2 1 Title, affiliation and language A shared section that applies to all BSc and MSc Programmes at the Faculty of Science is linked to this programme-specific curriculum. 1.1 Title The MSc Programme in Agricultural Development leads to a Master of Science (MSc) in Agricultural Development with the Danish title: Cand.scient. (candidatus/candidata scientiarum) i naturressourcer og udvikling. 1.2 Affiliation The programme is affiliated with the Study Board of Natural Science and Environment, and the students can both elect, and be elected, to this study board. 1.3 Corps of external examiners The following corps of external examiners is used for the central parts of the MSc Programme: Corps of External Examiners for Agricultural Science (jordbrugsvidenskab). 1.4 Language The language of this MSc Programme is English. 2 Academic profile 2.1 Purpose As graduates will face a great variety of situations in their professional lives, the general aim of the MSc Programme in Agricultural Development is to enable students to identify the critical aspects of professional situations within natural resource management within food, fibre, feed and fuel production in developing and transitional countries and to be able to describe the patterns characterising these situations. The aim is to give participants the scientific knowledge and skills required to implement and manage research or advisory activities related to agricultural production, economics, environment, and human nutrition and food science in a development context. Students are encouraged through interdisciplinary, multicultural real life experiences to see the whole context of the systems encountered. 2.2 General programme profile The MSc Programme in Agricultural Development encompasses all critical aspects of agriculturally related development activities, from soil fertility management to rural livelihood strategies. The learning approach is a combination of field-related experiences, teaching in traditions and methods related to data collection in complex real life situations, and discipline-based specialisations. The MSc Programme in Agricultural Development is a combination of: An interdisciplinary field-oriented common part which includes training in techniques for gathering data under a variety of field conditions combined with training in the research process. A selective part which facilitates specialisation. The thesis, which includes fieldwork in the setting of a developing country. Agricultural Development is the key subject area of the programme. 3 2.3 General structure of the programme The MSc Programme is set at 120 ECTS credits. There are no defined specialisations in this programme. 2.4 Career opportunities The MSc Programme in Agricultural Development qualifies students for a PhD programme, and depending on the academic specialisation it may also be targeted at business functions and/or areas such as: Universities and research institutions where graduates are involved in research. Development agencies (public or NGO) with national and international scope where graduates are involved in implementing, managing and monitoring development programs or projects. Government bodies where graduates are involved in policy related activities. Private companies within food and agro-industry dealing with third world products or issues. Consultancy and project design and evaluation. 3 Description of competence profiles Students following the MSc Programme acquire the knowledge, skills and competences listed below. Students will also acquire other qualifications through elective subject elements and other study activities. 3.1 Competence profile On completion of the programme, an MSc in Agricultural Development has acquired the following: Knowledge about: Agricultural development theories. Current research and advanced theories in relation to sustainable use and management of natural resources in developing countries. The theoretical basis of qualitative and quantitative data collection methodology, including interviews, questionnaires, surveys, and rapid appraisal techniques. The critical aspects of professional situations within natural resource management in relation to agricultural activities and describe the patterns characterising these situations on the basis of field work experience from rural areas in developing countries. Interdisciplinary and intercultural work. Skills to: Apply relevant project planning, data collection and evaluation methodologies such as logical framework approaches in complex field settings and in research planning. Participate in academic discussions on agricultural development and relationships to other study programmes. Critically distinguish sustainability and livelihood issues in relation to natural resource management. Identify, analyse and communicate a research question from a complex setting to broader audiences, both professionals and non-professionals, at a variety of levels, using modern and appropriate information and communication tools. 4 Competences to: Participate in public discussions on an academic level regarding natural resource management in a global context in the role of researcher, advisor, policymaker or programme employee or manager. Display independence, integrity and develop new relevant knowledge and skills when working in complex field settings on an individual basis, in teams as well as in crossdisciplinary and intercultural environments. Use interdisciplinary, multicultural real life experiences to analyze the whole context of the systems encountered. Display awareness of ethical and moral questions related to the management of different natural resources and take these into account when working in different cultural settings. Manage research, advisory or management activities related to the area of sustainable use and management of natural resources in developing countries within Tropical Forestry, Animal Science, Crop Production and Protection, Development Economics, or Human Nutrition and Food Science, depending on the student s choice of core and elective courses. Carry out research-, adviser- or policy-related activities within agricultural development in government bodies, non-governmental organisations, research institutions, development agencies or international industry bodies. 4 Admission requirements Students are admitted to the MSc Programme in Agricultural Development once a year, with studies starting on 1 September. 4.1 Applicants with a closely related Bachelor s degree Applicants with a Bachelor s degree in Agricultural Economics, Agrobiology, Animal Science, Biochemistry, Biology, Biology-Biotechnology, Food Science, Forest and Landscape Engineering, Geography, Landscape Architecture or Natural Resources from the University of Copenhagen, other Danish or Nordic universities are directly academically qualified for admission to the MSc Programme. 4.2 Applicants with a Bachelor s degree in Global Nutrition and Health Applicants with a Bachelor s degree in Global Nutrition and Health from UCC & Metropol may also be admitted if their programme includes the following: Elective course, Internship and BA thesis with an orientation towards natural science and development perspectives. 4.3 Applicants with a related Bachelor s degree Applicants with a Bachelor s degree in Agriculture, Development Studies, Environmental Science, Rural Development, Anthropology and other BSc graduates from the University of Copenhagen or other Danish or international universities may also be admitted if their programme includes the following: 60 ECTS credits natural science or resource economics course modules and in addition: Thesis or project work with Agricultural Development orientation. 4.4 Other applicants The Faculty may also admit applicants who, after a thorough academic assessment, are deemed to possess a Bachelor s degree with educational qualifications equivalent to those required in Subclauses Page 4 of 12

5 4.5 Language requirements Applicants from Nordic universities Applicants with a Bachelor s degree from Nordic universities must as a minimum document English language qualifications comparable to a Danish upper secondary school English B level Non-Nordic applicants Applicants with a non-nordic Bachelor s degree must be able to document English proficiency corresponding to an IELTS test score of minimum 6.5 or a TOEFL test score of minimum 213 (computer-based), 560 (paper-based) or 83 (Internet-based). 5 Prioritisation of applicants If the number of qualified applicants to the programme exceeds the number of places available, applicants will be prioritised as follows: 1) Applicants with a Bachelor s degree in Natural Resources from the University of Copenhagen. 2) Applicants with a Bachelor s degree in Agricultural Economics, Agrobiology, Animal Science, Biochemistry, Biology, Biology-Biotechnology, Food Science, Forest and Landscape Engineering, Geography, Landscape Architecture from University of Copenhagen. 3) Other applicants with a Bachelor s degree in Global Nutrition and Health. 4) Other applicants with a Bachelor s degree in areas of agriculture, development studies, environmental science, rural development or similar. 5) Applicants within the area of anthropology. 6) Other applicants. Applicants are then prioritised according to relevance of their study program, including elective courses and project work, defined as ECTS credits within the subject area Agricultural Development. 6 Structure of the programme The compulsory subject elements, restricted elective subject elements and the thesis constitute the central parts of the programme (Section 21 of the Ministerial Order on Bachelor and Master s Programmes (Candidatus) at Universities). All of the compulsory subject elements (including the thesis) defined below must be followed at the exact time planned according to the table in Appendix 1. Restricted elective and elective subject elements may be freely placed in the remaining blocks. 6.1 Programme components The programme is set at 120 ECTS credits and consists of the following: Compulsory subject elements, 30 ECTS credits. Restricted elective subject elements, 30 ECTS credits. Elective subject elements, 15 ECTS credits. Thesis, 45 ECTS credits. Page 5 of 12

BSc subject elements corresponding to 15 ECTS credits may be included in the MSc Programme without the approval of the study board. Projects outside the course scope may be included in the elective section of the programme with up to 15 ECTS credits. The regulations are described in Appendix 5 to the shared section of the curriculum. Projects in practice may be included in the elective section of the programme with up to 15 ECTS credits. 7 6.1.4 Thesis The MSc Programme in Agricultural Development includes a thesis corresponding to 45 ECTS credits, as described in Appendix 2 to the shared curriculum. The topic of the thesis must be within the academic scope of the programme. There are programme specific rules which define parts of the shared curriculum in more detail. The following specific rules apply to this programme: The thesis must be written full time. The thesis must be based on at least three months of fieldwork in a developing country. The data for the thesis are expected to be collected during this period. The fieldwork may be combined with an internship at international organisations, NGOs, universities or similar. Students will obtain financial support from the supervising department in connection with thesis fieldwork under reservation of fulfilment of course requirements Academic mobility The academic mobility in the MSc Programme in Agricultural Development is placed in block 1+2 or block 3+4 of the 1 st year. This means that the curriculum makes it possible to follow subject elements and conduct projects outside the Faculty of Science. In addition the student has the possibility to arrange similar academic mobility in other parts of the programme. Both options require that the student follows the rules and regulations regarding pre-approvals and credit. 6.2 Compliance of the requirements for external examiners and assessment The MSc Programme automatically fulfils the requirement that one-third of the programme's ECTS credits must be subject to external examination and two-thirds of the ECTS credits must be assessed by grades, cf. the Shared Section of the BSc and MSc Curricula for Study Programmes. ECTS credits transferred are excluded from the calculation of the requirement for external examination and assessment by grades. 7 Exemptions In exceptional circumstances, the university may grant exemptions from the rules in the curriculum specified solely by the university. 8 Commencement etc. 8.1 Validity This subject specific section of the curriculum applies to all students enrolled in the programme see however Appendix Transfer Students enrolled on previous curricula may be transferred to the new one as per the applicable transfer regulations or according to an individual credit transfer by the study board. 8.3 Amendment The curriculum may be amended once a year so that any changes come into effect at the beginning of the academic year. Amendments must be proposed by the study board and approved by the Dean. Page 7 of 12

8 Notification about amendments that tighten the admission requirements for the programme will be published online at one year before they come into effect. If amendments are made to this curriculum, an interim arrangement may be added if necessary to allow students to complete their MSc Programme according to the amended curriculum. Page 8 of 12

10 Appendix 2 Interim arrangement for Agricultural Development 2015/16 The Shared Section of the BSc and MSc Curricula for Study Programmes 2014 (rev. 2015) applies to all students admitted in the academic year 2015/16 or earlier. 1 General changes valid for students admitted in the academic year 2014 or earlier Structure of the programme Students admitted to the MSc Programme in the academic year 2014 or earlier must finish the programme with the original curriculum structure under which they were admitted, as shown in the table below: Compulsory subject elements, 22.5 ECTS credits. 12 Appendix 3 Description of objectives for the thesis After completing the thesis, the student should have: Knowledge about: Bordering subject areas to main specialization. Alternative approaches or methods. Skills to: Collect empirical data using preselected tools. Analyse collected data using appropriate framework, including statistical methods. Present objectives, methods and results in a clear and comprehensive way. Discuss results in relation to literature in the subject area. Draw general conclusions from results, and respect the limitations of the specific data set. Competences to: Plan, perform and evaluate an empirical study in a developing country. Critically evaluate data quality and appropriateness of methods. Operationalize an objective, via development of testable research questions, selection of appropriate methods and relevant sources of information.
