4 Technical skills and expertise Acquisition and processing of Leaf and Soil Gas exchange data. Acquisition and processing of Sap Flow data with different technologies Acquisition and analysis of Direct and Modulated Chlorophyll Fluorescence Analysis of soil physical and chemical properties Acquisition, quality check and gap-filling of Environmental sensors (Air temperature and humidity; wind speed and direction; Photosynthetic Active Radiation; Direct and Diffuse Radiation; Net Radiation; Soil moisture content probes; Ozono-meters; Nitrogen analysers) Analysis of the energy budget, carbon and water fluxes at community level using micrometeorology (Eddy Covariance) Analysis of the energy budget and derivation of Evapotranspiration using Surface Renewal technology Analysis of ecosystem level Ozone fluxes and repartition of fluxes in stomatal and non-stomatal Data acquisition and processing of Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) Data acquisition and processing of Thermal InfraRed Images Data acquisition and processing of Hyperspectral Reflectance at leaf and canopy scale Research Interests His general interests are in the response of species and ecosystems to environmental and biotic drivers. His main interests include: Understanding the biological mechanism underlying the relationships between biodiversity, functional diversity, and ecosystem functions Determining the contribution to ecosystem CO 2 fluxes of its various components (Above and Below ground biomass, Soil, Biological Crust), and how they vary in response to climate and nutrient availability Investigating the ecophysiological response of woody species to oxidative stresses (Drought, Salinity, Cold, Excess Light, Ozone) and their interaction Estimating the effects of Climate change on species distribution and its consequences in terms of Ecosystem services provided
5 Track record During his PhD he promoted interdisciplinary collaboration for the use of LiDAR as a tool for accurate upscaling of transpiration, leading to the first article on the topic. He was invited to participate in the ACCENT-VOCBAS campaign (2007) for his skills in plant water relations using sapflow technology and leaf level measurements. He achieved a high scientific productivity during the campaign thanks to his supportive interdisciplinary actions and his knowledge of ecosystem functions and micrometeorology. In 2008 he obtained a position at the Open Top Chamber facility of the Catholic University of Brescia to coordinate his research project on the interactions of ozone with salinity in Mediterranean species. In 2009 he obtained a Post-Doc position at the Univeristy of Sassari where he was task responsible of the EU project INCREASE. During this period he successfully developed a hyperspectral methodology to assess and monitor species-specific structural and biochemical properties in heterogeneous canopies of plant communities under climate manipulations. He was also involved in other research activities concerning climate change effects on species phenology, community water budgets, and fire risk. All experimental activities were performed in different sites around Europe. Between he acted as project manager of the EU project WASSERMed focusing on water security in the Mediterranean under climate change projections. During this period he successfully cooperated in the coordination of twelve partners including four North African countries insuring the timeliness of the deliverables and correct management of the nearly 4M euros budget. In the frame of the project he also coordinated the activities at regional level, successfully bringing together regional authorities to improve water management and develop adaptation strategies to climate change. In 2010 he activated a collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) focusing on the ecology of Mediterranean species using dendroecological approaches. In 2012, after deepening his knowledge on ecosystem functions and plant interactions, he started a research project on the effects of Nitrogen depositions on a coastal Mediterranean ecosystem and promoted collaboration with the University of Lisbon and the University of Madrid aiming at generalizing the effects of nitrogen on Mediterranean ecosystems. As Principal investigator of a Nitrogen addition experiment in a Mediterranean ecosystem, he was invited to present his experimental design and first results at the first CAPERMED (Committee on Air Pollution Effects Research on Mediterranean Ecosystems) meeting which has the specific objective to foster scientific collaborations among researchers but also interactions with staff from Environment and Conservation Agencies. In 2012, he was appointed as lab responsible for all experimental activities concerning ecophysiology and plant ecology. In July 2013he became member of TREEDIVNET, an international network on tree biodiversity and Ecosystem Function research, after establishing a Diversity Manipulation experiment in Sardinia. In 2013, he obtained a postdoc position to assess the effect of defoliators on plant physiology and light interception using LiDAR technology. In 2013, in collaboration with the Sardinian Forest authority, he established the first Biodiversity manipulation experiment with trees in the Mediterranean. In 2013 he became member of the scientific committee coordinating and promoting collaborative research activities between DipNET and the regional forest authority. During his career, he co-supervised four master thesis students, two of which from non Italian universities, and two PhD students. Presently he is cosupervising a PhD student focusing on a mechanistic explanation of the coexistence of plant species based on Functional Diversity and Niche models. He is also supervising a PhD student focusing on the effects of nitrogen addition on soil biological dynamics and on the community of the biological crust. He participated in international filed campaigns in: Italy, Hungary, Denmark, Belgium, Canada, and Mali.
