1 Tauranga Boys' College ACCELERATED LEARNING COURSE and OPTION INFORMATION 2015 For specific accelerate planning and advice contact the Accelerate Tutor, Mr. Paul Cook
2 GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR CHOOSING OPTIONS. The Accelerate Programme is one that offers the opportunity to advance a students learning. Students are selected on their entrance test in 8, where the top 3 classes are given an opportunity to access the same curriculum in Term 1. Decisions are then made based on academic results and teacher feedback to ensure no-one is left behind, or is pushed too far. In 10 this programme is 2 classes. These classes are given the opportunity to participate in NCEA Level 1 subjects. The advantages in acceleration include; the opportunity to challenge and extend a student, the competitive advantage of being in a highly motivated academic stream, access to 6 subjects in years 11 and 12, instead of 5 for mainstream students, the opportunity to complete different assessment styles other than NCEA (i.e a Cambridge International Examination subject in 10, University Papers in 13). The ability in 13 to apply to University Halls of Residence with already qualified in NCEA Level 3 at Excellence. With this programme comes increased pressure. Students are required in Mathematics and to study at the same level with 4 periods per week until the end of 12. As an accelerate student completes 10, they need to consider carefully their ability to continue to handle the pressure and to perform at a high level. Accelerate students and their parents should consider these statements when deciding: Take care over making your choice. Discuss it carefully with your teacher and parents. Talk to people who can assist you. Careers staff can help you while subject teachers can also help. Plan two or three years ahead by looking at the course pathways. Do not choose a subject because your friends are taking it - choose subjects based on your requirements. If you wish to pursue particular careers or tertiary qualifications, find out the secondary qualifications that you will need for entry and the subjects that you need to study. Select subjects that you enjoy and in which you expect to succeed. Entry to 12 and 13 and to tertiary courses will depend upon the grades you gain. Be realistic about your abilities. Generally it is not advisable to continue with a subject if you are not achieving sound results at your current level of study.
3 10 All students study 9 subjects, 5 core and 4 optional choices. Subjects may be at 10 or Level 1, provided the entry criteria has been met. NCEA Level 1 subjects; Mathematics Science In 2015 the College will offer a Cambridge International Examination subject for the first time. This is Global Perspectives and replaces NCEA Level 1 History or Geography. 11 All students study 6 subjects with and Mathematics (4 periods per week) as compulsory. No T3 subjects are selected. Subjects may be at Level 2, provided the entry criteria has been met. No more than 3 will be allowed, 2 is more common. 12 Students apply for continued acceleration. Promotion is not automatic. All students study 6 subjects with and Mathematics (4 periods per week) as compulsory. No T3 subjects are selected. Subjects may be at Level 3 provided the entry criteria has been met. No more than 3 will be allowed, 2 is more common. 13 Students apply for continued acceleration. Promotion is not automatic. All students study up to 5 subjects. 13 can select from the T3 options, with a University papers on offer here also. Students have the additional opportunity to study a selection of University papers. Information on these can be found in this booklet. Students need to, in selecting their Level 3 course, be aware of the University Entrance requirements. The ability to write well is important. Students need to be aware that the most popular courses, such as Engineering may require a higher level of achievement than some other Degrees. Students studying Health Sciences at Otago University cannot study any University papers. Their course needs to be individually planned with Mr Hall (Deputy Principal). A meaningful course is available through the Scholarship programme. Students intending to study Medicine at Auckland University MUST take ENX3 in their last year. Selection for Medicine at Auckland is based on several criteria: Students may have the opportunity in 12 to sit Scholarship examinations. Entry is restricted to those achieving at a high level in NCEA Level 3.
4 ACCELERATED LEARNING PROGRAMME * Please note this is a generalized, but common pathway. It is not the only options. Again, individual planning is available. There is significant acceleration in the Arts, and Humanities that is not included here. 10 Science 4ASC (NCEA L1) Mathematics 4AMA (NCEA L1) 4AEN (enriched) 11 Physics PHY2 (NCEA L2) Chemistry CHE2 (NCEA L2) Mathematics 5AMA (NCEA L2) 5AEN (NCEA L1) 12 Physics PHY3 (NCEA L3) Chemistry CHE3 (NCEA L3) Statistics 6AMA (NCEA L3) 6AEN (NCEA L2/3) 13 Physics 7APH (University) Chemistry 7ACH (University) Stats or Calculus 7AMA (University) ENX3 (NZ Schol) A C C E L E R A T E Philosophy T3PH (University)
