Study and creative manipulation of alternate methods in lighting, camera use, papers, films, developing, enlarging and presentation, all with focus on personal imagery and content. Extensive darkroom work and regular oral critiques London. Upton. Stone. Photography, current ed. Prentice Hall [ISBN ] 35mm or larger format camera with adjustable focus and exposure, along with a 50mm lens or a standard zoom lens. Photographic film/paper. (IX.A) Prerequisite: ART 2410 or permission I. Competencies C1. Achieve a core to intermediate skill competency with the tools and technology of each media studied. C2. Achieve a core to intermediate ability to translate: self-expression, observations or experiences from the world into a visual form. C3. Demonstrate the ability to apply intermediate professionalism in the finish and presentation of original artworks. C4. Demonstrate a critical aware of visual interrelationships and their influence upon the total effect of a work of art. C5. Frame a comparative context, including isolating and analyzing various visual components of art, to critically assess success and failure within a range of visual art forms.

2 C6. Demonstrate an awareness of historical, global, and/or contemporary trends in the field of visual studies. II. Instructional Activities Activities may include but are not limited to the following: IA1. Conduct periodic group and individual critiques to gauge student comprehension of content materials presented in class. (C1, C2) IA2. Facilitate classroom discussions related to the photographic artist or technique representative of the concept or project assigned. (C3, C4, C5, C6) IA3. Assign photographic fieldwork that requires the students first-hand experience with the camera as a creative tool. (C1, C2, C4, C6) IA4. Assign photographic lab work that requires a sustained effort to produce black and white prints. (C1, C3, C6) IA5. Conduct periodic chapter/topic quizzes to gauge student comprehension of textbook reading assignments. (C1, C4, C5) III. Student Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course a student should be able to do the following: SO1. Establish a degree of sophistication with new techniques in photographing. (IA3, IA5) SO2. Fine tune skills in developing black and white film by hand as well as printing proof sheets from negatives and discussing these with the instructor. (IA1, IA4) SO3. Demonstrate by their work a higher degree of understanding in developing a personal approach to photography as an art form. (IA1, IA2, IA3, IA4) SO4. Extend a knowledge of general photographic artists and styles throughout the history of photography up to contemporary times. (IA1, IA2) SO5. Produce a finished, cohesive body of work that shows knowledge and techniques from content materials presented in class. (IA1, IA2, IA3, IA4) SO6. Incorporate new tools and techniques into their camera and darkroom skill set. IV. Topics

3 The course schedule is only an estimate of where the class will be on any given day. Some situations (longer than expected lectures, unforeseen class cancellations, etc.) may necessitate a revision of the schedule. If a student was absent for any changes that may have been made, the student is still responsible for the material. Week 1 Unit 2 Unit 3 Unit 4 Unit 5 Unit 6 Introduction to course, materials & supplies you will need. Let s see where we are a quiz over basic concepts. Introduce yourself via older photographs and process any film already exposed. Interiors: 2 rolls Describing contained space. Understanding problematic exposure situations, low light, back lighting, balancing indoor and outdoor light. Tripod selection and use. Fiber based papers and different developers. Proper chemical handling and introduction to different types of enlargers ideas about toning. Flash: 3-4 rolls. Use and limitations, types of flash and various methods of use such as bounce and fill. How does flash affect the image. Looking at examples. Chapter 13. Technical looking at format options, 120 and beyond. Processing and printing. Sheet film and roll film. How do you print them? Changing enlarging lenses and easel dimensions Into the night: 2-3 rolls. Night life and light, exposure and development, reciprocity problems and effects. Detail in the shadows.tripod and flash and handheld with faster film. Looking at photographs. Robert Adams, Brassai, Henry Wessel and others. Chapter 4. Unit 7 Looking at original prints. Field trips, Hunter Museum, The High, visiting artists and private collections. Size contact versus enlarging paper surfaces and tone. Week 8 Unit 9 Unit 10 Unit 11 Individual midterm review and evaluation we ll look at everything (negatives, contact prints, enlargements) and see where we stand Are we on schedule? Problems/Supplies Current standing in the course and what we may need to do. Lab work while not seeing instructor. Open assignment: 4+ rolls. Choosing a subject of your own. Advice from your instructor and or advice from classmates. Chapter 14. Lab time, The fine print, unique printing style. Final critique. edited selection of semesters work. Work from various projects and the open assignment.

4 V. Assessment The evaluation process in the arts is anything but straightforward. Grading will be based on a combination of different factors, which include the quality of the work produced, the amount of effort expended, the amount of work done, the amount of progress made, the extent of class participation in discussions, attendance, etc Assigned projects will be given based upon materials presented in class. Your response to these projects will be critiqued in class and, along with the final portfolio, will in large part determine your grade. This course is an extension of the tools, techniques and concepts gained by successful completion of ART-2410 or by demonstration of fundamental knowledge of camera and darkroom skills. It is the goal of this class to build upon those fundamental skills to encourage students to broaden their technical and aesthetic knowledge towards a more personal understanding of photography as art. It is assumed that response to the assignments and darkroom will show a higher level of energy and inventiveness that an advanced course entails. Critiques (including the final) 65% of final grade. Critique dates will be given prior to the critiques. Late work will be accepted only with prior approval and will be deducted 1 letter grade for each class day late. Failure to have work ready or missing a critique will result in an F for that critique. Parameters affecting critique grades include quality, focus, exposure, development, neatness, lack of dust and scratches, amount of work, such as the number of exposures, prints made, and the time spent photographing and printing, thematic concerns, originality and presentation. These standards are at the discretion of your professor and will be discussed in class. (SO1, SO2, SO3, SO4, SO5) Quizzes, participation, and outside work 35% of final grade. Unannounced quizzes over assigned reading material, assigned research on artists, willingness to participate in group critiques and classroom discussions. Additional work as assigned. (SO3, SO4, SO5) Attendance This is a studio; therefore attendance at every class is mandatory and will be checked. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor in the event of absence. As a gesture of courtesy to the other class members, timeliness is demanded. If you arrive late to class, you will be marked absent unless you speak with the instructor. Three unexcused absences results in an F for the final grade. Extra Credit Extra credit will be given for attending any art/photography exhibitions. There are usually opportunities in our regional galleries and museums. You are asked to provide a one-page, typed synopsis of the show with an objective description finishing with your subject analysis and interpretation.

Course Delivery Format Standard Format This format is the traditional format and may use an online format to provide access to static materials which include the syllabus, course material, contact information, and presentations. Faculty must make available when requested a copy of syllabus and any other instructor provided course materials, including their contact information. Faculty may require online activities and assignments to include online tests and submission of all written and online communications. The extent of online activities/assignments may vary by course but will be specified on the syllabus. VIII. College Policies This class is governed by the policies and procedures stated in the current Chattanooga State Student Handbook. Additional or more specific guidelines may apply. ADA Statement Students who have educational, psychological, and/or physical disabilities may be eligible for accommodations that provide equal access to educational programs and activities at Chattanooga State. These students should notify the instructor immediately, and should contact Disabilities Support Services within the first two weeks of the semester in order to discuss individual needs. The student must provide documentation of the disability so that reasonable accommodations can be requested in a timely manner. All students are expected to fulfill essential course requirements in order to receive a passing grade in a class, with or without reasonable accommodations. Disruptive Students The term classroom disruption means student behavior that a reasonable person would view as substantially or repeatedly interfering with the activities of a class. A student who persists in disrupting a class will be directed by the faculty member to leave the classroom for the remainder of the class period. The student will be told the reason(s) for such action and given an opportunity to discuss the matter with the faculty member as soon as practical. The faculty member will promptly consult with the division dean and the college judicial officer. If a disruption is serious, and other reasonable measures have failed, the

6 class may be adjourned, and the campus police summoned. Unauthorized use of any electronic device constitutes a disturbance. Also, if a student is concerned about the conduct of another student, he or she should please see the teacher, department head, or division dean. Affirmative Action Students who feel that he or she has not received equal access to educational programming should contact the college affirmative action officer. Academic Integrity/Academic Honesty In their academic activities, students are expected to maintain high standards of honesty and integrity. Academic dishonesty is prohibited. Such conduct includes, but is not limited to, an attempt by one or more students to use unauthorized information in the taking of an exam, to submit as one's own work, themes, reports, drawings, laboratory notes, computer programs, or other products prepared by another person, or to knowingly assist another student in obtaining or using unauthorized materials. Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. Students guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the class. In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions, which may be imposed through the regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an "F" or zero for an activity or to assign an "F" for the course. The instructor reserves the right to modify this syllabus in writing during the course of the semester. The official method for all Chattanooga State Communications to students is via Chattanooga State . IX. Instructor Policies A. Required Supplies: Unfortunately, photography is among the most expensive arts to pursue. Darkroom equipment and chemistry is provided, but you will need to supply the following: During this course you are encouraged to explore various technical problems such as alternative formats, films and papers that may be unfamiliar to you. The following is a starting point. Camera An adjustable 35mm (or larger) format camera, where focus and exposure can be set, along with a 50mm (or wider) lens. Film rolls of 36 exposure black and white film (Kodak T-Max or Tri-X; Ilford HP5 or Delta Pro 400 or equivalent.) Film is also available in 100 rolls that you load yourself. Whatever you have had best success with. You may also want to explore different speeds and types, faster or slower.

7 Paper 100 sheets of 8x10 polycontrast/resin coated paper. (Ilford Multigrade IV Pearl or equivalent.) Use this for proofs. You should also consider at the VERY least 50 sheets of 11x14 fiber. Negative preservers 20 sheets of Printfile style 35-7B (consider a binder/box for safe storage/accessibility.) Other items such as Dust-Off, spray cleanser, apron, towel, cardboard, and scissors may prove priceless. You will also need Lens shade, cable release, tripod, flash, supplementary lens. Matting or mounting board and other presentation supplies for your final portfolio will be needed and will be discussed when appropriate. Every consideration is made to keep cost down but students should budget at least $20 to $30 for certain materials. C. Darkroom access and use will be carefully covered and discussed in class. It is available on a first come-first served basis. There is no additional lab fee for it use, therefore it is a privilege, and remember to always CLEAN UP please report any and all problems/questions to the instructor.
