7 Survey 2011 future maritime engineering educations in Denmark Carried out by working group formed by industry and university partners (shipowner, engine manufacturer, consultancy, class, authority, and 2 universities) 13 interviews with industry. Workshop with 60 participants from industry Report with recommendations to university and industry 7 Technical University of Denmark

8 Conclusions from survey Industry is lacking engineers > showstopper for economic growth Need for a combination of classic and new competences Multidisciplinary and practical approach 8 Technical University of Denmark

9 Main recommendations from survey 1. Increased visibility of the maritime industry at the universities and in the public. 2. The maritime industry should engage itself more and earlier in the maritime engineering education. 3. Value chain between research, education and industry. 4. Constant adjustment of course content at the universities in cooperation with industry. 5. University research should result in development, innovations, demonstration and research based teaching. 6. Defined new study tracks for BEng, BSc and MSc students Created two new courses: Economic and Environmental Performance of Ships and Maritime Engineering at Sea 3-4 times more students at MSc level Arranged study trips to attract more students Increased industry engagement through projects and guest lecturers Introduced new software (NAPA) used by the industry in ship design New PhD positions Information to tudents about the maritime sector and job opportunities in this sector (Tech Events) 13 Technical University of Denmark

22 Green Ship of the Future Green Ship of the Future is an open private-public partnership in which the Danish maritime community joins forces in order to explore, develop and demonstrate ambitious technical solutions for cleaner, more energy-efficient and sustainable ships and maritime operations. The project was launched in April one year before COP 15 in Copenhagen Green Ship of the Future secretariat has been co-located with Maritime DTU from summer 2015 and to-day 35 companies, universities and institutions are engaged in GSF. The secreteriat leader has the responsibility for GSF secretariat under guidance by an advisory board, where the importants issues are discussed. The first meeting under the new structure was launched on 1st October 2015 with great interest in defining new innovative projects (more than 10 new projects were discussed). 22 Technical University of Denmark

23 Orients Fund framework grant In January 2015 A/S Dampskibsselskabet Orients Fond made a framework agreement with Maritime DTU of a donation of a five year grant of DKK DKK, i.e. approximately DKK per year. According to the agreement the purpose of the grant is to: Support research and dissemination activities regarding maritime technology. The activities can be, but are not limited to: PhD projects, research projects, guest professorships and special activities and initiatives for children/students and other defined target groups. Contribute to an increase of the available resources to strengthen and develop the maritime profile at DTU. 23 Technical University of Denmark

24 Orients Fund The projects to be funded by Orients Fund are prioritised by Maritime DTU by the following criteria 1. Projects with substantial maritime content 2. Projects with a high degree of industry funding 3. Projects with a high degree of external funding 4. Projects within the identified strategic maritime research areas 5. Projects which otherwise fits into the strategy of Maritime DTU with respect to education, research-based consultancy or innovation 6. Interdisciplinary projects and activities 7. Projects which are founded in or support building up critical mass at DTU 24 Technical University of Denmark
