Vocational courses at are equivalent to A Levels; challenging, exciting and enable entry to university. They are mostly assessed by rigorous project work throughout the year, though tests and exams are part of assessment in some qualifications. For more practical university disciplines such as Media, IT, Business or Engineering; vocational learning can be a better preparation for higher education study. Our vocational qualifications are taught by staff with experience and skills from industry, in high-quality environments, which provide equipment as used in industry. Our students have lots of contact with the real world of employers and businesses through work experience, talks, visits or real-life projects. Students may undertake activities that develop skills of enterprise and entrepreneurship and take part in competitions. Making the right choice of organisation for study is critical. Whether it is to stay at school, go to vocational college or sixth form college full time; or whether to get an Apprenticeship and learn while earning. Getting a good start on the right course is essential. 18 year olds have to stay in education, but not necessarily at school Look at all the options available Take your child to Open Events Take any opportunity to attend taster events and days Look online for advice and information Vocational courses have a number of different names such as BTECs, NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) and VRQs (Vocationally Related Qualifications) and are available at different educational levels, so the study is appropriate as students develop their skills and abilities. Vocational courses at Entry, Level 1 and help students develop their skills and move towards work or higher level courses

12 Apprenticeships An Apprenticeship is a fantastic way to start your career with many businesses saying this is their preferred way to recruit. What is an Apprenticeship? As an Apprentice you will be employed by a company and be paid while you learn, working alongside experienced staff to gain job specific skills. You will build up experience, knowledge and skills that will help you to work towards a nationally recognised qualification. What is involved? You will be employed by a company, usually working four days each week with the majority of training done on the job. Your employer will train you in aspects of the practical work that you require to do your job. As part of the Apprenticeship programme you will be required to attend Rotherham College. This is usually one day per week and will provide you with the training that you need to succeed on your chosen career path. We expect Apprentices to be working in paid employment for around 30 hours per week. What are the advantages? There are many benefits in doing an Apprenticeship. As an Apprentice you will earn a wage, learn the skills and gain the knowledge needed to help you progress within your chosen career. An Apprenticeship takes you into the workplace and provides you with hands-on experience from your employer. You will be trained in the skills that employers need. Once you have completed your Apprenticeship you can progress either into employment, or move onto higher level qualifications. How long does it take? Apprenticeships vary, depending on the route you wish to take. Generally Apprenticeships can take between one and two years to complete. What different levels of Apprenticeship can I do? Apprenticeships fall into three categories, Intermediate (), Advanced () and Higher (Level 4) Apprenticeships. You must have employment lined up to be able to start an Apprenticeship. The College promotes Apprenticeship vacancies as they become available with employers, these can be viewed on our website at If you are keen to follow the Apprenticeship route but are unable to find suitable employment we can help by providing a course you can do in College that will prepare you for opportunities that come up
