Pick up your reading log at the Public Service Desk to receive a sign-up prize. Read, listen, or watch to complete your reading log and receive another prize for completing this year s program. Come to the Library this summer to and fill your mind! Youth Services Summer Reading Program June 1 July 30 Materials to register for this year s Summer Reading Program are available on the tables in the youth department. Readers keep track of the time spent reading by coloring in a box on their reading log for every 15 minutes that they read, are read to, or that they read to anyone else. Readers record one title read for each five hours turned in. If you read more than one picture book in that time, you can choose your favorite. If you are reading chapter books, it is okay to put the same title down several times. Prize bag incentives are given out at five hour marks by age group. Readers who complete more than one reading log are able to enter a drawing. SUMMER READING PROGRAM ICE CREAM SOCIAL Saturday, July 31 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. All participants of the Summer Reading Program are welcome to attend this event. The ice cream will be provided by Uncle Harry s of Wisconsin located in Addison on Lake Street. Registration is required for each individual - young and old - who would like ice cream at this event to ensure that we have enough ice cream for everyone! This best selling novel tells the story of a man who meets with God four years after his daughter is brutally murdered. Don t Let s Go to the Dogs Tonight by Alexandra Fuller is a memoir. Living in Africa during the Rhodesian civil war, the author reflects on racism, wartime, and her family experiences with alcoholism and loss during turbulent times. 3 Adult Programs Food Fruit and Vegetable Bouquets Tuesday, July 6 at 7 p.m. Please join Chef Rose Deneen when she presents Fruit and Vegetable Creations. Chef Rose will demonstrate how to create a fruit and vegetable bouquet. She will give you tips on the best tools to use and the best ways to cut your fruit to make an edible sculpture. Nalesniki (Crepes, Blintzes) Workshop Tuesday, July 27 at 7 p.m. Learn how to make Polish nalesniki, the thinnest of pancakes. This easy dish can be served for dessert or for dinner, depending on the filling. You will be able to sample this thin pancake creation, receive practical preparation advice, hands-on practice, and sweet and savory recipes. Movement Chicago Cossacks Russian Music and Dance Thursday, July 15 at 7 p.m. A Family Entertainment Night Event The Chicago Cossacks will perform Russian, Cossack, Ukrainian and Gypsy dances. They will be accompanied by authentic music performed on Russian folk instruments including the Domra and Bayan. Join us for this truly authentic experience. Women s Self Defense Class Saturday, August 7 from 2-5 p.m. This workshop is devoted to the explanation, demonstration, and practice of simple self defense moves followed by the use of these moves on a padded assailant. This workshop is informative, safe, and fun! Introduction to the Internet Saturday, July 31 at 10:30 a.m. Topics covered include the features of the Vista operating system, computer hardware and software. File management will be explained. This is a hands-on class for beginners that will give participants time to practice. Browser basics will be explained as well as background information about the Internet. Learn to use search engines and search strategies to find information. A list of visited websites will be available. Participants should be comfortable using a mouse. A Kill-a-Watt can be used to monitor the efficiency of your current household appliances, as well as televisions and other major consumers of energy in your home, identifying the energy abusers in your home so that you can become a smarter energy consumer. SPIRIT OF THE EAGLE Saturday, August 14 9:30 a.m. to Noon Stop by the Library to experience this living history presentation on Native American culture. Native American Jon Jordan will set up a tipi on the Library s lawn. Patrons are invited to stop in and view cultural artifacts, ask questions and experience the past first hand.
