12 COURSE FACULTY Professor Mitchel S. Berger is Chairman of the University of California, San Francisco s (UCSF) Department of Neurological Surgery and the Kathleen M. Plant Distinguished Professor. He also is the director of the Brain Tumor Research Center at UCSF. Dr Berger s research, articles and books have changed the practice of neurosurgical oncology worldwide. Professor Linda Liau is Director of the UCLA Brain Tumor Program. Her expertise is in intra-operative functional brain mapping. Her research is focused on the molecular biology of brain tumors, gene therapy, immunotherapy, and brain cancer vaccines. Dr. Liau is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Neuro-Oncology. Professor Garth Cruickshank is Professor of Neurosurgery in the School of Cancer Sciences, Birmingham, UK. His research is in immunomudulation and translational techniques. He has worked with the NCRI and European Association for Neuro-oncology to develop numerous trials for brain tumour patients. Professor Roger Stupp is Chairman of the Department of Oncology and Cancer Center, University of Zürich. He has been the lead investigator for establishing the use of temozolomide in glioblastomas and determining the predictive value of MGMT gene-promoter methylation. Dr Stupp is President of the EORTC. Professor Guilherme Ribas Sao Paulo, Brazil is an international authority in the cortical and subcortical anatomy of the brain. He is the first person who introduced the use of 3D images in brain anatomy. He is a sought after speaker in conferences and workshops around the world. Professor Hugues Duffau is Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery in Montpellier. Prof Duffau has pushed the limits of resection on LGGs to achieve supracomplete resections even in eloquent areas of the brain His most recent book Brain Mapping explores insights of brain plasticity from cortical mapping and brain surgery. Professor Walter Stummer is the surgeon who introduced the use of Gliolan (5-ALA) in the resection of HGGs. He has published extensively and is running numerous national and international trials. He is Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Munsten, Germany. Professor Lorenzo Bello leads the Brain mapping group and the Surgical Epilepsy group at the University of Milan, Italy. His surgical interests are intraoperative neurophysiology and imaged guided surgery. His research includes identification of molecular determinants of glioma angiogenesis and progression. Professor Andrea Szelenyi is Head of Clinical and Intra-operative Neurophysiology in the Neurosurgical Clinic at the University Hospital Düsseldorf, Germany. She is the President Elect of the International Society of Intraoperative Neurophysiology. Dr Antonio Mussi is an international authority in applied neurosurgical brain anatomy. He has spent years performing exclusively brain dissections with Albert Rhoton in Florida, USA. He runs successful courses in Brazil and Portugal. He practices neurosurgery in Brazil. Professor Sebastian Brandner, Head of the Division of Neuropathology at the National Hospital, and the UCL Institute of Neurology, London is a leading investigator on brain tumours, with major success in developing experimental models of brain tumours. Dr Juan Martino is a leading expert in the dissection of subcortical white matter tracts. His research and outstanding anatomical speciments have been published in numerous highly-cited articles and monographs. Dr Marco Catani is one of the world s leading authorities on DTI on brain anatomy and language. He pioneered the use of diffusion tractography to identify new connections in the human brain.
