2 The association Center of Maritime Technologies e.v. (CMT) - Centre of the national network of maritime innovation

3 CMT is the successor organisation of the Forschungszentrum des Deutschen Schiffbaus e.v. (FDS) (German Shipbuilding Research Center) that was founded in Hamburg in The promotion and coordination of projects involving collective industrial research in the German shipbuilding industry were among its main tasks. The establishment of CMT marks an extension of its activities into both other maritime areas and European projects. The association s goal is to strengthen research, development and innovation in the maritime industry by promoting cooperation between the various players in industry and the academic world. The members of CMT come from shipyards, the marine supply industry, shipping, providers of maritime services, the academic world, universities and government agencies. CMT represents the central hub for a network of maritime expertise: As a central point of contact for innovative tasks and ideas in the maritime sector. As information broker and contact point for passing on research-relevant data and expertise and for follow-up utilisation of research findings. As a coordination point for maritime R&D-activities in Germany and Europe, in paticular by building up and coordinating effective R&D networks. In initiating innovation, research and development by providing information and advice as well as administrative and specialist back-up. Through research into commissions facilitated by its own capacities in selected specialist areas. In doing strategic development work for companies, business sectors and the entire maritime industry. In promoting European integration by cooperating in European bodies and contributing to shaping European research activities. By creating interfaces between members as well as other players in the maritime industry.

4 Membership activities / Briefing events Coordinator and information broker for the maritime industry

5 CMT s core competence consists of the preparation, planning and coordination of R&D projects in the maritime industry at national and European level. CMT provides members with every support in the search for project partners and applications for subsidies, etc., as well as administrative and technical handling of privately financed, national and European research projects. These services, moreover, are also available to non-members. In cooperation with IMAWIS GmbH, industry associations, Schiffbautechnische Gesellschaft and other partners, CMT prepares and holds briefing events on current research programmes, subject-oriented workshops on topics offering big potential for innovation, and international conferences on specific themes. Strategic research requirements and project ideas are combined together and taken into consideration in the preparation of national and European support programmes. CMT uses an extensive network of universities, research facilities, industrial companies and industry associations to promote cooperation of players in the maritime sector at national and European levels.

6 Collective Industrial Research Research for the maritime industry

7 CMT is a member of the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations Otto von Guericke (Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen Otto von Guericke e.v.), an organisation comprising more than 100 industry-based facilities pursuing collective industrial research. On the principle of helping those who help themselves, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology provides supporting funds for its projects. Being application-based and conducted prior to the intrusion of competition, what is known as collective research falls between fundamental research and company-specific development of products, processes and services. Proposals for subjects for collective industrial research projects originate from the companies involved. As a rule, research is done in university institutes or research facilities. Within the constraints of the available budget, CMT s technical-scientific committee selects those subjects for research that best correspond to the requirements of its member firms. CMT supports research facilities in making applications, runs a committee to keep an eye on the project and work in progress, and publishes a final report that renders the findings of the project accessible to all its members. A list of completed and current projects involving collective research can be found on CMT s website ( Apart from backing for collective industrial research by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, CMT also gives members access to other opportunities for receiving support. In addition, industrial research projects are also implemented without benefit of public funding.

8 EU Integration European Integration through research and innovation networks

9 The maritime industry consisting of shipyards, system suppliers, classification societies, shipowners, ports, firms in the offshore industry, providers of services and research facilities is a significant factor for the German and European economies. In view of intensifying global competition, in the R&D area, particularly, European cooperation is becoming increasingly significant. Accordingly, CMT represents its members in a large number of European bodies devoted to the coordination of maritime research and development. The following, especially, deserve: COREDES the research and development working group of CESA the European Shipbuilding Association CESA (national contact point), EMECrid the R&D Coordination Group of the European Marine Equipment Council (national contact point), ECMAR European Cooperation Group in Maritime Research (national representative). In addition, Dr. Frank Roland, CMT s chief executive, is a member of the technical committee of EuroYards Group and of the European Commission s advisory group on the priority theme Sustained land and sea transport in the 6th framework programme. CMT cooperates actively in the WATERBORNE European technology platform, and coordinates a series of European projects designed to create scope for European research, such as, e.g., ENCONA and ENCOMAR (

11 For German and European shipbuilding, especially, with its pronounced bias towards complex, single products and small series needing a mass of equipment, effective planning and control of production logistics presents a special challenge. A growing number of shipyards are using incident-orientated simulation as a tool for mastering a whole variety of planning tasks. CMT can offer case studies for the setting up or reorganisation of shipyard departments, investigations into internal ship logistics, the development of tools for resource and series planning in everyday shipyard operation, as well as consultancy services in support of in-company simulation projects. Membership of the network SimCoMar (Simulation Cooperation in the Maritime Industries along with its partnerships with other developers of maritime software, enables CMT to draw on an existing stock of simulation modules and to offer integrated solutions.

12 Innovative structures and production processes, lightweight construction Product innovations for the maritime industry

13 Development and utilisation of new materials from compound materials to lightweight metallic structures contributes towards cutting running costs and reducing manufacturing costs. CMT is actively engaged on various research and development projects on the design and manufacture of lightweight structures and the incorporation of these into ship structures. The focus here is on modular solutions with integrated equipment systems. CMT, moreover, possesses extensive expert knowledge in the following areas: Experience in research into the technical aspects of production, Design of lightweight structures and connections for these, Assessing and registering new processes and design solutions, Planning of statistical experiments, Innovative assembly techniques, Laser welding in cooperation with IMAWIS GmbH, SLV Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and other partners. With its know-how on design and the technical side of production, CMT contributes towards breaking through the traditional borders between these specialisations and in exploiting synergies. When required, here CMT can call on the resources of its partners and members.

14 Environmental protection and safety for shipping and ports Safe and clean ships and shipping

15 The safety of shipping and reduction of emissions and waste discards by ships is the crucial prerequisite if maritime transport in Europe is to remain sustainable. The European Commission outlined the main goals in this area in the green book The Future Maritime policy of the EU: A European Vision for Oceans and Seas. The repercussions of ships on the maritime environment and safety in sea traffic are significantly influenced by decisions already taken at the design and production of ships. New developments in materials and changes in production processes and of the legal parameters necessitate continuous research, development and innovation. Systematic risk analyses of such marine catastrophes as those involving the Erika and the Prestige can be of valuable assistance here. CMT cooperates on projects investigating these accidents and thus defining the requirements of the shipbuilding industry and the ship s officers. Maritime anti-corrosion measures, innovative paints and coating systems, as well as their repercussions on the environment, are important areas for the work of the CMT. CMT is a member of the Protection of the Marine Environment Schutz der Meeresumwelt working group of the Norm department for ship and marine technology Normenstelle für Schiffs- and Meerestechnik (NSMT 02.11) in the DIN organisation and of the Environment working group in the European Maritime Industry Forum (MIF).

16 Groupware and IT solutions Solving problems in shipbuilding

17 Efficient IT solutions can assist companies in exploiting knowledge potentials, in collectively solving complex technical challenges and in optimally organising working procedures. CMT s combination of shipbuilding expertise and IT skills provides it with rapid access to special know-how drawn from shipbuilding and other maritime fields. Here CMT and IMAWIS GmbH jointly use databases. Solution of complex interdisciplinary tasks of the kind that arise in the early stages of designing a ship, for example, calls for networked working environments and suitably adapted IT solutions. GRID technologies facilitate access to decentrally created methods and in addition, to computer resources using specialised service providers in a shared working process. In cooperation with IMAWIS GmbH, CMT arrives at groupware solutions. The range offered covers analysis of processes in running, development of optimal process solutions, implementing this as a programme presented in the form of a system solution, as well as support on its introduction. The fields where groupware solutions are used include internet-compatible document databases, workflow applications and office communications as well as solutions. In tackling complex challenges, CMT cooperates with external providers of software services.
