1 UCONS Ductless Heat Pump Sacrament Field Demnstratin Draft Metering Prtcl Last update: Overview This demnstratin is designed t evaluate the energy perfrmance, temperature distributin, and ccupant cmfrt f high efficiency, single-head, ductless heat pumps (DHP) installed in fur Sacrament area manufactured hmes. The DHPs will be sized and installed t accmmdate the pen central living/kitchen areas f the hmes. The existing HVAC (central, direct-expansin air cnditining) will be left in place and used n alternating weeks ver the study duratin. This study design, als knwn as a flip-flp study (each system is used n alternating weeks), will allw fr system perfrmance cmparisn ver similar weather patterns fr the study duratin. The ccupant will have cntrl ver bth f the installed systems, but encuraged t nly perate ne system at a time accrding t a predetermined schedule. In the event the DHP will nt satisfy ccupant cmfrt, the existing system can be re-energized and perated. The prpsed metering will capture all system energy use, including when/if bth systems are energized. While nt a statistically significant sample, this demnstratin will help t infrm the energy perfrmance, ccupant cmfrt, and the technical/practical aspects f using a single-head DHP system t displace and/r supplement central air cnditining systems in the manufactured hme setting. The demnstratin is expected t run during the mnths f July, August, and September, Research Questins 1. What fractin f the ttal cling lad will a single-head DHP be able t satisfy ver the cling seasn in fur manufactured hmes in Sacrament, CA? 2. Of the fractin f cling lad displaced, what are the resulting energy savings in cmparisn t the existing central air cnditining system? 3. What are the differences in znal temperature distributins (DHP versus existing AC) acrss the majr living znes (living rm, kitchen/dining, and bedrms) ver the study duratin? 4. In cmparisn t the central AC, hw well des the DHP prvide fr ccupant cmfrt? This research questin will be answered thrugh ccupant surveys.

2 Evaluatin Gals Evaluate the cling system energy use and savings via panel-level, true-pwer metering f the existing central AC system and the DHP, as perated in a flip-flp study prtcl. Using the time-series pwer measurements, evaluate the fractin f cling energy effectively displaced by the DHP. Emplying a series f stand-alne temperature data lggers, recrd and evaluated znal temperature distributin (up t 7 znes/areas per hme) fr each system ver the study duratin. Relative humidity will be recrded and evaluated in the central living HVAC zne. Assess ccupant cmfrt and system satisfactin thrugh deplyment f an ccupant survey at the utset and cmpletin f the demnstratin. Survey instrument will be develped specific t system design, installatin, cntrl, usability, and cmfrt. Appendix A presents a sample survey this will be mdified specific t this study. Mnitring Apprach End-use metering at electrical panel f existing central AC (cmpressr, cndensing fan, air handler, and auxiliaries) and DHP circuit. Whle building/mains electrical metering Recmmend true pwer, rt mean square (RMS), measurements and data recrding fr all electrical metering. Request 30-day (i.e., typical billing cycle) electric utility data. Target 2 years pre-retrfit and duratin f pst-retrfit perid. If available, request any utility interval (i.e. 15 minute) data. All utility data access will require custmer cnsent. Space temperature and relative humidity (RH). Multiple pint temperature and RH lgging f affected znes. 4 Deplyment Prtcl Lgger lgistics. Lggers will be pre-labeled and cme in grups f seven. Each grup will be alltted t ne hme. Lggers 1-6 are temperature lggers and placement will be dictated as described in Table 1 and shwn in Figure 1. Lgger 7 is the relative humidity (RH) lgger and this shuld be installed in the main living space served by the DHP. Lgger installatin guidance is prvided belw in Installatin Ntes. Installatin Ntes All space temperature lggers t be placed n interir space/walls at height between 3 and 5 frm flr. Discunt lcatins where lgger will be influenced by heat/cling surces, e.g., sun light, utside drs/windws, lighting, TVs, AV equipment, kitchen appliances, HVAC ducts, etc. Cnsider lcatins where device des nt have t be physically attached t surface, e.g., shelf, bkcase, tp f thermstat, etc. Where attachment is necessary, cnsider side tabs, wire ties, duble sided tape, magnets (all included). DHP Delivery and Existing System Delivery lggers need t be attached t the respective supply diffuser such that the lgger thermister (black circle n tp) sees the delivered air when system is perating.
