3 Welcome Never before has an effort been made to strengthen employment in the offshore sector that has been as massive as that made through the development project Offshore Energy. For 3 years, more than 100 companies, organisations and other players have contributed to making the project a success and, with Offshore Center Danmark as responsible for the undertaking, a wide Director Peter Blach range of initiatives have been taken to create jobs and attract qualified staff and students to the sector. One of the objectives of Offshore Energy has been to create new jobs in the offshore sector. The number of jobs has risen from 13,500 to 19,000 today, which means the objective has, indeed, been achieved. It is far from certain that Offshore Energy has been directly involved in creating all the new jobs, but we should be pleased that the offshore sector is capable of generating new jobs and growth at a time when other industries are suffering stagnation. Another objective has been to strengthen the range of training courses related to the offshore sector and attract young people to the sector. This work will go on in the coming years in that there is still a need for many qualified employees and a need for making young people see opportunities in the offshore sector. The concluding conference on February 27 will mark the end of this ambitious project. 3 years of intensive work will finish, but the many initiatives, ideas and new collaborations will be carried on through new projects. New products have been created, constructive ideas have led to new concepts and ways of collaborating, and the sector has proven that it is possible to work together to achieve a common goal. The participants in Offshore Energy and everybody else who has followed the project deserve to be thanked greatly. Many people have put in a great and indispensible effort, and the team at Offshore Center Danmark are convinced that Offshore Energy has made a strong and lasting impression. The 3-year development project ends with a conference on February 27 3 years of work involving more than 100 partners will be over when Offshore Energy is completed on February 27. A large number of results will be presented at the conference, and both the individual initiatives that have been taken and the project s overall goal of creating 7,000 jobs in the offshore sector by 2020 will be discussed. Managers of sub-projects, external experts and other invited speakers will go through analyses and initiatives at the conference and state whether they believe the projects have been successful and which initiatives they consider to be worthwhile to develop further. Marianne Thorlund Tølbøll, Offshore Center Danmark, has been overall responsible for Offshore Energy. She says: The offshore sector has grown from 13,500 employees in 2009 to 19,000 in 2012 and, even though it is hard to say how big a part of the growth that Offshore Energy can be credited with, there s reason to be pleased and proud. The offshore sector is doing really well and, if we ve somehow done our bit to push development in the right direction, I believe the project has been a success. She adds: The important thing now is that the initiatives that have been launched in connection with the project are taken further so they can continue on their own steam. And it s gratifying that several initiatives are being realised and that there s a dialogue with specific manufacturers that are to make the products that have been invented through Offshore Energy. Finally, it has been ascertained that the individual sub-projects have been established in a way that makes it possible to take the next steps. Thanks to everybody More than 100 companies, organsations, and educational establishments have been involved in Offshore Energy and, even though it has been a challenge to find common ground among so many participants, support has been overwhelming. This is one of the reasons that Offshore Energy has provided so many visible results. Marianne Thorlund Tølbøll says: A lot of ideas have been presented about how the offshore sector can develop in a positive way, and all kinds of ideas have been discussed. Not least has a great effort been done into research and development in connection with the project that has lead to many favourable initiatives. 7 Good ideas lead to success in offshore sector A series of idea generation days have produced many suggestions for new products and solutions Good ideas lead to success in the offshore sector. On the basis of this notion, a range of workshops have been organised over the 3 years in which the development project Offshore Energy has been running. The sole aim has been to generate ideas for new products, concepts and ways of collaborating. Especially the sub-project Substitution of Materials Offshore has made use of a string of workshops to gather producers and operators for them to enter into a dialogue. Operators and large suppliers have been asking for solutions to specific problems, while producers from, for instance, the plastic industry, have come up with suggestions for solutions that can make existing solutions lighter or cheaper. Project Manager Marianne Thorlund Tølbøll, Offshore Center Danmark, is overall responsible for Offshore Energy. She says: Idea generation workshops help launch a creative process where no ideas are considered bad. This brings about a good debate and makes people who are taking part think interesting thoughts. And it ensures that the Danish offshore sector preserves its brand as an efficient and innovative industry; these are the parameters that we use to compete internationally. Scores of ideas The most recent workshop was organised on November 28 last year, where 7 working groups transformed scores of loose ideas into 7 specific suggestions that will be further developed also after Offshore Energy has ended. The most concrete result of the various idea generation conferences have lead to the development of a multi-purpose cabin made of plastic. The cabinet has the significant advantage that it weighs much less than other similar solutions in steel or aluminium. Depending on the specific model, it will be used for a range of purposes from ordinary storage through to electric installations and many other purposes on offshore installations where the light construction is a great advantage. The multi-purpose cabinet is still only a prototype, and Bente Nedergaard Christensen from Plast Center Danmark hopes ON/OFF NEWS - February

8 it will be possible to put it into production in the near future. As a sub-project manager, Bente Nedergaard Christensen has been heading the development of the cabinet. She says: Many people have contributed to the development of this product, and a lot of work has been done to complete the prototype, so I m sure the result will be a very functional cabinet. Many types of ideas The various idea generation conferences have provided many new types of ideas with the common aim of making things efficient, reducing costs or in some other way strengthen the offshore sector. At the conference in November last year, Ole Brøndum from the organisation Veteran Cross Over described the way in which a good idea means that soldiers who have returned home from missions abroad now have the chance to find jobs in the offshore sector. The organisation represents Danish veterans and has initiated collaboration with the offshore sector about providing the soldiers with a brief training course after they have ended their military careers which, in turn, will remedy the shortage of labour in the offshore sector. All this means that Project Manager Marianne Thorlund Tølbøll is very pleased with the many different ideas that have been the result of Offshore Energy. She says: We ve seen earlier how these idea workshops have brought about ideas for specific products, new ways of collaborating and other very useful initiatives that can strengthen the offshore sector. So I m convinced that it s both productive and necessary to invite people to these kinds of informal events once in a while where everybody can come up with ideas and interesting thoughts. Bente Nedergaard Christensen from Plast Center Danmak has been heading the subproject Substitution of Materials Offshore that is responsible for the great amount of work done to develop a special multi-purpose cabinet for the offshore sector. 8 ON/OFF NEWS - February 2013

10 Offshore Academy to help young people train for jobs in offshore sector Permanent centre for career guidance and knowledge-sharing may be established An effort to attract more young people to the offshore sector has been an important element of the development project Offshore Energy. 2 different subprojects have revolved around training and career opportunities, and a range of initiatives will now be followed up on also after Offshore Energy has ended. Marianne Thorlund Tølbøll from Offshore Center Danmark and project manager of Offshore Energy says: A great effort has been done to ensure a balance between companies expectations and the range of training courses that are available and to make visible the sector to job-seekers and people who are studying. The entire training structure has thus been strengthened after Offshore Energy has been running for 3 years. The range of courses has been strengthened and coordinated in collaboration with the sector, campaigns have been run to have more young people train themselves in the offshore sector, and various open house events and 24-hour camps have been organised for young people with a desire to become involved in technical matters or research. Finally, A 24-hour camp at Aalborg University Esbjerg about wave energy was the first camp that was organised; it illustrated what young people think is interesting and what may make them choose specific educations. an attempt will be made to attract finance for a permanent guidance centre where guidance on training and career opportunities can happen under one roof. Poul Viggo Fischer, Education Manager with AMU-Vest, is responsible for realising this aim. He explains: The idea is to gather the range of train- 10 ON/OFF NEWS - February 2013

11 ing courses in a kind of Offshore Academy, where we can help young people choose a relevant course and where we ll have the resources for doing research and facilitating knowledge-sharing in the field of education. Esbjerg Municipality is among the players that are considering supporting an Offshore Academy, and AMU-Vest and a range of partners are also going to work on developing the concept and attracting finance. 24-hour camps will be organised again Concurrently, Aalborg University Esbjerg has been looking at how people can be attracted to the courses in the energy field in order that the need for labour in the offshore sector can be met in future. Special 24-hour camps where young people have had the chance to try out what it would be like to be an offshore technician have proved very popular. These camps have been organised as the result of an idea that emerged in connection Offshore Energy, and Aalborg University Esbjerg expects to organise 24-hour camps also in future. The university is aiming for the new natural science recruitment offers from the project to become permanent. Tove Morell, Aalborg University Esbjerg, explains: The camp concept provides pupils with professional sparring from university researchers and company experts and makes it possible for groups of pupils to test their own suggestions for solutions for the great challenges we re facing today in the field of energy. The aim is to make young people interested in natural science, technique and educations in the field of energy. She is supported by one of the educational establishments that has had the pleasure of inviting a great deal of young people to a camp. Lars H. Andersen, principal of Esbjerg Technical College, says: It s been useful for our students to learn what it s like to go to university, and we ve seen the result of their efforts. When they re at a camp, they completely forget about breaks, leisure pursuits and jobs outside school and are eager to achieve a result within the agreed time frame, and that s what they ve done. After having taken part in a camp, they long to move on in their training. GREAT OPPORTUNITIES How to become an attractive supplier in the offshore industry There are great opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises in the offshore industry. Suppliers to the Danish offshore companies sell goods and services to the tune of DKK 15 billion. And employment is expected to grow by several thousand over the coming years. But it s not easy to get a foothold Bureau Veritas 59,000 employees are serving 400,000 clients in 140 countries. But with offices in Esbjerg, Kolding, Fredericia, and Copenhagen we are always close to the Danish companies operating in the offshore industry, says Peter Balleby, Manager at Bureau Veritas, Denmark. in this industry, says Peter Balleby, Manager at Bureau Veritas in Denmark, who has been helping small companies ready themselves for the industry s strict requirements. Requirements and qualifications Bureau Veritas is accredited to certify companies according to quality, environment, health, and safety standards that are relevant in the offshore industry. These formal requirements may seem overwhelming to a small company, so our focus is to help them identify what is necessary in order to become attractive suppliers to the big operators, says Peter Balleby. Strategic changes In some cases Bureau Veritas has also proposed strategic changes. For instance that a number of small companies work together to offer a more comprehensive package of competencies than they could do individually. Peter Balleby is convinced that the whole process is worthwhile for ambitious companies that want to develop. Once you are licensed to work in the Danish offshore industry, you re well on your way to new opportunities in the rest of the world. bureauveritas.com ON/OFF NEWS - February

12 TV programme portrays development project Offshore Energy The programme describes successful 3-year effort to enhance employment in the offshore sector 3 years of work to strengthen employment in the offshore sector and attract young people will now be portrayed in a TV programme that will have its premiere immediately after the project s concluding conference on February 27. Shootings began at the conference in November, and the final footage is planned to be shot during the concluding conference. The result will be a 25-minute programme that will be broadcast on the Danish TV channel DK4 in March. The programme is to be shown times in the spring and will also be available on DVD. TV hoast and producer Mick Østergaard from Best Media is preparing the programme for DK4. He says: We see this as an obvious opportunity to document the great effort that s being done on behalf of the offshore sector through a project such as Offshore Energy. The sources that we ve talked to have very different approaches to the project but, when you listen to what they re saying, they re painting a picture of a thriving sector that involves a lot of enthusiastic people. He adds: We ve talked to politicians and people from the offshore sector and not least to the experts who ve helped identify the fields that should be focused on in future to strengthen the offshore sector even further. Naturally, we ve also talked to companies that ve benefitted from the TV producer Mick Østergaard (left) involved in the preparation of footage for the programme on Offshore Energy. To the right is Product Manager Peter Dahlgaard from the company Sihm Højtryk, which is one of the companies that went through a development process in connection with Offshore Energy. A lot of people also visit the website each month to read news and download brochures. In addition to a large number of newsletters, the website has continually been updated with articles and news on Offshore Energy. Since the first article was published on December 18, 2009, almost 130 articles covering interim results and advance publicity of future events have been issued. Rømø Havn ON/OFF NEWS - February

16 Offshore sector assisted by soldiers Soldiers who have returned home are to relieve personnel shortage in the oil and gas sector The cavalry will literally be coming to the rescue of the offshore sector in an effort to relieve the shortage of qualified labour that is a result of heightened activity in the industry. While other sectors are experiencing unemployment, the offshore sector s problem is quite the reverse: it is hard to attract staff with the right qualifications and a desire to work in the North Sea or in western Jutland. The shortage of labour means that some companies involved in oil and gas extraction in the North Sea and internationally are having to reject new assignments simply because they do not have the staff to carry out the work. However, help is now on the way, and it will be coming from a group of soldiers who have returned home from missions in Afghanistan and Iraq or from other of the world s hot spots. Ole Brøndum, founder of the organisation Veteran Cross Over, says: This is a group of people who are used to tough weather conditions and to being stationed far away from home, and they also have the discipline required for performing the jobs to which they re Soldiers are often as young as in their mid-20s when they apply for civil jobs after having ended their military careers abroad. Some of these soldiers will have the opportunity to find jobs in the offshore sector. assigned. On the other hand, they don t have the resources to embark on a 5-year education when they ve finished their careers in the Danish Defence. This is why it s almost a perfect solution to have them help the Danish offshore sector after a few weeks of training. 16 ON/OFF NEWS - February 2013

17 27,000 candidates Veteran Cross Over is a new initiative that is to help some of the around 27,000 soldiers who have returned home from missions abroad with a job or further training after their military careers have ended. The soldiers are often in their mid-20s when they leave the defence and obtain status as veterans. Many of them have a practical education from the defence or from civil business in their luggage; however, they still find it difficult to find a job. This is the reason that the offshore sector and Veteran Cross Over are collaborating to remedy the shortage of labour and supply the veterans with jobs. Companies such as Semco Maritime have so far had a veteran training with them for 4 weeks and are contemplating including more veterans. This can happen as interested veterans complete a brief further training course that includes, for instance, mandatory safety courses and basic courses. Jens Holm-Nielsen, Vice President of Semco Maritime and responsible for HR, says: We have a great need for new staff with the required qualifications, which is why we re keen to talk to Veteran Cross Over. If the veterans have the qualifications that are fundamentally necessary for working offshore, they ll definitely be interesting to us. The collaboration between the offshore sector and Veteran Cross Over has been initiated in the wake of the development project Offshore Energy in that 2 of the project s 5 sub-projects focus on training and career opportunities. One idea among many The collaboration with Veteran Cross Over was presented at a workshop on Wednesday October 28 last year, where representatives from the offshore sector and the educational establishments were gathered for an idea generation day to discuss how the offshore sector s shortage of staff can be remedied and open the way for further growth. In addition to the idea about training returned soldiers for the offshore sector, scores of small and big ideas were presented as well. These ideas have since been assessed by a working group with a view to choosing those that can be realised for instance in collaboration with external investors. 18 Offshore sector helped to find its inner strength A value chain analysis has been an important part of Offshore Energy A prerequisite to achieving one s aim is knowing where one wants to go. This applies not least to an ambitious development project such as Offshore Energy. One of the main tasks of the project has therefore been to analyse and chart the offshore sector to highlight strengths and define effort areas. This work now benefits all companies that are considering which fields of business they are going to focus on in future. At an early point in the project, Offshore Energy identified strengths and effort areas by means of the so-called value chain analysis, prepared by Oxford Research, which outlined the composition of the oil and gas sector. The analysis made it possible to identify effort areas and opportunities for entering the sector. No matter where a company is placed in the offshore supply chain, it is thus possible to decide whether there is a need for changing one s strategy or whether one s company is focusing on the right business opportunities. Oxford Research state in their analysis that Danish know-how is in a strong position thanks to, for instance, what Danish consultancy firms can offer and because of Danish skills in the field of safety and preparedness training. However, the analysis has also helped turn the spotlight on training in connection with Offshore Energy in that this field Projektet Energi på havet har det overordnede formål at skabe fornyet vækst og beskæftigelse i offshorebranchen. 20 Companies provided with useful tools for moving into offshore sector Offshore Energy put companies back on the school bench One of the cornerstones of the development project Offshore Energy was to motivate more companies to involve themselves in the offshore sector. Experiences from before the project began and analyses of opportunities and challenges indicated that especially small companies were skeptical of the sector s tough requirements; which explains why they did not attempt to enter this industry at all. However, the companies reluctance to attempt to enter the offshore sector often has to do with misunderstandings and lack of information, and Offshore Energy therefore worked as a platform from which a range of initiatives were taken to break down barriers and strengthen opportunities for companies in the sector. The tools were thoroughly tested and adapted by the help of workshops with participation of sub-suppliers and guided learning processes involving 20 pilot companies. The result was a compendium that was completed on January 22, The compendium can be downloaded here or ordered from Offshore Center Danmark against a fee from March 1, Michael Ahring Petersen, manager of the sub-project Offshore Supply, says: We hope the compendium will be useful to many more companies, either through self-study or by means of assistance from an experienced person from the offshore sector who can help a company understand what should be done. Furthermore, a booklet version has been prepared with the aim of inspiring interested companies to qualify themselves for entering the offshore oil and gas sector. The booklet is available in electronic form and in a printed version and can be ordered from Offshore Center Danmark from March 1, 2013 while stocks last. The portal offshore-supply.dk provides information on the various tools from the compendium, and the competence wheel and other tools can be downloaded from the site as well. When the project began on March 1, 2010, a working group under the subproject Offshore Supply was asked to prepare a compendium with the aim of easing companies entry into the offshore sector or grow in the offshore oil and gas market. In 2010 a working group was appointed, consisting of Bureau Veritas, Force Technology, Ocean Team and Business Kolding. The group s aim was to present a clear and useful tool that would help companies know about and understand the many requirements from operators and main suppliers that sub-suppliers must live up to. The working group has been given positive feedback from companies that have piloted the compendium, which indicates that the aim will be achieved. 23 Safety Award to be presented on April 18 The prize will be awarded at the Task Force Zero conference Annette Gram Hansen from Maersk Oil, winner of the Safety Award The award will be presented again in May this year. For the second year running, Offshore Center Danmark and the networking group HSSE will be awarding the Safety Award, which is to make visible the effort done to improve safety in the offshore sector. The Safety Award 2013 will be awarded at the conference Task Force Zero on April 18, where the offshore sector will be gathering to exchange views on safety in the offshore sector and discuss how it is possible to achieve the overall aim of entirely avoiding accidents in the sector. Tommy Petersen, project coordinator with Offshore Center Danmark, says: Although we see relatively few incidents, it s always important to focus on safety. Most incidents occur because of human errors, and we hope the Safety Award will help maintain our focus on safety to remind employees that safety is also a personal responsibility. He adds: We ve received many nominations for the award and, no matter whether you re a tough oil drill worker or whether you re based in an office onshore, it s crucial that everybody is aware they have a responsibility for their own as well as for their colleagues safety. Safety is very much about conduct and about the right attitude in the workplace. It s also impor- tant to be able to spot opportunities for improvements; there are many ways in which to boost health and safety in the offshore sector. The winner of the Safety Award 2013 will be announced when the award is presented, and it is still possible to nominate candidates. The award may be given to an individual, a branch, a company or a group of people; what is required is that they have made an extraordinary effort to enhance safety in the offshore sector. 24 Sub sea and industry robots a promising business area Offshore Center Danmark has initialized a development project with the ambition of strengthening the subwater knowledge cluster Robot technology is still in its early stages in the offshore industry, but the demand for cost reduction and new advanced technologies for inaccessible oil fields call for new solutions. Danish robot technology stands in the front row and in co-operation with companies and knowledge institutions, Offshore Center Danmark wants to strengthen this development and knowledge formation by implementation of this development project. In addition to finding technical solutions, the ambition of the project is that it shall create a basis for strengthening the sub-water knowledge cluster, which already is in the field. The development project focuses on development of an AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) based system, where an AUV autonomous underwater robot carries out regular cleaning of fouling of wind turbine foundations and other offshore structures. A power supply docking station shall be developed and designed for the robot. The AUV cleaning robot shall be developed to operate specific offshore oil/ gas constructions and the typical wind turbine foundations in a standard wind turbine farm. Cost savings shall be calculated in relation to the reduced loads, improved conditions of inspection and any life extending impacts by regular cleaning. The technical development project Subsea Installations will strengthen the Danish company competences in the field; states project coordinator Klaus Jørgen Mølleskov, Offshore Center Danmark. to reduction of material consumption. Finally, the cleaning system allows optimal visual inspection of the constructions. A new exchange-of-experiences group The project is called Subsea Installations and kick off was at a conference in February. During the entire course of the development project, there will be focus on construction of an Underwater robot network, an exchange-of-experiences group among the participating companies. The network/exchange-ofexperience group can be the beginning of establishment of a real Underwater robot knowledge centre. This technical development project will strengthen the Danish company competences in the field and not least it will also strengthen the commercial knowledge-and network formation of the offshore companies within underwater robot technology. Offshore oil/gas and offshore wind energy belong to the most leading-edge and transcendent technologies of the world, including also in relation to use of robots above and under water. Underwater robots have undergone the same explosive technical development as industrial robots. Therefore today the underwater robots are used to a great extent within offshore oil/gas and wind energy production during installation, operation and maintenance, says project coordinator Kluas Jørgen Mølleskov, Offshore Center Danmark. Subsea Installions development project is financed with support from the Danish Agency for Science Technology and Innovation and the Syddansk Vækstforum. As a consequence an AUV cleaning robot, which can carry out regular cleaning of marine fouling, will cause minor loads of construction and will thus contribute 24 ON/OFF NEWS - February 2013

26 Offshore Center Danmark counting down for the oil and gas nettwork event OGIB The B2B event OGIB May attracts representatives from all parts of the oil and gas supply chain May representatives from all parts of the offshore oil and gas supply chain will meet in Esbjerg, Denmark, to join his rather unique concept based on short meetings, and as last year OGIB will become an international event with several international companies participating. Oil companies Maersk Oil, Hess and TOTAL have already signed up, and a large delegation from Angola, the fast- growing, African oil nation, has signed up as well. This delegation includes, among others, Sonangol, one of the world s greatest oil companies. Among the group of Denmark-based suppliers will be companies such as FORCE Technology, ABB and Falck Nutec when companies from many countries join the conference tables to have 15-minute meetings and uncover mutual business opportunities It is our experience that companies in the oil and gas industry have been searching for network trying to get new contacts and find new partners and customers. It is the second time Offshore center danmark is hosting OGIB, and the concept has proved to be a successful way to create contacts between businesses, says Morten Holmager, Development Manager, Offshore Center Danmark. It is still possible to register, and all participants get the opportunity to request for a number of businesses that they would like to meet for a 15 minutes long meeting. During this the companies can clarify if there is reason to proceed with cooperation. The companies can manage op to 17 meetings during the day. Managing Director Khalid Al Qubaisi from Al Yaseah Oil & Gas in Abu Dhabi in conversation with director Peter Blach, Offshore Center Danmark during last year s OGIB. 26 ON/OFF NEWS - February 2013

27 This opportunity gives them a unique insight into the possibilities of the oil/gas industry. This event is different to what people in the oil and gas industry are used to. Normally they go to conferences where network happens during the breaks, and it can be difficult to meet the people and businesses they would like to. With OGIB we want to give them the possibility to meet exactly the kind of people they would like, says Morten Holmager. Representatives from 13 oil-producing countries came to Esbjerg when OGIB was on the first time round in May In addition to large, European oil nations such as Norway and the UK, also Brazil, Angola, Greenland and the United Arabic Emirates turned up in Denmark. Offshore Center Danmark had an ambition of attracting 75 participants to the event last year; in the event, 3 times as many players joined OGIB. Feedback from participants in OGIB 2012 was very positive. Out of 67 responses, 88% indicated that their overall impression was either excellent or almost excellent. Participants had 1, minute meetings in a single day before they attended Offshore Center Danmark s networking dinner. A short while after the event, 61% indicated they would take part in OGIB 2013, 37% said they might turn up, and only a single participant gave a negative answer. International input On the day after the OGIB B2B meetings, you are invited to take part in the conference Offshore Oil & Gas International. The first half of this conference focuses on upcoming markets such as Angola, Brazil and Greenland. Representatives from these countries and Danish companies with experience of these markets will share their knowledge. The second part of the conference will be organised in collaboration with UKTI and will focus on opportunities in the UK.

28 Offshore Center Danmark makes every effort to make Danish know-how visible The centre has several media that focus on the offshore sector s many competences One of Offshore Center Danmark s foremost aims is to make visible competences and strengths in the offshore sector. One of the ways in which the centre achieves this is by means of a series of media, and in early February the annual ON/OFF Yearbook was published that takes stock of developments in the sector over the past year and focuses on some of the success stories to be found in the sector. Peter Blach, Offshore Center Danmark s Director, observes: ON/OFF Yearbook is the spearhead in our dialogue with the international offshore sector and contains many positive stories and portrays a growing sector; this applies to both offshore renewables and offshore oil and gas. Apart from the annual status concerning development in the sector, Offshore Center Danmark has in recent years put in a great effort to relate the story of the many job and development opportunities that the offshore sector offers. An insert in the daily newspaper Jyllandsposten in January was targeted at young people, and the chance to win a helicopter ride was used as an opportunity to tell them about job guarantees, good wages and an abundance of challenges. ON/OFF Yearbook, the job and career insert and the centre s other media are obvious channels for advertisers who wish to enter into a dialogue with an attractive sector. From January 1, 2013, the task of attracting advertisements has been assigned to Tabloid Nordic that, on behalf of Offshore Center Danmark, canvasses companies and asks them to make use of the centre s media. Advertising in Offshore Center Danmark s magazines and other publications is now handled by the publisher Tabloid Nordic. The photograph features Tabloid Nordic employees Jakob Jermin and Anja Christensen, presenting one of the centre s many publications. ON/OFF Yearbook is published in English and can be ordered from Offshore Centre Danmark. Newspaper insert on job and career opportunities is in Danish and can also be ordered from Offshore Center Danmark. 29 Networkers will be busy in the spring Large influx to Offshore Center Danmark s regional networking groups As the offshore sector grows, the need for knowledge-sharing and networking initiatives grows as well. This is why Offshore Center Danmark has established regional networking groups to do with both offshore renewables and offshore oil and gas, and interest in becoming involved in the groups is great. The centre has therefore established extra networking groups according to where in Denmark there is a need for this. The networking meetings are intended to work as development fora for companies in the sector where they can establish contacts and discuss current and future challenges. Furthermore, ideas can be developed for initiatives that can make the Danish offshore sector s position even stronger than it is at present, which will reinforce its ability to compete internationally. At networking meetings in Greater Copenhagen and northern Jutland, all 40 seats were taken, and similar interest is expected in the networking events in the spring. Network facilitator Palle Isaksen from Offshore Center Danmark explains: The networking groups are seeing a large influx of people, and I believe it s because companies realise there are many opportunities in the sector. Knowledge-sharing helps develop the offshore sector and enhance Danish companies competences from an international perspective. There s a basis for greater profits and more jobs in the sector. Knowledge-sharing in networking groups also creates a forum for developing partnerships that can form the basis of new clusters, consortiums, joint ventures, collaboration on projects and much more. Everybody is welcome All offshore sector companies are welcome to join the networking groups, where they can sign up for a year at a time. Palle Isaksen says: It s not a requirement to be a member of Offshore Center Danmark, but members are given a 50% discount. Interested companies are welcome to contact network facilitator Palle Isaksen, Offshore Center Danmark, for further information. OWIB takes place in December and is targeted at the international offshore wind turbine sector, and OGIB in May revolves around offshore oil and gas. The most recent networking meetings were fully booked as was the case here at an event in January hosted by DBI, The Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology. ON/OFF NEWS - February

How the B2B event works Prior to OGIB you choose what businesses you wish to meet. Based on the meeting requests, we create personal meeting schedules accommodating as many requests as possible. A few days before the event, you will receive a personal meeting schedule, indicating when, where and with whom your meetings take place. REGISTRATION IS OPEN at Who will participate OGIB is intended for businesses from all levels in the supply chain. Operators, manufactures, engineering companies, businesses within construction, service and maintenance, universities and training institutions etc. Examples of participants at OGIB 2012:

36 stable supply is the short answer Securing a safe supply of energy is a complex question faced by societies around the globe. At Ramboll we work with partners and clients to develop responsible oil and gas solutions that secure heating to our homes and fuel for our cars.

37 Maersk Oil key speaker in Abu Dhabi Head of EOR Capability Centre Son Huu Do, Maersk Oil, is one of the key speakers when 2nd Annual Enhanced Oil Recovery and Heavy Oil Conference is to be held on March in Abu Dhabi. Son Huu Do will be talking about the challenges in implementing EOR in future projects. 2nd Annual Enhanced Oil Recovery and Heavy Oil Conference will explore the various challenges in EOR domain and deliberate on solutions for successful deployment of EOR programmes. The conference will feature speakers from organizations like Qatar Shell Co., Condor Petroleum, Ecopetrol S.A, Breitling Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Corporation, Water Standard, PDVSA E&P and Maersk Oil. Many IOCs and NOCs are trying to build up their capability to develop EOR opportunities such as EOR. However, many don t have a clear strategy for capability development. Even when there is a clear strategy, the industry is facing with severe shortage of people with practical EOR experiences. Many people can carry out a simulation study, but few actually had worked on operational EOR projects. Therefore, building up EOR capability is critical to the success of a company EOR ambition, says Sun Hoo Do. His presentation will focus on key challenge areas and effectively overcoming the obstacles. Son Do has an experience of more than 25 years in EOR covering all key aspects of EOR including reservoir simulation, complex PVT, operational, reservoir management, strategic planning, R&D and management. He is currently the Corporate Head of EOR Capability Centre for Maersk Oil in Copenhagen Denmark. ABB acquires APS Technology Group ABB, a leading power and automation technology group, has agreed to acquire APS Technology Group (APS), a San Diego, California-based company that develops and markets solutions for the port industry. The acquisition will expand ABB s crane system portfolio to the container terminal market. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of Established in 2002, APS employs approximately 50 full-time people in its headquarters in San Diego, California, and its office in Long Beach, California. APS is a leading global supplier of vision based automation solutions that identify containers, trucks, rail equipment, and other transport assets for ports and intermodal container facilities. These systems help container terminals, port authorities and shipping lines to streamline their operations by automating manual processes within gate, vessel, rail and yard operations. This addition will help ABB to expand its crane systems portfolio for the container terminal and adjacent supply chain markets. APS will join ABB s Process Automation division. The acquisition of APS is an important milestone for us to expand our terminal automation offering and provide our customers with added-value integrated solutions, said Heikki Soljama, head of ABB s Marine and Cranes business unit. This acquisition is a good strategic fit for our existing solution portfolio, and will further strengthen our product portfolio. Maersk Oil UK increases acreage after UK 27th Round Licensing Awards Maersk Oil UK has been offered nine of the currently awarded licenses in the UK s 27 Licensing Round, three operated and six non-operated, further strengthening its position in the UK North Sea. The awarded licences will result in exploration drilling of one firm well and one contingent well. The award of these new licenses adds significantly to our long term growth strategy for the UK business, said Martin Rune Pedersen, Maersk Oil UK Managing Director. Our aim is to double our production in the next 5-7 years, and the award is integral to sustaining future growth. The Exploration Team is highly experienced, with an excellent track record of successful bids and the technical expertise to maximise value from the licenses. As a global company, we were able to leverage our recent successes such as in Norway with the Johan Sverdrup discovery, and apply lessons learned to the UK business. Our planned drilling programme and project developments will see an intense period of activity and I am delighted that in a tight rig market we have already secured the Sedco 704 rig on a two-year contract starting early 2013 that will also allow for timely execution of the wells from the 27th Round awards. Some of the licences offered lie around Maersk Oil UK operated discoveries including Culzean, Ockley and Courageous. In addition to the offered acreage, Maersk Oil UK still has as number of outstanding applications pending environmental assessment. Maersk Drilling teams up with BP Maersk Drilling and BP have signed a partnership agreement to develop conceptual engineering designs for a new breed of advanced technology offshore drilling rigs that will be critical to unlocking the next frontier of deepwater oil and gas resources. 36 ON/OFF NEWS - February 2013

38 prevention (BOP) equipment. BP will then determine how best to proceed with construction. BP estimates that application of this technology across its own global portfolio alone could potentially access an additional billion barrels of resources. N Claus V Hemmingsen, CEO at Maersk Drilling BP and Maersk Drilling will collaborate on concepts for deepwater drilling rigs that can operate in high-pressure and high-temperature reservoirs up to 20,000 pounds per square inch and 350 degrees Fahrenheit. The agreement is part of BP s Project 20KTM, a multi-year initiative to develop next-generation systems and tools for deepwater exploration and production that are beyond the reach of today s technology, which has a technical limit of 15,000 psi pressure and temperatures of 250 degrees Fahrenheit. We are proud to enter into this partnership with BP and see it as recognition of Maersk Drilling s technological achievements and competencies. The technology developed will move the boundaries of the offshore drilling industry and will enable access to resources that are inaccessible with today s technology, says Claus V Hemmingsen, CEO at Maersk Drilling. With the construction of two 6 MW wind turbines from Siemens Wind Power, DONG Energy has taken a major step in our efforts to reduce the cost of energy from wind turbines at sea. With the new and almost twice as large wind turbines, we prospectively only need half the number of foundations and half the number of cables between the turbines compared to today. A jointly staffed engineering team will be located in Houston, with back-office support from Maersk Drilling s headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark. The team will perform the engineering studies required to select the optimal design of the 20KTM drilling rigs, riser and blowout ON/OFF NEWS - February

39 OTES & NEWS N Offshore Wind Power to Grow tenfold in the UK The global offshore wind power market, fuelled by the declining cost of wind power generation and impressive investment from the UK, is expected to explode over the next decade, states the consulting company GlobalData. The company s new report forecasts the global offshore wind power market to rocket from a 2012 cumulative installed capacity of 5.1 GW in 2012 to 54.9 GW by the end of the decade. The UK is a major player in the offshore wind power market thanks to its substantial financial commitment and ideal location, contributing more than half of the global installed capacity last year, with 2.7 GW. Jonathan Lane, GlobalData s Head of Consulting for Power and Utilities, says: While risks for offshore developers remain, in particular the potential rationing of Contracts for Difference under the levy control framework, the still nascent transmission regime and the competition from nuclear power, the UK government is firmly supporting offshore wind via the Energy Bill. Offshore wind is expected to make a large impact upon the UK s 2020 renewable energy targets and a major expansion is planned. Correspondingly, GlobalData expects the country s offshore wind power installed capacity to hit 21 GW by the end of 2020, increasing almost 800% from According to the firm s latest report, the offshore wind power industries of several other countries are also expected to undergo massive expansion over the next decade. Germany, in particular, has plans to grow its offshore wind sector substantially in the future, announcing a target of 25 GW installed capacity by 2030 and 95 GW by Danmark i spidsen for skandi- 38 ON/OFF NEWS - February 2013
