Intimate relationships, marriages & families (8th ed.). New York: McGraw-Hill. Course Description This course comprises a moderately comprehensive study of dating, courtship, and marital relationships. Course Requirements 1. Students are expected to attend class as scheduled. If you tend to be student who misses class frequently, this course will not fit your style. Material for the exams will be both from textbook content as well as any discussions, content and notes covered in class. 2. My expectation of you is that of scholar. As such, you should attend class prepared to discuss the assigned reading and participate as if your peers and the learning process are valuable and relevant. In addition to the readings listed in the syllabus, there may be supplemental readings assigned. These will be posted on our Bb course website: Please regularly check Bb for course information. 3. Two tests will be given throughout the semester (see the dates on the schedule). Each exam will be worth 15% of your final grade. Tests will be comprised of various question types: multiple choice, true/false, matching, and fill-in-the-blanks. Legitimate reasons for missing an exam include medical, judicial, or extreme/serious personal events that truly do not allow you to take the exam. If you miss an exam, you will be asked to provide documentation to support the reason for your absence. The makeup exam may be different from the exam given in class and may include different question types (including essay questions). Our Final Exam will be administered: Thursday, December 11, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Make-ups for the final exam will only be given in case of emergency and with prior notice.

2 4. In-Class Assignments: During the semester, 10 short written assignments will be completed during class. These assignments will not be announced in advance and you must be in class to complete them; no make-up opportunities will be available. In-class assignments will be worth 10% of your final grade. 5. Critical Life Reflection: Throughout the course, we will be discussing common expectations and myths about dating, marriage, and family life. To stimulate thinking about our course topics, you will be asked to describe your expectations and current reflection on multiple relevant issues. More information and a grading rubric will be posted on Blackboard. The critical life reflection paper is due on Thursday, Sept. 25 th. The critical life reflection paper is worth 20% of your final grade and no late papers will be accepted. 6. ART (Applied Relationship Theory Exercises): Throughout the semester, a variety of activities outside the classroom will be completed. You may complete as many activities as you prefer; the goal is to accumulate 100 points for all of the activities combined (some will be worth more points than others). These activities will require you to reflect on your interactions and beliefs regarding dating and marriage beliefs. The instructions for each assignment will be posted on Blackboard. These activities are due at multiple dates during the semester. Individual grades from each completed activity will be added together and that total is worth 20% of your final grade. No late papers will be accepted. 7. Group Project: Every student will be assigned to a small group and will examine varying cultural/religious beliefs and customs for dating, courtship, marriage, and family life. As a group, you will present the information by providing videos, pictures, handouts, and other information to the class. More information and a grading rubric will be posted on Blackboard. The group projects will be presented during classes: November 6 th - 20th. The group project will be worth 20% of your final grade. Success in this course on all the aforementioned requirements is your choice! If you choose to be successful, I will be happy to help you. If you do not choose to be successful, I will honor your choice. Every student has the potential to succeed in this class. Course Evaluation In short, final grades will be based on the following: In-Class Assignments 10% Critical Life Reflection 20% Outside Activities 20% Group Project 20% Midterm 15% Final Exam 15% Total 100%

5 Syllabus Addendum The following are important tips/guidelines/requirements that will ensure your success in this class: 1. DO read the syllabus and the assignment guidelines carefully. I do my best to lay everything out for you all in those documents. If you read and follow them carefully, you will successfully complete all the major requirements for the course. Everything you ever needed to know about the class (i.e., course schedule, my office hours, my office location) is provided in the syllabus. 2. If you ever have any questions about anything in the assignment guidelines or other course documents, ASK! I want to help you do well in this class and providing clarification to you all is one way for me to do that. 3. DO check your UNT . I will send class s to your UNT account so you either need to access that account regularly or forward your to another account that you use. You will miss extremely important information if you do not check the s I send. 4. At the end of the semester, do NOT ask me to change your grade. That would be unethical and unfair to every student that has earned his/her given grade. 5. Deadlines are deadlines for a reason. I will NOT accept late papers and your paper will be considered late the first minute after class is scheduled to begin. For example, if begins at 9:30 a.m., that means that if you try to give me your paper at 9:45 a.m., I will NOT accept it. I must have your paper in my hands by the beginning of class when the specific assignment is due. a. For IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS: Your paper is due at the end of class. I will not accept an in-class assignment after our class ends. 6. When I return your papers in class, DO pick them up. I or my T/A will provide feedback on why you received that specific grade. Make sure to look at that feedback before asking me what you did wrong. If I deducted points, I will tell you where and why on the rubric. Use that feedback to make improvements on future papers so that you do not get points counted off again for a similar mistake. 7. When completing a paper, please follow the structure I provide for you in the specific assignment guidelines (if one is provided). This ensures that you are covering the correct material in the correct way. 8. Please manage respectful communication in class. If you are commenting about something we re learning quickly, that s respectful. If you are talking about subject matter outside our scope, that s disrespectful. 9. A cold is not a medical emergency. Other minor illnesses like that are NOT medical emergencies and therefore, you will not be granted an excused absence if you miss class

6 for that reason. If you have a true medical emergency, I need documentation of that in order to provide you with an excused absence. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY IMPORTANT MESSAGES FROM THE UNIVERSITY: Students caught cheating or plagiarizing will receive a "0" for that particular assignment or exam [or specify alternative sanction, such as course failure]. Additionally, the incident will be reported to the Dean of Students, who may impose further penalty. According to the UNT catalog, the term "cheating" includes, but is not limited to: a. use of any unauthorized assistance in taking quizzes, tests, or examinations; b. dependence upon the aid of sources beyond those authorized by the instructor in writing papers, preparing reports, solving problems, or carrying out other assignments; c. the acquisition, without permission, of tests or other academic material belonging to a faculty or staff member of the university; d. dual submission of a paper or project, or resubmission of a paper or project to a different class without express permission from the instructor(s); or e. any other act designed to give a student an unfair advantage. The term "plagiarism" includes, but is not limited to: a. the knowing or negligent use by paraphrase or direct quotation of the published or unpublished work of another person without full and clear acknowledgment; and b. the knowing or negligent unacknowledged use of materials prepared by another person or agency engaged in the selling of term papers or other academic materials. ACCEPTABLE STUDENT BEHAVIOR Student behavior that interferes with an instructor s ability to conduct a class or other students' opportunity to learn is unacceptable and disruptive and will not be tolerated in any instructional forum at UNT. Students engaging in unacceptable behavior will be directed to leave the classroom and the instructor may refer the student to the Dean of Students to consider whether the student's conduct violated the Code of Student Conduct. 7 ADA STATEMENT The University of North Texas makes reasonable academic accommodation for students with disabilities. Students seeking accommodation must first register with the Office of Disability Accommodation (ODA) to verify their eligibility. If a disability is verified, the ODA will provide you with an accommodation letter to be delivered to faculty to begin a private discussion regarding your specific needs in a course. For additional information see the Office of Disability Accommodation website at You may also contact them by phone at (940) COURSE SAFETY STATEMENT (For Laboratory Courses) Students in the Courtship and Marriage course are urged to use proper safety procedures and guidelines. While working in laboratory sessions, students are expected and required to identify and use proper safety guidelines in all activities requiring lifting, climbing, walking on slippery surfaces, using equipment and tools, handling chemical solutions and hot and cold products. Students should be aware that the University of North Texas is not liable for injuries incurred while students are participating in class activities. All students are encouraged to secure adequate insurance coverage in the event of accidental injury. Students who do not have insurance coverage should consider obtaining Student Health Insurance for this insurance program. Brochures for this insurance are available in the UNT Student Health and Wellness Center on campus. Students who are injured during class activities may seek medical attention at the Student Health and Wellness Center at rates that are reduced compared to other medical facilities. If you have an insurance plan other than Student Health Insurance at UNT, please be sure that your plan covers treatment at this facility. If you choose not to go to the UNT Student Health and Wellness Center, you may be transported to an emergency room at a local hospital. You are responsible for expenses incurred there. EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION & PROCEDURES UNT uses a system called Eagle Alert to quickly notify you with critical information in the event of an emergency (i.e., severe weather, campus closing, and health and public safety emergencies like chemical spills, fires, or violence). The system sends voice messages (and text messages upon permission) to the phones of all active faculty staff, and students. Please make certain to update your phone numbers at Some helpful emergency preparedness actions include: 1) know the evacuation routes and severe weather shelter areas in the buildings where your classes are held, 2) determine how you will contact family and friends if phones are temporarily unavailable, and 3) identify where you will go if you need to evacuate the Denton area

RETENTION OF STUDENT RECORDS Student records pertaining to this course are maintained in a secure location by the instructor of record. All records such as exams, answer sheets (with keys), and written papers submitted during the duration of the course are kept for at least one calendar year after course completion. Course work completed via the Blackboard online system, including grading information and comments, is also stored in a safe electronic environment for one year. You have a right to view your individual record; however, information about your records will not be divulged to other individuals without the proper written consent. You are encouraged to review the Public Information Policy and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) laws and the university s policy in accordance with those mandates at the following link: STUDENT EVALUATION OF TEACHING (SETE) Student feedback is important and an essential part of participation in this course.
