Organizers: Danish Society for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (Skibsteknisk Selskab) and Danish Maritime Society (Maritimt Selskab - IDA). Venue: IDA - Ingeniørhuset, Kalvebod Brygge 31-33, 1780 Copenhagen V. Introduction: The conference focuses on the latest developments in the optimization of ships energy consumption and thus CO2 emissions. Initiatives for new buildings and for existing ships will be described by different speakers. Three different new building concepts will be presented where the speakers will describe the fuel-saving applications built into their new designs. Ship owners will present initiatives and methodologies to reduce fuel consumption of existing vessels by retrofitting (new or modified installations) and by optimization of the operation. Classification Societies and other companies in the field will present tools and systems to support the improvement of the consumption. Also the economic aspects will be mentioned including how the charter parties can influence the motivation to reduce the fuel consumption. As always, there will be the opportunity to elaborate on some of the issues, as the speakers will have 5 minutes for questions after each presentation. There will also be breaks of a suitable length where discussions with other conference guests will be possible. Given that some of the guest speakers are English speaking, and the fact that we wish to attract foreign conference guests, the conference language will be in English. Registration: Registration via the web site: no later than 24th of October. 3 rogram Registration, coffee and rolls Welcome and opening of conference by Hans Otto Kristensen, senior adviser, Danish Shipowners Association. Boardmember of The Danish Society for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Key note speech: From New buildings to ships in operation by Jacob Buus etersen, director, American Bureau of Shipping The maritime industry is facing many challenges due to over-capacity in certain shipping segments and increased fuel costs, which has increased focus from ship owners and investors on technical optimization and innovation. The speech will address how this new situation has influenced on the ship design process; the contracts between ship owners and ship yards are evolving, model tests and CFD predictions are more important than ever and charter party contracts become more strict. The speech will also touch upon issues related to technical management and commercial operation of vessels which is also changing due to the higher focus on fuel costs. The importance of performance monitoring and performance management and how the knowledge from such disciplines will feed-back into the ship design process will be discussed C-Dragon - a compact container carrier concept by Dr. ierre C. Sames, SV Research and Rule Development, Germanischer Lloyd SE. Intra-Asian trades are becoming more significant due to the continuous growth of regional economies. At the same time, high fuel prices and new IMO regulations call

for more energy efficient ships. Taking both trends into account, Germanischer Lloyd has identified the need for a compact container carrier, called C-Dragon, optimised for operating on short roundtrips with many port calls and able to compete with cascading older tonnage Modern ECO-Designs by Odense Maritime Technology By CEO Kåre Groes Christiansen Coffee break Odense Maritime Technology are leading designers, engineers and project managers for the maritime industry, and maintain a number of container vessel platforms ranging from 2,500 TEU up to 18,000 TEU, optimized for energy efficiency. CEO Kåre Groes Christiansen will present their latest design for a feeder containership and describe how the vessel has been optimized for high energy efficiency and how energy efficiency impacts the slot cost Green Ship of the Future: Low Emission RO/AX study by Anders Ørgård Hansen, Managing Director, OSK- ShipTech. Boardmember of The Danish Society for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Claus Winter Graugaard, Head of Customer Service & Business Development, DNV GL Group. The study is driven by 14 partners within The Green Ship of the Future network. The possibilities and potential of reducing emissions and fuel consumption from a RO/AX ferry has been addressed.focus is on the technical elements within machinery, propulsion, alternative fuels and other areas affecting emissions. The study is performed for an existing Ro-ax M/S Visby with an already known operation profile to and from Gotland in Sweden, making it possible to benchmark the emission and fuel reductions against existing data.

Energy efficient operation of ships by Sven Dyrdal, naval architect, FORCE Technology. FORCE Technology has with participation from The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and different Danish ship owners, initiated a project aiming at developing a new generation of the decision support system SeaSuite, which has a highly integrated structure of different elements, such as calculation procedures, engine performance module and data sample system. The SeaSuite system is able to carry out a general energy optimization and improvement of route planning A study into the fuel savings potential by a major rebuild of propulsion system By er Rønnedal, Senior Manager, R&D, New Design, MAN Diesel&Turbo. MAN has conducted a pilot project on main engine and propeller optimization for existing vessels. Main engine modifications in way of taking cylinder units and turbocharger(s) out of operation was considered together with modification of existing, or even retrofit of complete new, propeller. The study considered the impacts on combustion chamber components, fuel equipment, bearings and vibration as well as propeller design.

Lunch Fuel savings potential beyond 15% was identified, and the pilot project has resulted in a further, more detailed study into the subject funded by Højteknologifonden, and working together with A.. Møller Mærsk A/S and DTU Retrofit opportunities for existing fleet By Thomas Eefsen, Head of Fleet Management Services, Maersk Maritime Technology. In order to optimize the fleet for fuel efficiency, Maersk Line and Maersk Tankers are retrofitting the existing fleet with various new technologies and initiatives. The initiatives cover a wide range of technologies, from replacement of bulbous bows to installation of frequency control for seawater cooling pumps. In this presentation Thomas Eefsen will provide an overview of retrofit opportunities for the existing fleet and discuss future challenges ractical approaches to vessel performance optimization by Kasper Moss, Head of the Technical Organisation, DFDS. The presentation will address the implementation of a systematic performance monitoring procedure and how DFDS shares knowledge amongst their fleet. The focus will be on the importance of involving the crew on board in order to achieve fuel savings.

Lauritzen Bulkers retrofitting of the existing fleet By Søren Roschmann, Head of Technical Department, Lauritzen Bulkers Coffee break The presentation addresses how Lauritzen Bulkers identifies candidate vessels and how to prioritize technologies. Their partnership with Grundfos and current projects will also be touched upon the presentation SEECAT and SEEM by Mr. Carlos Guerrero, Business Development Manager, Bureau Veritas, aris. Bureau Veritas SEECAT (Ship Energy Efficiency Calculation and Analysis Tools) models the energy flow in a ship. It ties together the emissions with the power generation, fuel type, propulsion resistance and navigational operational profile. The results are cumulative fuel consumption versus time and emissions versus time. The presentation addresses the input data, the analysis and the results and finally the postprocessing and optimisation. Requirements for SEEM (Ship Energy Efficiency Management lan) and related Bureau Veritas services will be also addressed Charterparties and fuel consumption by Jeppe Skovbakke Juhl, Naval Architect, BIMCO As every motorist knows, speed may be great for getting somewhere fast, but does alarming things to the fuel consumption! It is no different with ships, with fuel consumption varying approximately to the power of three versus the speed. At times when fuel prices are very high and can amount to some 50% of the voyage costs, substantial sums can be saved by throttling back the engine and steaming at a speed slower than the ship s normal service speed. The obvious question is however, why consider the benefit of energy and fuel savings if you do not have to pay for the fuel consumption? The presentation will go in details looking at the various charterparties and how they deal with fuel consumption Discussion and closing of the conference by Hans Otto Kristensen. Boardmember of The Danish Society for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
