2 Dawson College P R O G RA M i n fo r m at I O N Liberal Arts is an Honours pre-university program based on the belief in disciplined learning. The curriculum is composed of a sequence of 18 required courses and seminars in Classics, Literature, History, Philosophy, Science and Mathematics, as well as options in other disciplines. The survey of the history and intellectual and creative heritage of our civilization is designed to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and skills appropriate to university studies in most Arts and related faculties. The program emphasizes wide and critical reading, and the effective expression of thought in writing and oral argument. Students admitted to the program show a commitment to hard work and excellence and have graduated from high school with marks well above average. Students take classes together; space is reserved in required Liberal Arts courses in each term. Students will choose five or six Option courses from a variety of disciplines in the sciences, mathematics, social sciences, languages or creative arts to complete their diploma requirements, to pursue personal interests or to complete pre-requisites (if any) of their intended university program. These courses may be taken with students from other programs. A b i l i t i es Students are expected to develop and demonstrate the capacity for critical thought and reflection personal responsibility and ethical discernment cogent, well-formed oral and written expression informed aesthetic responses These four abilities and their components are closely linked and mutually dependent in all Liberal Arts courses. Each of the abilities is explained in detail in the program handbook that is given to all students at the start of their first term.
3 Liberal Arts Courses in the final term draw together the many connected themes of the program. The Integrative Seminar and the Comprehensive Assessment are particularly important in this respect. Between-term reading lists foster continuity and intellectual initiative. T h e C u r r i c u lu m Liberal Arts consists of 29 courses, 18 of which are designated as required, organized in a fixed order. These include the four English and three Humanities courses. Students must also choose two French courses and three Physical Education courses to complete the mandatory General Education portion of their college education, and five or six Option courses from the Liberal Arts concentration areas. u n i v e r s i t y / c a r e e r s Graduates of our Liberal Arts Program have pursued a wide variety of university programs in Canada and abroad, including the following areas of study: Arts and humanities Commerce Communications Journalism Law Management/administration Every student must take four English courses, two French courses, three Humanities courses, three Physical Education courses and two complementary courses to receive a CEGEP Diploma.
