1 COURSE INFORMATION Course Number: Speech 1311 SPEECH 1311.BX1 COURSE SYLLABUS Fall, 2015 Course Title: Introduction to Speech Communication Course Description: Introduces basic human communication principles and theories embedded in a variety of contexts including interpersonal, small group, and public speaking. Course Credit Hours: 3 contact hours Lecture: 3 Prerequisite: Meet TSI college-readiness standard for Reading and Writing; or equivalent Student Learning Outcomes: Exhibit understanding of theories and principles pertaining to speech communication. (Critical Thinking) Demonstrate ability to compose and present an oral presentation effectively. (Communication Skills and Personal Responsibility) Effectively apply communication theories in the analysis and evaluation of communication interactions. (Critical Thinking and Communication Skills) Demonstrate effective listening skills as a component of human interaction. (Communication Skills and Personal Responsibility) Describe, apply, and demonstrate interpersonal communication skills. (Critical Thinking and Communication Skills) Synthesize material/ideas generated by group members into an effective group presentation. 4 Minimum Student Skills: Technological skills should include the ability to access a Web site when given an address, use the features of your Web browser, download files, attach files to s, and use word processing software. Computer skills will not be taught in the classroom. You will also need to be able to access the LRC databases or other scholarly databases via the Internet. You may also need Adobe Acrobat to read articles via the Internet. Netiquette Expectations: Students are expected to demonstrate respect for professor and other students either via the web or . Student discussions via Blackboard are to be respectful, supportive, and are not to contain any offensive language or comments. Selfaddressed stamped envelope to receive critiques by mail (Optional) Attendance Policy: Attendance: Students are expected to attend all class meetings, arrive when the class begins and remain until the class is over. If the student is absent from class, it is the student s responsibility to learn about assignments or any class work missed, either from other members of the class or the instructor. The student s participation in this course is essential to the success of the learning experience. If the student has questions about the concepts, projects, labs, or presentations, the student is encouraged to communicate with the instructor during the class, schedule a personal appointment or contact the instructor by phone. The student is also encouraged to communicate with other class members for clarification. It is also the responsibility of the student to keep up with points accrued throughout the semester. Final points will be available at the end of the course. Participation: Class participation, involvement, and discussion are essential to the success of Speech Each student is expected to attend five class sessions for oral / group presentations and group work as well as engage in group discussion. To encourage student success in Speech 1311, students will earn points per each class session. Student absence from class is considered unexcused with the exception of: personal or family illness requiring physician assistance/hospitalization, Collin school-sponsored activity, religious holy day or death of a family member. Documentation must be provided either via or at the next class session with the exception of a religious holy day. If a student is going to miss a class for a religious holy day, student must provide documentation within the first two days of class to be considered for any make-up work. A verbal explanation is appreciated but will not suffice as sufficient documentation for consideration. Please advise instructor prior to absence from class (if possible) and provide appropriate documentation for the absence. If student does not attend class, 20 points will be deducted from participation grade for each day that is missed.

5 Behavior: It is the responsibility of the student to engage in behavior that is respectful and supportive during classroom instruction and interaction. Any behavior that impedes the learning process of other students or the instruction of the class could result in referral to the Dean of students. (See Student Code of Conduct.) NOTE: CELL PHONE USAGE: Respect for the classroom environment is an essential component for student engagement and success. Cell phone usage in class is highly disruptive to the professor and other students. All cell phones must be turned off while class is in session except as approved by professor. Unfortunately, some students choose to ignore this request. Any cell phone usage during class will result in loss of participation points. NOTE: No food or drinks are allowed in the classroom with the exception of water or drink bottles that have a cap/lid to prevent spilling. Method of Evaluation: All presentations and assignments are based on a point system. See point/grading scale below. Students will receive a thorough description of assignments, requirements, and grading during Mandatory Orientation and/or on-site class meetings. Instructions for each assignment are also located on the Assignments Page. Grades for all assignments, including online group discussion, will be posted on My Grades on Blackboard within one week after completion of the assignment. Speech critiques will be returned during the following class session. If student wishes to receive critique before the next class session, student must provide a self-addressed stamped envelope. The grades for the Service Orientation Project Reflective Summaries and Personal Evaluation will be posted within two weeks, and the paper will be returned during final exam on-site meeting due to the length. All papers, including outlines and evaluations, must be typed, and students are encouraged to retain a copy of all assignments, including rough drafts, in the event of lost or missing papers. No handwritten assignments will be accepted. Written and oral assignments are at the beginning of class (within first 15 minutes) and are due on the date noted on Course Schedule and will not be accepted after that date. Students may also submit some assignments via Blackboard prior to the on-site meeting or deliver written assignments in advance to instructor in I206 or to instructor mailbox in B189. NOTE: The Service Orientation Project may not be submitted via Blackboard or due to the length of the paper. It is the responsibility of the student to follow the format of the course as indicated in the course schedule and meet the course requirements. If the student is unclear about an assignment, then student is expected to communicate with the professor via , phone, or by appointment. It is also the student s responsibility to keep up with grade points. Student is responsible for keeping up with the course assignments and due dates. All instructions for assignments are in the Assignments Folders. All due dates for assignments are listed on the course calendar. It is not the responsibility of the professor to inform you about due dates for assignments or tests. All make ups are at the discretion of the professor. Students will be allowed to make up a speech only if time allows and appropriate documentation is provided. However, all speeches delivered after the due date are considered late, and 20 points will

6 automatically be deducted from the point value of the speech. Assignments: The following are the required assignments for the semester. Online Group Discussion Students will participate in 3 online group discussions throughout the semester. Students will have one week to complete the discussions. Students are expected to participate in each discussion and post two comments and two responses for each discussion. Student postings will be graded based on the breadth and depth of the discussion. See instructions and grading criteria for online group discussion and instructions for Posting I, II, and III on the discussion board. Click on discussion to post comments and responses. POINT VALUE: Posting I 10 Points, Posting II 20 Points, Posting III 20 Points. TOTAL POINT VALUE 50 Points Tests - Two multiple choice tests will be administered during the semester. All tests are administered online and contain 50 questions each. Each question is worth 2 points. Students have one week to complete the tests, and the time allowance is 75 minutes. To access the test, click on Assessments on the Blackboard. See study guide for each test on course website. NOTE: ONCE TEST HAS CLOSED, THERE IS NO MAKE-UP OF TEST UNLESS STUDENT CAN PROVIDE DOCUMENTATION THAT STUDENT WAS ILL OR UNABLE TO COMPLETE DUE TO FAMILY EMERGENCY FOR ENTIRE DURATION OF THE TEST. POINT VALUE Points Each = 200 POINTS. Skill Mastery/Concept Comprehension Effective Communication Project (Final Exam) - In a small group, students will develop a group presentation demonstrating knowledge and understanding of constructive communication and conflict reduction. All members of the group are required to participate in the organization, development and presentation of this project. The group is also required to use props/visual aids to enhance the reality of the presentation. Students will be given class time to prepare for this project. However, preparation outside of class will most likely be necessary. Each member of the group will be evaluated on his/her over-all contribution to the organization, development and presentation of this project. The final grade for the project will reflect individual/group performance and contribution. See Effective Communication Project Instructions and grading criteria on the Assignments Page. POINT VALUE 150 Points. NOTE: FINAL EXAM MUST BE PRESENTED ON THE SCHEDULED FINAL EXAM DATE. Service Orientation Project - Student will view the film, Pay It Forward, and engage in a service orientation project based upon the concept of pay it forward. Student will develop a plan of action outlining goals for project and write a paper outlining goals. Student will be expected to engage in communication interactions with a significant person in his/her life and be of service to those people. Student will also write a paper that outlines the services performed, communication concepts and skills that were applicable to the services performed, provide a critical analysis of the outcome of the service, and write a personal evaluation. See Service Orientation Project Instructions, samples, and grading criteria on Assignment Page. Plans of Action 25 Points, Reflective Summaries 100 Points, Personal Evaluation 25 Points. TOTAL POINT VALUE 150 POINTS. Oral Presentations - Each student will be responsible for the development, organization and

7 delivery of two oral presentations. All presentations are due on the assigned date. There are no make-ups of a speech without a doctor s note or documentation to support absence from class. See instructions, sample speeches, and grading criteria for oral presentations on the Assignments page. A speech presentation is not considered viable unless all requirements for speaking are met as noted on instruction handouts. Professor cannot accept outlines, key word outlines, works cited page, or Power Points via or after speech is presented. NOTE: DUE TO OUR TIME CONSTRAINTS, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT EACH STUDENT ARRIVE IN CLASS ON TIME AND BE PREPARED TO PRESENT HIS/HER SPEECH. EACH STUDENT PRESENTATION REQUIRES THAT STUDENT IS PREPARED TO SPEAK AND MUST PRESENT THE FOLLOWING ON DAY OF PRESENTATION: FULLY DEVELOPED OUTLINE KEY WORD OUTLINE IN A FOLDER POWER POINT/WORKS CITED PAGE (FOR RESEARCH SPEECH). Demonstration Speech Student will prepare a 3 5 minute speech demonstrating a hands-on process. Student will be expected to prepare a typed outline, a key word outline, use a visual aid, and deliver the speech extemporaneously. See instructions, outline format, and sample speech in the Assignments Folder. POINT VALUE = 100 POINTS. Informative Speech Students will prepare a 3 5 minute speech with Power Point to support the presentation. Student will also be expected to prepare an outline, key word outline, works cited page and deliver the speech extemporaneously. See instructions in the Assignments Folder. POINT VALUE = 150 POINTS. NOTE: ALL SPEECHES MUST BE DELIVERED IN CLASS AND CANNOT BE VIDEO TAPED NOR PRESENTED VIA WEBCAM. Peer Review Students will engage in a peer review of self and other group members who participate in the Effective Communication Project. Student will review the Teamwork Evaluation Rubric and use the rubric as a guideline to evaluate all members of the group. All surveys must be typed, submitted at beginning of class (within first 15 minutes) on due date, and will not be accepted via . Any survey that is handwritten will not be graded. See the rubric and peer review survey on Blackboard. POINT VALUE 30 POINTS Participation - Students will receive an attendance/participation grade for the semester. This grade is based upon contribution to the class discussions, group projects, respectful class behavior, and class attendance. Students will earn points per class session for class participation and attendance at mandatory orientation. Student must be present at beginning of class and remain until end of class to receive points. (See Attendance Policy) If student misses a class session, 20 points will automatically be deducted from participation grade. POINT VALUE POINTS. Collin Events / Extra Credit - Students are encouraged to attend specific Collin Events during the semester to enrich their learning experience. It is unethical for the professor to add points that have not been earned at the end of the semester to change a final grade.
