10 There is a greater need for action in the earthquake prevention sector in Turkey. The Turkish government has initiated an extensive campaign to rebuild and to renovate buildings endangered by earthquakes. It involves investments of 400 billion USD (100 billion USD only for Istanbul) over the course of 20 years. 70% of the Turkish population live in first and second degree seismic zones. Most buildings in Turkish urban areas are not earthquake-resistant. It is estimated that 6.5 million homes (i.e. 1/3 of all buildings) are at risk with 1.6 million in Istanbul. This campaign for rehabilitation and renovation is supposed to improve earthquakeresistance of urban areas so that the damage caused by possible natural disasters is minimized. Affected buildings are to be replaced or to be renovated. Over the course of 20 years, this campaign will produce enormous demand for solutions and technologies for rehabilitating buildings and even whole districts.
