3 1 The Bachelor of Veterinary Biology/ Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (BVetBiol/ DVM) is an exciting, new and innovative six year combined degree course. It provides the knowledge, practical and generic skills to pursue diverse career options as veterinary scientists improving the care, management and welfare of animals COURSE OVERVIEW In first and second year of the BVetBiol/DVM you will gain a foundation in the biomedical and animal sciences that underpin veterinary science. Clinical cases and applied problems in veterinary practice will be used to promote integrated learning across subject areas. In years three to six, the emphasis shifts to professional knowledge and you will apply this training in clinical settings. The final year of the course is lecture free and you will participate in practice-based activities and the management and care of animal patients. This facilitates the transition into veterinary practice and provides the confidence and professional competence needed in the workplace. 4 2 CLINICAL TEACHING & LEARNING ENVIRONMENT CLINICAL EXPERIENCE The Faculty of Veterinary Science maintains teaching hospitals at Sydney and Camden, where you will work together with our team of specialist veterinarians in a well-equipped, high quality clinical teaching and learning environment. Referral and primary accession cases are seen at both sites, and the University Teaching Hospital at Camden also provides veterinary services to farms in the region. A wide range of companion animals, farm animals, racing animals, exotic and native species are seen. Your knowledge of medicine, surgery, anaesthesia, radiology, clinical pathology and production animal issues will be developed while you participate in small group teaching. Surgical and anaesthetic skills are honed in our community spey-neuter programs. ANIMAL HUSBANDRY PLACEMENTS You will complete placements at farms and other sites to gain experience in the major animal industries and to master animal handling and manipulative techniques with livestock. EDUCATION SUPPORT PRACTICE PROGRAM Education partnerships with veterinarians ensure that you are involved with veterinary clinical practice. These practices, located around the world, ensure that you gain an appreciation of the context and relevance of your veterinary studies. YEAR SIX PARTNERS IN VETERINARY EDUCATION During your lecture free final year program you will undertake clinical rotations through a variety of career option placements. As a student intern you will complete rotations at our University Veterinary Teaching Hospitals and with our Partners in Veterinary Education. Core placements are within the areas of small animal practice, rural mixed practice and government agencies. Elective rotations offer a wide variety of areas and enable you to focus on particular career interests such as government, industry, research specialist practice, equine and wildlife.

5 CAREER PATH The Bachelor of Veterinary Biology / Doctor of Veterinary Medicine opens up many career paths, including Private Practice Animal Welfare Academic Research Government Agencies & Departments Pharmaceutical Industry Agricultural Industries Education Sector International Animal Health PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION The Faculty holds and maintains continuous accreditation through the transition to a new veterinary program. Graduates of accredited programs are immediately eligible for registration with the Veterinary Surgeons Board in each state and territory in Australia and are recognised internationally by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (UK).

6 BE AT THE CUTTING EDGE OF MODERN VETERINARY MEDICINE AT SYDNEY, YOU WILL GAIN THE SKILLS TO BECOME A GLOBAL VETERINARY PROFESSIONAL Our aim is to ensure you are able to view issues from a population health framework, with a strong animal welfare consciousness, and provide influence and expertise at a local, national and global level. To achieve this, we have designed the BVetBiol/ DVM program with five broad competency themes: Veterinary Sciences Individual Animal Health and Welfare Population Health, Welfare and Production Professional Practice Research

7 You will have access to state-ofthe-art facilities and gain vital hands-on experience in the fully functioning teaching hospitals and wildlife hospital. You will have the opportunity to engage with world class staff on current areas of research and contribute to the creation of new knowledge through exciting research projects. You will study in a culturally diverse environment, with students from around the world. International students in the Faculty come from countries such as USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and many more. You will be a part of vibrant, diverse and unique social life at Sydney as a member of our veterinary student society, social, sporting and special interest groups.

8 6 DOMESTIC ENTRY DOMESTIC APPLICATIONS Admission requirements All domestic applicants (year 12 and non-recent school leavers) must lodge an application for admission via the Universities Admission Centre (UAC) in addition to the entry criteria below. As an applicant for the Bachelor of Veterinary Biology/Doctor of Veterinary Medicine you will be assessed on the following criteria: ATAR or equivalent if you are a year 12 applicant or Grade Point Average (GPA) if you have completed a minimum of one year full-time or equivalent study of an approved university degree at bachelor level. Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT): the multiple choice version of the STAT which is administered by the Universities Admissions Centre. All details regarding the multi-choice STAT are available from the UAC Website: Commitment to Veterinary Science form: Commitment to veterinary science is to be detailed on the prescribed faculty form which can be downloaded from the Faculty Website: sydney.edu.au/vetscience UAC applications: For further information regarding application procedures and application cut-off dates for domestic recent and nonrecent school-levers, please refer to the UAC website: Rural Entry Scheme If you have completed an Australian Year 12 examination in the last two years, have no tertiary records, and have completed at least the last four years of secondary education at a rural school, you may be eligible for admission under the Faculty of Veterinary Science Rural Students Entry Scheme. Under this scheme, a limited number of places will be available to applicants whose ATAR is not more than five points below the main round ATAR cut-offs. 9 INTERNATIONAL ENTRY 7 INTERNATIONAL APPLICATIONS Admission requirements International applicants will be assessed on the basis of academic performance, results in a standardised examination (STAT, ISAT or GRE ) and their demonstration of a commitment to the health and welfare of animals. Academic performance International students must have achieved a similar standard to that expected of an Australian student seeking entry. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their academic achievement in their final year of secondary education (Year 12 or equivalent) or their tertiary studies as appropriate, from a recognised University. Minimum GPA required is 2.80 on a 4.00 scale and applicants must demonstrate an aptitude for science based study. Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT): All on-shore international applications are required to take the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT).
