3 FACULTY OF SCIENCE, ENGINEERING AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT The Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment at Deakin University places great emphasis on excellence in its teaching and learning, research and research training, community engagement and staff empowerment. 4 SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING The School of Engineering is proud to offer a unique approach to its educational delivery based on a philosophy of Project Oriented Design Based Learning where students experience real-world engineering challenges and deliver creative and novel solutions. The School of Engineering delivers courses in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical and electronics engineering, mechatronics engineering and industrial design that provide our graduates with a sound platform for the diverse employment opportunities that will exist in the future. Our recently occupied Centre of Advanced Design in Engineering Training (CADET) is testament to our vision and passion of being revolutionary in the Australian context and will provide some of the best future-focussed engineering and design facilities in the university sector. It will house virtual and real prototyping facilities allowing creative design solutions to be moved almost seamlessly from imagination to reality and then to manufacture in a single journey. 5 APPOINTMENT OF PROFESSOR OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING The Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering will provide outstanding research and academic leadership in the area of renewable and distributed energy resources, energy storage and energy management and promote the School within relevant academic and professional communities in Australia and internationally. He or she will initiate and contribute to research and program development, and entrepreneurial activity, in the area of electrical and power engineering and related areas. The appointee will contribute to service activities locally and internationally, particularly in relation to student recruitment, and will champion the strategic directions of the School, the Faculty and the University. The Professor will perform in a manner that advances the goals of the University s Strategic plan (LIVE the Future). In particular the Professor will be expected to: Undertake and publish high-quality research in alignment with accepted metrics for national and international reputation for scholarly merit. Generate research income through application to major funding bodies as well as through the active engagement with government, industry and community. Lead, support, supervise and mentor junior academic staff and research students. Actively contribute to the development of the School s research agenda Lead and make an outstanding contribution to the School s teaching programs that is consistent with the University s Strategic Plan and core commitments. Contribute to the planning, teaching, examining, marking, and administration of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Actively participate, as a leader, in activities that enhance the achievement of the goals of the School, Faculty and University. Engage with research, community, industry, government and professional partners and with other higher education institutions. Enhance the scholarly reputation of the School and University. The Professor will promote a collegial academic environment, fostering a culture of enthusiastic achievement and encouraging excellence. 5
6 ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT The School of Engineering is one of four Schools in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment. The School currently comprises approximately 50 teaching and research staff (FTE) with an enrolment (taught load) forecast of 1400 EFTSL for 2015 and offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses with a strong commercial focus and with an international orientation, enabling Deakin Engineering graduates to undertake work in a wide range of settings whether in Australia or abroad. The School s annual operating budget in 2015 is $25 million. The senior staff complement of the School comprises 16 Professors and Associate Professors. The Professor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering will make a significant contribution to the promotion, nationally and internationally, of the School s distinctive contribution to higher education and engage in research of the highest quality, evidenced by an exemplary record of journal publication, the generation of research income and supervision of higher degree by research candidates. ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS The appointee will be actively involved in teaching, research, consulting, linking to educational institutions, partnering and professional activities. The appointee will interact regularly with other senior staff within the University, their peers in other Universities both nationally and internationally, and with community, professional and industry organisations. THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE ESSENTIAL SELECTION CRITERIA Deakin University subscribes to the notion of leadership by example. Accordingly, in addition to being a proven and effective inspirational and indeed transformational leader, the successful candidate will also be a highly regarded academic in his/her own right with an impressive research record and internationally renowned scholar including a successful research grant record, having supervised doctoral students to completion and demonstrate a reputation as being an outstanding educator. The successful candidate will be a highly effective manager with high level management skills and a demonstrated capacity to positively shape and influence the activities of colleagues and staff and implement strategic measures in an effective and methodical manner. Applicants must have an acute understanding of the national and international engineering and technology sector and be highly regarded in the industry in order that he or she can aid in positioning the School so that its graduates continue to be highly employable. Key to successfully meeting the expectations of the position will be: A PhD in a relevant field. Demonstrable academic leadership and professional expertise in the field Evidence of recognition as a leader in electrical and electronics engineering Internationally recognised research and scholarly publication in relevant highly ranked specialist journals. Success in securing competitive research funding. Capacity to encourage and support research by junior colleagues and an ability to build and lead a research team, including mentoring junior staff in their research, with a particular emphasis on high quality publications and obtaining research grants. Demonstrated leadership in the maintenance of academic standards and the development of curriculum/programs of study. Evidence of the ability to build partnerships with professional, industry and government organisations to further relevant educational, research and entrepreneurial activities. The position is located at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus. Performance expectations and success will be measured by the achievement of agreed metrics on an annual basis and will be undertaken as part of the normal performance evaluation cycle of Deakin. Performance metrics will be established related to the broad areas of: teaching and student engagement, research profile and productivity, engagement and partnerships and School leadership and management. Outputs will be in alignment with international conventions of an Professor. A probationary period will apply. 6

REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS An attractive negotiable remuneration package is offered. This would include: Level E salary ($166,310 per annum). Research start-up support. Relocation support. TERM OF APPOINTMENT This is a full time and continuing appointment. It is envisaged that the successful candidate will commence around November 2015, however the specific date is open to negotiation.
