Getting around London Improving health worldwide
What we will cover: Different types of ticket Student discount Underground Bus London Overground Cycling and walking Taxis
Transport for London website
Transport zones
What ticket should I buy? Oyster: Cash ticket:
Types of Oystercard 1: Season ticket (weekly / monthly / annual) 2: Pay-as-you-go ( Prepay )
Season ticket Weekly / monthly / annual Best for regular transport-users (4+ days per week?) Qualifies for 30% student discount Price according to how many zones needed Renew at tube stations, many shops, and on-line
Prepay Good for occasional use Does not qualify for 30% student discount But some Prepay discounts available to f/t students more later! Still much cheaper than buying individual tickets Daily price cap (stops charging you after you have used a certain amount of credit in one day) Top-up at tube stations, many shops, and on-line
Oystercards Oystercards are valid on tubes, buses, trams and London Overground You can combine Season Ticket and Prepay on one Oystercard: For example, you can have a monthly Oyster for zone 1 & 2, and add some prepay credit for the times when you go into zone 3 or beyond
Contactless payment Only if your UK bank card has the contactless symbol Can be used in the same way as Prepay Oystercard on buses and on the tube Will calculate how much you have spent in a day and will stop charging you once you reached the cap for the day Make sure you use the same card to enter and exit the station!
Student Discount 30% discount on weekly / monthly / annual Oystercard You apply on-line, application is then validated by LSHTM Full-time students are eligible LSHTM will also validate part-time students applications (because studying 15+ hours per week) LSHTM will validate applications (automatically) from Wednesday 30 September Application then takes up to 2 weeks to process by TfL Look out for next week from Registry
Student Discount To apply you will need: A colour, digital photo (try Snappy Snaps) Your LSHTM student ID number (6 digits from your applicant reference) A London address A valid debit or credit card to pay the 20 fee An active, valid address Apply on-line at
Underground (the Tube) Safe Quick Reliable (usually) Crowded at peak times: (07:30 09:30 and 16:30 19:00) Runs from around 05:30 to 00:00 New! Night Tube on 5 tube lines
Buses Slow! Best for local journeys of a few stops Cheap Great way to see London for less than 2 Please remember you cannot use cash to pay for your bus fare!
Good bus routes for sightseeing From Gower Street, right by the School (heading south) # 10: Oxford Street, Hyde Park, Royal Albert Hall, Harrods # 14: Piccadilly Circus, Green Park, Victoria & Albert Museum # 24: Leicester Square, Trafalgar Square, Horseguards Parade, Parliament Square, Westminster Abbey
Night buses For help in finding your Night bus home, call the 24-hour London Travel Information line on
London Overground Upgraded system Distinctive orange branding Modern trains (with a/c) Fast and reliable Less frequent than tube Avoids Central London
Cycling Quick and inexpensive Cycle lanes: improving but a bit patchy Risk of bike theft Check out BUG (LSHTM s Bicyle Users Group) for advice and info such as free cycle training web link on LSHTM intranet for advice on buying a used bike
TfL Cycle Hire Scheme Casual use or yearly membership 20% off yearly membership for students Casual use: use debit or credit card to get a release code Pay as little as 2 (for up to 30 min) Nearest docking stations to LSHTM : Malet Street or Alfred Place (off Store Street) Further info: TfL website Leaflet in your packs
Cycling Road Signs No cycling: Cycling and pedestrian shared route:
Cycle safety HGVs (trucks etc) have been involved in 53% of London cyclist deaths in the last four years, while accounting for only 4% of traffic 13 cyclists were killed in London in 2014 In that year, 600,000 cycle journeys were made each day in London
Walking Jaywalking (crossing the road when the man is red) is not an offence in the UK But take care in all cases! Remember we drive on the left!
Taxis Black cabs The only type of taxi legally allowed to pick up passengers on the street Can also be pre-booked (see TfL website) Mini cabs Licensed by Transport for London Must be pre-booked
A black cab
More black cabs:
Minicabs Licensed by Transport for London Look like normal cars Must be pre-booked It is illegal for minicabs to pick up customers in the street CABWISE: Transport for London s free app (finds nearest licenced minicabs) Or text CAB to 60835

The entitlement on your Oyster card will need to be renewed if you renew your National Railcard.
