Page 1 of 6 Transferring Your Internet Services Below you will find the instructions necessary to move your web hosting, , and DNS services to NuVox. The Basics Transferring your domain name Preparing your web hosting Preparing your Directing traffic to NuVox servers Configuring clients THE BASICS Domain, Registrant, Registrar When a person or company purchases a domain name (yourname.com), they have to register it, so that no other party may use it. This person is referred to as the Registrant. The company that processes the registration for the Registrant is referred to as the Registrar. The domain name can be used as the name of your web site and/or the last part of your address (@yourname.com). Why get a Domain? Other than a virtual address for your business Web page, it s a permanent place for your address. This allows you to move your mail hosting from ISP to ISP and not change your mail address. IP Address A unique number, formatted like " ", that specifies a device connected to the Internet. The device could be a computer on your desk or a server that houses your website or , to name just two. Internet traffic travels between addresses like this. DNS (Domain Name Service) The Internet uses IP addresses (" "), not names ("nuvox.com"), to identify users, so there is a need to translate IP addresses into names we can remember. DNS does this for us. Mail Alias An "alias" is a nickname that you can use instead of the address NuVox assigns. For example, we might assign the mail address yourc001@nuvox.net to your domain. Since you wouldn t want to give out this address to your clients, you can create an alias that makes more sense like sales@yourcompany.com. Sales@yourcompany.com is an alias of yourc001@nuvox.net and is what will be setup in your client to check mail.

Page 2 of 6 Zone File A Zone File typically contains information that defines mappings between domain names and IP addresses, and can also contain reverse mappings which can resolve IP addresses into domain names. For example, by using a Zone File we can direct traffic for a domain to different IP addresses. TRANSFERRING YOUR DOMAIN NAME The transfer process doesn t change the ownership of the domain. When you do business with NuVox, even if we register your domain & pay for it, you are still the owner. This isn t true with all companies. NuVox provides free domain name registration and/or renewals for all NuVox web hosting customers. This is an optional service that we provide through our partner registrar Network Solutions. If domain registration transfer is requested and your current domain registrar is not Network Solutions you need to contact your current registrar and obtain an Authorization Code (EPP Key) and provide it to us via at hostmaster@nuvox.net. Shortly after your order is entered into our system, unless you have requested otherwise, the administrative contact for your domain name will receive two transfer requests from NuVox. Approving these requests will transfer the registration of your domain name from your current registrar to a wholesale account we hold with Network Solutions. The current registrant will remain the registrant after the transfer. To determine what address will receive these two transfer requests, you may use the "Whois Domain Query utility. If you do not wish to transfer your domain, reject the transfer request and no further attempts will be made to transfer the domain. If this is the case, then you will be responsible for all renewal fees, and you will be responsible for changing your name servers following the preparation of your services with NuVox. If the address associated with your administrative contact is incorrect, contact your registrar to have them change the address. If your domain is locked, please have your registrar remove the lock. Then, contact the NuVox Hostmaster at to have the transfer requests resent. Transfer requests will be attempted for a maximum of 60 days. If your domain has not transferred within 60 days, no more attempts will be made to transfer your domain name unless you contact customer service to make this request. After the domain name is transferred, we will point all Web & traffic back to your current provider. THIS WILL ENSURE YOUR OLD SITE & IS STILL ACTIVE while you configure your new web site & on our servers. When you are ready, we will remove the pointers (zone file) we set up and your Web & hosting will point to us. If there are any additional DNS records that need to be created, feel free to them to hostmaster@nuvox.net at the time you receive a transfer request. No changes will be made to your service until you contact customer service to move your Web hosting and/or from your current provider to NuVox.

Page 3 of 6 PREPARING YOUR WEBHOSTING It is not our intent to teach hosting, but here some tips to get you started. Before using NuVox Web hosting, you will need to upload your website to the NuVox web servers. You may upload your website using either an FTP client or Microsoft FrontPage. To use an FTP client to connect to our Web servers, connect to your temporary FTP address with the username and password you are given. Your temporary FTP address will be in the following format: example.com.temp.nuvox.net, where example.com is your domain name. Your main web page should be titled index. If you are using Unix Web hosting, then your files should be placed in the HTML directory. If you are using NT Web hosting, then your files should be placed in the directory named for your domain. If you have difficulty uploading your files, you may need to turn passive mode on, or you may need to turn it off. Some firewalls block FTP traffic; you may need to contact your network administrator to determine if FTP traffic is blocked on your network. Please note that ASP is only supported on our NT servers. To use FrontPage, connect to your temporary URL with the username and password listed above. Your temporary address to which you should upload your website will be where example.com is your domain name. Your main web page should be titled index. If you have difficulty uploading your files, you may need to contact customer service to have FrontPage extensions installed on your Web space. FrontPage extensions are not enabled by default. If you have purchased MySQL, you will receive a separate set of extensive instructions from NuVox. Once your website has been uploaded to the NuVox web servers, visit your temporary URL in your browser to determine that it is functional. Your temporary URL will be where example.com is your domain name. Once your site is functional, you are ready to have web hosting with NuVox. Remember, until this step is done, your site will be active to the outside world on your old providers server. Web Logs / Statistics After you begin using NuVox Unix web hosting, you may view your website statistics by going to For example.com this would be You will be prompted for your administrative username and password before you may view your statistics. For NT hosting, please contact technical support if you wish to have logging enabled. We do not offer statistics for NT hosting at this time; however, you may install your own statistics package using our logs.

Page 4 of 6 PREPARING YOUR Before using NuVox , you will need to setup your mail addresses. These addresses are called "alias mail addresses" and have to be setup by you before your addresses will work on our servers. Log In to the Control Panel. You will need your Admin ID and password to continue. If you are the Administrator for your domain and you don t have the Admin ID and password, please contact our data support group at In order to use the Control Panel to configure your addresses, your browser must allow cookies. Step 1: Configure your "Catch all" address. This will tell us what you want to do with incoming mail sent to your domain that doesn't have a valid address. For example, if some one sends an to " jfrost@yourcompany.com" and you don t have a jfrost mail address setup, this is where you tell our system what to do with that message. You have two choices, the first being entering the address to send the mail to, and the second is to select "Return to Sender". Manage E mail for yourdomin.com As an administrator, you are authorized to manage for your entire NuVox account. Use the following tools to access and manage individual mailboxes ( accounts) associated with your domain. Catch All Settings The table below enables you to specify a catch all address. When this feature is activated, all mail sent to an unknown prefix in your domain will be forwarded to this address. If you would rather return unknown mail to its sender, please make sure you have selected "Return to Sender." Step 2: Create your "alias" addresses. By clicking on the icon, you will go to a pop up for entering the address. Once you enter an alias, the screen will re paint so you can verify the new address you just entered in the "Address" column. This alias will become the address you will setup in you client like Outlook. See "The Basics" for a definition of an alias address. Manage Your Account's Individual Mailboxes Below is a list of the individual mailboxes included with your account. The addresses may help you associate employees with a particular mailbox. Click on the appropriate image to change the password, view mailbox capacity, manage addresses, or forward mail for any of these mailboxes.

Page 5 of 6 Options Mailbox Address Password Capacity Addresses Forwarding Vacation Message Rules Mailbox 1 None Specified Mailbox 2 None Specified From here, you can also change the password for each mailbox, forward mail, and set vacation messages for addresses at your domain. Be certain that all addresses are configured prior to using the NuVox service, or mail sent to addresses not created on the NuVox servers will bounce back to the sender or to the catch all address. DIRECTING TRAFFIC TO NUVOX SERVERS Once your website and addresses have been configured on the NuVox servers, it is safe to direct Web and traffic to the NuVox servers. If you are using NuVox for DNS and have transferred your domain name to NuVox, please contact customer service at any time following activation of your voice and/or data products with NuVox to have your zone file changed to direct traffic to the NuVox Web and mail servers. If you are using NuVox for DNS and have not transferred your domain name to NuVox, please contact our customer service at any time following activation of your voice and/or data products with NuVox to have a zone file created for you to direct traffic to the NuVox Web and mail servers. Once the zone file has been created, you may contact your current registrar to change your name servers to the following: extns1.nuvox.net extns2.nuvox.net If you are providing your own DNS, or if you are using a 3rd party, you will need to contact your DNS administrator and provide them with the NuVox MX Records and the IP address of our Web servers. IPs for Unix Web Hosting: , IP for NT Web Hosting: MX Records smtp in1.nuvox.net smtp in2.nuvox.net

Page 6 of 6 smtp in3.nuvox.net smtp in4.nuvox.net smtp in5.nuvox.net smtp in6.nuvox.net After you begin using NuVox Unix WebHosting, you may view your website statistics by going to For example.com this would be You will be prompted for your administrative username and password before you may view your statistics. For NT hosting, please contact technical support if you wish to have logging enabled. We do not offer statistics for NT hosting at this time; however, you may install your own statistics package using our logs. CONFIGURING CLIENTS When your zone file has been changed to direct traffic to the NuVox mail servers, there will be a transition period after the DNS change during which some of your will still be delivered to your former provider's mail server. This transition period is controlled in DNS by a parameter called "TTL", time to live. You may ask your DNS provider what the TTL value is for your domain's MX records. After the transition period, check your mail normally for your old provider to retrieve the last messages delivered to them. Then, you may change the settings on your clients to check the NuVox mail servers for rather than your old provider using the following settings: Incoming mail server: pop.nuvox.net Outgoing mail server: smtp.nuvox.net (use only if connected to the internet through NuVox) Username: full address (ex. example@example.com) Password: Remember your password is case sensitive! To check your using a browser, open a browser and go to Login with your full address and password (ex. example@example.com) If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us anytime at productbusters@nuvox.com. Thank you for continuing to be a valued NuVox customer!
