4 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Entry (Prerequisites) Overview Assessment Information Level 3 English 13ENG 12 Credits in Level 2 English with at least two External Level 2 Achievement Standards Students study literature and language, including a film, extended text, style analysis, their own research project and an oral presentation. Level 3 English is an essential base for tertiary study in media, management, the arts, commerce, advertising and law. This subject can be endorsed with Achieved with Merit or Excellence. This course is for people for whom English is an additional language. work includes reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary and grammar in English. Particular emphasis is placed on reading and writing, which are major components of mainstream subjects and future tertiary education. English Language has NCEA Unit Standards, which are endorsed as Achieved or Not Achieved. Some New Zealand universities require a Band Score pass in IELTS (as well as the required year 13 entry) as entry, so assistance in preparation for this examination will be offered as needed. TOIEC/TOEFL course materials and tutorials are available to year 12 and 13 students on request. These examinations incur independent fees. 5 Level 3 Media Studies 13MES Entry (Prerequisites) Level 2 Media Studies (or with permission from teacher) Overview This course is ideally suited to students who are interested in the arts, communication, and society. The course looks at the ways in which the media are influential in society, and how students can contribute positively as both consumers and creators of media products. This course works with students strengths in writing, design, research, and uses their existing experiences with the media. It requires them to work independently on filmmaking. Students will learn that in all walks of life, some knowledge of how to deal with the media is essential. This course extends the work started in NCEA Level Two with an emphasis on Calculus. The course will help to gain skills in logical thinking and problem solving. It is highly recommended that Students who are also studying NCEA Level 3 Physics should study Calculus. Overview The Level 3 Chemistry course builds on the knowledge and skills gained in Level 2. The course explores the physical and chemical properties of a range of substances, it develops an understanding of the basic fundamentals of chemistry and how chemistry is used in society to meet needs, resolve issues and develop new technologies. It is a full academic programme and prepares students for entry into a number of tertiary studies including Health sciences, Engineering, and Science. 12 PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Entry (Prerequisites) Overview Level 3 Adventure - 13ADV Level 2 Adventure In Level 3 Adventure Education you will be working towards Level 3 NZQA unit and achievement standard credits. This will count towards a National Certificate in Outdoor Recreation (Leadership) (Level 3) as well as the National Certificate of Achievement in Education (NCEA). This course is designed to give students access and skills in various recreational settings. It will benefit students who wish to go into the adventure tourism industry, the services and those who wish to learn about themselves when faced with a challenge. The work you do throughout the year will be assessed internally (I). L(3) indicate level 3 unit standard or credits. Students will analyse a health issue for a particular group within New Zealand society e.g. teenage pregnancy, analyse an international health issue, investigate a range of health practices in contemporary New Zealand society e.g. western scientific medicine, complementary and alternative medicine and traditional medicine and examine contemporary dilemmas / ethical issues e.g. assisted reproductive technology, elective plastic surgery. 13 Level 3 Physical Education - 13PED Entry (Prerequisites) 12PED-NCEA L2 Achievement Standard credits. HOD Physical Education approval. Overview In Level 3 Physical Education you will be working towards Level 3 credits for the National Certificate of Achievement in Education (NCEA). The focus of this course is on understanding, applying and reflecting on theoretical principles in a practical context. It will include concepts relating to Biomechanics, Motor Skill Learning, Functional Anatomy, Exercise Physiology, Sports Psychology, Social Responsibility and Leadership Strategies. It will also focus on the skills of evaluating, analysing data and performances, and applying critical thought on topical issues and practices. Research skills, Essay and Report writing are essential for success in this course. The work you do throughout the year will be assessed internally (I). Lit indicates that this standard is a specified achievement standard that will meet Literacy (Lit) requirements for NCEA. This course will cover topics such as communicating design ideas, Product and Spatial Design. Students will use Microsoft Office and Computer Aided Draughting (Autocad, Revit, Inventor) for digital design and presentation. This subject will lead to pathways in the areas of Engineering, Graphic Design, Architecture, Landscaping, Manufacturing, Technology, Construction and Infrastructure industries. Digital technologies focus on understanding, developing and using digital software, hardware, and electronic systems across a range of contexts including school, the home, and wider community settings. Students will be able to combine elements from digital media applications and apply relevant codes of practice to communicate effectively. Use planning tools to manage, refine and develop a project that is creative using techniques practised in class. 15 Level 3 Engineering 13 ENI Entry (Perquisites) Students must have completed Level 1 Engineering. In addition their Kamar record must demonstrate consistent safe working practices and an adherence to expected classroom routines. Overview This is a full year's course which covers Engineering Practice (workshop based projects) knowledge of Engineering Materials, Drawing and Design. Overview This programme is designed to complement a variety of career pathways. It is designed to develop entrepreneurial business skills and food science in one programme. Must have unit standard 167. Overview Students will be looking at the development of food products both in the classroom and in the commercial environment while developing advanced practical skills. This course builds a foundation for the Hospitality industry. There is a focus on practical skills and assessment using standards from the furniture industry. The course has no cross-over standards with 13 Product Design, which allows students to do both courses. Students will have the opportunity to design and build 2 Pieces of furniture using woodworking machines and skills. One is a revolving cabinet for organizing all life s electronic devices, while the second is a bedroom storage cabinet with doors and drawers. 17 Level 3 Graphic Novel and Illustration - 13GNI Entry (Prerequisites) It is preferred that students have studied Technology, Graphics and/or Art in Year 10. Overview This is a graphic art and illustration course that is designed to tap into the strong interest shown by students in the field of the art and typography used in the production of the Graphic Novel. They will study Manga and Anime as well as other styles of design. Students will learn how to break down people and objects into simple shapes that can then be developed into a dramatic image. A wide range of techniques and art materials will be explored in the production of these images. Students will also learn to be creative with text and writing and how to incorporate it into carefully designed page layout and art work. 19 Level 3 Product Design 13PRD Entry (Perquisites) Product Design Level 2. Students KAMAR record must demonstrate consistent safe working practices and an adherence to expected classroom routines. Other students may be admitted at the discretion of the HOD. Overview This is a full year course based in Hard Materials Technology. Students will identify a real need or opportunity to design, develop and make a product to meet the needs of an individual client. Students will consult with their clients frequently over the course of their designing and testing phases of their projects. University Design based courses. Level 3 Sculpture - 13SCU Entry (Prerequisites) It is preferred that students have studied Technology, Graphics and/or Art in Year 10. Overview This course explores the process of development that turns a 2 dimensional design into a 3 dimensional one. The course structure follows that of a wide range of industries including the film industry and computer gaming when a new idea or product needs developing. For example students will produce a range of ideas then reduce that to one, explore a range of materials and methods to make it, make a model to work out any problems, then produce it full size. Students will be made aware of a wide range of influences, styles of drawing, sculpting materials and methods. Overview The aim of this course is to provide students with interest in a creative and diverse career with opportunities to study further at Polytechnic and university Students will utilise a range of design processes and consider trends. Students will take an everyday look and infuse it with their own personal style, or start from scratch and design a unique garment using their own pattern block. Students will develop an understanding of construction methods and materials, and will learn ways to document and communicate their designs. Students will be encouraged to develop their ability to combine colours and shapes and line. 22 THE ARTS DEPARTMENT Level 3 Drama 13DRA Entry (Prerequisites) Level 2 Drama, preferable to an achieved level and Level 1 English. Overview This course combines the theory and practical aspects of drama to not only develop performance skills, but also create an understanding of our world. Students will select and use elements, techniques, conventions and technologies associated with drama. Research, evaluation and analysis will also be used to refine ideas within a range of dramatic forms to develop drama. Students will perform and make critical judgements about how elements, techniques, conventions and technologies are used to create form and meaning in their own and others work. Throughout the course, the use of elements, techniques, conventions and technologies of drama will be taught to the students, thus providing an exciting and well-rounded experience. 23 Level 3 Photography 13PHO Entry (Prerequisites) NCEA Level 1 & 2 Visual Art or Photography credits or equivalent portfolio Overview This course will focus on digital processes and Photoshop techniques, and the potential for inclusion of Fine Arts practices such as screen printing, fabric transfers, painting and collage. Students may use the wet darkroom if they show an interest in this area, but it is not required for assessment. The work developed for assessment for both internal and external assessments will be project based investigations around themes. These themes will use a variety of interesting professional Artist Models to help guide us to a successful body of practical work in each unit. Independent research is a key aspect in developing work at Level 3. You will need to have your own digital camera with aperture priority settings, a USB stick of 2GB, and a keen and motivated attitude.
