The creative act lasts but a brief moment, a lightning instant of give-and-take, just long enough for you to level the camera and to trap the fleeting prey in your little box. -Henri Cartier-Bresson Welcome to Photography I! In this class you will be introduced to the art of black and white photography, darkroom printing, the history of photography, pinhole photography, photo editing, and digital photography. You will learn to see and appreciate light in a new way and learn how to develop compositional skills. This is not merely a technical class. The main goal is for you to bring away a new sense of seeing. This will be visible in your ability to discover meaning in images and how to create photographs with personal relevance. Rather than merely "taking pictures" your images will convey a message to the viewer. In the future, to build upon the photography skills learned in this class, you will have the opportunity to take Photography II, III, IV, and Advanced Placement. photo above: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare, Paris (1932) Course Objectives: 1. Students will demonstrate verbally, in writing and in visual form an understanding of photography and its major highlights. 2. Students will be able to critique a photograph both verbally and in writing. 3. Students will learn the principals of good composition and how to develop an artist s eye when taking pictures. 4. Students will know the parts of the enlarger and know how to use it.

2 5. Students will know the parts of the SLR (single lens reflex) camera and be able to use it. 6. Students will demonstrate an understanding of film speed and photo paper. 7. Students will know how to develop black and white film. 8. Students will know how to print black and white pictures. 9. Students will know how to mount and prepare photos for display. 10. Students will do experimental techniques in the darkroom. 11. Students will know how to perform basic editing of digital images in Photoshop. 12. Students will begin to explore digital cameras. Required Supplies: 1. $55.00 Photography Fee paid by Thursday October 1, Please make checks payable to Fairfax High School. Darkroom privileges will be revoked if not paid by this date. In accordance with Fairfax County Public School s policy, a lab fee is charged for all photo students. The fee covers all chemicals for developing, continued upkeep of the darkroom, negative sleeves, spray mount, mat board, and supplies needed for experimentation. Students with free and reduced lunch can have this fee waived if a photocopy of their letter stating eligibility is submitted to me by the above due date mm SLR Film camera (Recommended, Not Required) 3. Digital Camera (Recommended, Not Required. Prefer Digital SLR, but most digital cameras will work if they have 10 megapixels or higher) *If you can only afford one camera, I recommend getting a new digital camera with manual camera settings. Canon Rebel T5/T5i, Canon Powershot G16, and Nikon CoolPix S9900 work well Sheets of Photographic Darkroom Paper (See next page for information) 5. 6 rolls of black and white film, do not buy C-41 Film. 3 7. A 3 Ring Binder 2 or more with pockets. 8. Apron or Old T-shirt (Optional) 9. Tripod (Optional) Supply Information Film Purchase 6 rolls of black and white 35mm film. Choose one of the following brands to buy (pick the cheapest film, price may vary) Ilford HP5 400 ISO 24 Exposure Black and White 35mm Film, Kodak T-Max 400 ISO 24 Exposure Black and White 35mm Film, or Kodak T-Max 400 ISO 24 Exposure Black and White 35mm Film. Please see samples below. You will NOT be able to purchase these films from places like Walmart or CVS. Below is a list of recommended businesses. Photocraft price matches and is my top choice. I also sell film at school, but do not have enough to sell each student 6 rolls. Photographic Darkroom Paper For photographic paper you will need to purchase 100 sheets of 8 x10 paper. The cheapest and the best quality paper is Pro Grade Economy Paper. It can only be purchased from Photocraft (see store info below). The second type of paper I recommend is Ilford RC 8x10 Paper. It is more expensive than the Pro Grade Economy Paper. It can also be purchased from any of the venders. Please encourage your child to conserve paper. Eldar or any of his staff can give you individual help with your purchases. I have sent him a list of required supplies. If you would like to buy a new or used camera he can also help you. Photocraft price matches any store or online pricing. For this class students, will use 35mm SLR Film Cameras (see photo example above) and digital cameras (most digital cameras for Photo 1 will due). They may borrow a camera from school, but they may have to wait in line. I encourage you to check with family and friends for a SLR film camera. The technology has not changed over the years. To ensure your camera is working properly Photocraft inspects and fixes cameras. If you plan to buy or use a film or digital camera you already have please have them ready for taking pictures ASAP. Photocraft repairs cameras as needed. If you would like camera suggestions please me. The following need to be purchased prior to the second week of school: photographic darkroom paper and a 2 or larger binder. Purchase all other supplies ASAP. Grading Policies: Assignments and class work will be graded according to the student s ability to understand and master the photographic process and concepts presented. Grades for shoot assignments will include craftsmanship, creativity, and lesson specific requirements. You will be graded on two main categories which include: 1. 90%- Shooting/Printing/Photo Labs assignments include long-term film and digital photo projects, hand coloring prints, and other similar projects %- Journal/Planning assignments include idea development, research, critiquing, classroom warm-ups, and other similar tasks.

5 Late work will be accepted with a 10 point deduction. Partial work will be given an appropriate partial grade. Every quarter there will be cutoff date for any late work. Students may also resubmit any work they can improve upon. The date is approximately one week before the end of each quarter. The cutoff date for late work and resubmissions will be published on Blackboard under announcements and on my classroom board. No exceptions will be made past that date for late work or resubmissions. For an unexcused absence the student has the sole responsibility to obtain from the teacher any quiz, test, or other written assignment. The work must be made up by the next IT class period. Students will only receive 65% of the earned grade. Other classroom activities cannot be made up. Final letter grades will be calculated from grades earned using the school grading scale. A % A % B % B 83-86% B % C % C 73-76% C % D % D 64-66% F 63-0% Midterm and Final Project: Students will not be given a mid-term exam, but will be given a final exam. The final exam will be 1/9 th of your yearend grade. Each quarter will be 2/9 th of your final grade. Cheating: Using writings, images, and negatives not your own is a form of cheating. Having another person take pictures for you and submitting them as your own is also cheating. The first time a student cheats, they will have to make up the assignment for a grade no higher than 50%. All offenses after the first offence will result in a 0% for that assignment. Winter Break Homework Policy: Fairfax High School celebrates the Winter Break as family time that is homework free time. No homework will be assigned over the break. If you assign a long-term project that spans the time of the break, include the following: Students will have a long-term assignment due sometime after the break. The students will have time in class to work on it, and, with careful planning; students will have enough time out

6 of class to prepare for the assignment while keeping the Winter Break homework free. Behavior Expectations and Policies: 1. In this classroom you are expected to show respect to each other, yourself, me, classroom supplies, and facilities. No vulgar language or images permitted. What is appropriate in a college photo class may not be appropriate in a public high school. Images of nudity, alcohol, drugs, or extreme violence are never appropriate. Please check with me before shooting your idea for an assignment if you have any doubts. 2. During studio time you may talk at a reasonable volume if you are working and not being disruptive. However, during class lectures and discussions you may only talk if you are called on. 3. No food or drink is allowed in the classroom, wet room, or the darkroom. 4. The use of cell phones or portable music devices is prohibited during class time. 5. There will be no horseplay, wrestling, or playing in the wet room or the darkroom. We have expensive equipment and harmful chemicals, in those rooms. If I feel that you are endangering yourself, others, or our equipment you will be removed from the class for the rest of the year without refund or course credit. 6. Observe all safety rules. Wear goggles at all times when developing film and handling chemicals. 7. Lateness to class is not acceptable. Any student arriving late to class will be required to have a pass. If you are late by twenty minutes or more you will be marked as an unexcused absence. 8. Restroom usage cannot take place during the first fifteen minutes and the last fifteen minutes of class, unless it is an emergency. 9. Clean up all supplies and put them away properly at the end of every class. This includes personal photo paper, film, projects, and etc. 10. Computers are for photo assignment use ONLY. Checking or going to websites that are not photography related is prohibited. Doing so will result in loss of privileges and parent notification. 11. When critiquing peers work, be attentive and respectful, in addition offer fair and helpful suggestions. 12. Do not waste supplies. They must last all year. Student Artwork Notification:

7 Express consent is given to FCPS and its designees to use student artwork created in or submitted to any FCPS art class. FCPS may copy, publish, and publically display artwork for not-for-profit purposes as deemed appropriate, and crop or otherwise alter copies of the original work for presentation. Where appropriate, credit will be given when student artwork is used. Original artwork will be returned to the student by the end of the academic year but digital copies may be retained indefinitely and used as described above. Separate permission will be obtained in cases that involve keeping the actual work beyond the end of the school year, entering the work in contests, and other special circumstances. Written notice must be provided if consent is not given as described here.

Contract for the Use of School Photography Equipment *In order to sign-out equipment, this form must be entirely filled out and submitted to Mrs. Abraham PRIOR to receiving equipment. All equipment you sign-out must be returned. Equipment includes cameras, camera bags, lenses, battery chargers, memory cards, flashes, tripods, lighting equipment, light meters, and any items you borrow from photography class. I understand that I am fully responsible for the proper care of the photography equipment I borrow. I will return the equipment on time and in the same condition as when signed-out. I understand I must bring it back within 3 days, unless otherwise given approval from Mrs. Abraham prior to sign-out. If I do not bring the equipment back on the assigned day I will forfeit the privilege to borrow any equipment. If I do not have class on the day it is due back I am still required to return the equipment on that date. I understand that I must repair or replace any photography equipment if it is damaged or lost during the time it is in my possession. In order to return equipment, I must personally HAND the borrowed equipment to Mrs. Abraham. If I do not and it is lost/stolen I will be required to replace the item. Replacement costs will be assessed based on the equipment you borrow. Repair costs will also vary. You ve got to start looking for pictures nobody else could take. You ve got to take the tools you have and probe deeper. William Albert Allard Welcome to Photography II! In this class you will be reintroduced to the art of black and white photography, darkroom printing, and digital photography. In addition, you will be introduced to alternative processes, contemporary photographers, and advanced Photoshop techniques. The skills you learned in Photography I will be expanded to create advanced projects working in a series of images. The most important thing you can bring away from this course is a deeper sense of seeing. This will be visible in your ability to discover meaning in images during critique and how to create photographs with personal meaning by incorporating an artist statement. Students will learn how to use the digital SLR camera. 8. Students will learn how to edit and prepare digital images for printing in Adobe Photoshop. 9. You may listen to music on your headphones while working independently in the main classroom. NO electronic devices in the darkroom for any reason. Students are not permitted to use cell phones for anything other than a timer, listening to music, or school research. Any improper use will result in confiscation. Students who are caught more than 1 time will lose the right to use electronic devices for the remainder of the year. There is nothing worse than a brilliant image of a fuzzy concept. -Ansel Adams Welcome to Photography III! The assignments this year will be open ended, which are designed to allow for more selfdirected projects, which will include artist statements. After you have learned more digital photography and Photoshop skills, you will have the choice of completing projects either traditionally with film or digitally. Students will learn more about how to use the digital SLR camera. 7. Students will learn advanced techniques for editing and preparing digital images for printing in Adobe Photoshop.

If you would like to buy a new or used camera he can also help you. Photocraft price matches any store or online pricing. For this class students will use 35mm SLR Film Cameras (see photo example above) and digital cameras (most digital cameras for Photo 1 will due). They may borrow a camera from school, but they may have to wait in line. I encourage you to check with family and friends for a SLR film camera. The technology has not changed over the years. To ensure your camera is working properly Photocraft inspects and fixes cameras. If you plan to buy or use a film or digital camera you already have please have them ready for taking pictures ASAP. The following need to be purchased prior to the second week of school: photographic darkroom paper, flash drive 16G or higher, and a 2 or larger binder.

23 Grading Policies: Assignments and class work will be graded according to the student s ability to understand and master the photographic process and concepts presented. The grade will include artistic merit (originality, creativity, craftsmanship, and use of elements/principals of design) You will be graded on two main categories which include: 1. 90%- Shooting/Printing/Photo Labs assignments include long-term film and digital photo projects, hand coloring prints, and other similar projects %- Journal/Planning assignments include idea development, research, critiquing, classroom warm-ups, and other similar tasks. Late work will be accepted with a 10 point deduction. Partial work will be given an appropriate partial grade. Every quarter there will be cutoff date for any late work. Students may also resubmit any work they can improve upon. The date is approximately one week before the end of each quarter. The cutoff date for late work and resubmissions will be published on Blackboard under announcements and on my classroom board. No exceptions will be made past that date for late work or resubmissions. For an unexcused absence the student has the sole responsibility to obtain from the teacher any quiz, test, or other written assignment. The work must be made up by the next nonpride time class period. Students will only receive 65% of the earned grade. Other classroom activities cannot be made up. Work that was due on the day of the unexcused absence is subject 10 points off per day it is late. Final letter grades will be calculated from grades earned using the school grading scale. A % A % B % B 83-86% B % C % C 73-76% C % D % D 64-66% F 63-0% Midterm and Final Project: Students will not be given a mid-term exam, but will be given a final exam. The final exam will be 1/9 th of your yearend grade. Each quarter will be 2/9 th of your final grade.

24 Winter Break Homework Policy: Fairfax High School celebrates the Winter Break as family time that is homework free time. No homework will be assigned over the break. If you assign a long-term project that spans the time of the break, include the following: Students will have a long-term assignment due sometime after the break. The students will have time in class to work on it, and, with careful planning; students will have enough time out of class to prepare for the assignment while keeping the Winter Break homework free. Cheating: Using writings, images, and negatives not your own is a form of cheating. Having another person take pictures for you and submitting them as your own is also cheating. The first time a student cheats, they will have to make up the assignment for a grade no higher than 50%. All offenses after the first offence will result in a 0% for that assignment. Behavior Expectations and Policies: 1. In this classroom you are expected to show respect to each other, yourself, me, classroom supplies, and facilities. No vulgar language or images permitted. What is appropriate in a college photo class may not be appropriate in a public high school. Images of nudity, alcohol, drugs, or extreme violence are never appropriate. Please check with me before shooting your idea for an assignment if you have any doubts. 2. During studio time you may talk at a reasonable volume if you are working and not being disruptive. However, during class lectures and discussions you may only talk if you are called on. 3. No food or drink is allowed in the classroom, wet room, or the darkroom. 4. The use of cell phones or portable music devices is prohibited during classroom critique, lecture, or any time Mrs. Abraham revokes the privilege. You may listen to music on your headphones while working independently in the main classroom. NO electronic devices in the darkroom for any reason. Students are not permitted to use cell phones for anything other than a timer, listening to music, or school research. Any improper use will result in confiscation. Students who are caught more than 1 time will lose the right to use electronic devices for the remainder of the year. Improper use of laptops or other electronic devices will also result in the loss of the privilege to use them. 5. There will be no horseplay, wrestling, or playing in the wet room or the darkroom. We have expensive equipment and harmful chemicals, in those rooms. If I feel

25 that you are endangering yourself, others, or our equipment you will be removed from the class for the rest of the year without refund or course credit. 6. Lateness to class is not acceptable. Any student arriving late to class will be required to have a pass. If you are late by twenty minutes or more you will be marked as an unexcused absence. 7. Restroom usage cannot take place during the first fifteen minutes and the last fifteen minutes of class, unless it is an emergency. 8. Clean up all supplies and put them away properly at the end of every class. This includes personal photo paper, film, projects, and etc. 9. Computers are for photo assignment use ONLY. Checking or going to websites that are not photography related is prohibited. Doing so will result in loss of privileges and parent notification. 10. When critiquing peers work, be attentive and respectful, in addition offer fair and helpful suggestions. 11. Do not waste supplies. They must last all year. Student Artwork Usage Notification: Express consent is given to FCPS and its designees to use student artwork created in or submitted to any FCPS art class. FCPS may copy, publish, use as teacher examples and publically display artwork for not-for-profit purposes as deemed appropriate, and crop or otherwise alter copies of the original work for presentation. Where appropriate, credit will be given when student artwork is used. Original artwork will be returned to the student by the end of the academic year but digital copies may be retained indefinitely and used as above. Separate permission will be obtained in cases that involve keeping the actual work beyond the end of the school year, entering the work in contests, and other special circumstances. Written notice must be provided if consent is not given as described here.

Contract for the Use of School Photography Equipment *In order to sign-out equipment, this form must be entirely filled out and submitted to Mrs. Abraham PRIOR to receiving equipment. All equipment you sign-out must be returned. Equipment includes cameras, camera bags, lenses, battery chargers, memory cards, flashes, tripods, lighting equipment, light meters, and any items you borrow from photography class. I understand that I am fully responsible for the proper care of the photography equipment I borrow. I will return the equipment on time and in the same condition as when signed-out. I understand I must bring it back within 3 days, unless otherwise given approval from Mrs. Abraham prior to sign-out. If I do not bring the equipment back on the assigned day I will forfeit the privilege to borrow any equipment. If I do not have class on the day it is due back I am still required to return the equipment on that date. I understand that I must repair or replace any photography equipment if it is damaged or lost during the time it is in my possession. In order to return equipment, I must personally HAND the borrowed equipment to Mrs. Abraham. If I do not and it is lost/stolen I will be required to replace the item. Replacement costs will be assessed based on the equipment you borrow. Repair costs will also vary.
