1 Health and Social Care GCSE What is it all about?

2 Why study GCSE Health and Social Care? GCSE Health and Social Care is an ideal qualification for those pupils who want a broad background in health and social care or are considering a career in the care profession. Examples of employment which a GCSE in health and social care might lead to include: nursery nursing, social work, care assistant work and working with children This Double Award GCSE course is designed to suit those studying the subject and vocational learning for the first time. Grades will be awarded from A*A*-GG

3 Why study GCSE Health and Social Care? A wide range of topics from the health and social care industry are covered giving a broad introduction to the subject and opening up a wide range of possible careers in care related industries. Year 10 Work Experience will be in a care setting such as a nursery or residential home. This will provide an essential background to one of the controlled assessment aspects of the course which is worth 30% of the overall grade.

4 What will you study? Four modules are covered across the two years. Each module looks at a different aspect of Health and Social Care, but all are crucial in helping students getting an understanding of all the major issues.

5 Unit 1- Health, Social Care and Early Years Provision This unit is assessed by controlled assessment (30%) and looks at the following key questions: Who needs to use care services and why? How can people gain access to care services and what can prevent people from being able to use services they need? What types of care services are provided to meet people s needs? What values do care workers promote through their work? What does care work involve and what skills and qualities do care practitioners need to perform their work roles?

6 Unit 2: Understanding Personal Development and Relationships This module is worth 20% and assessed by a one hour exam. It will look at the following key questions: How do individuals grow and develop during each life stage? What factors affect human growth and development and how can they influence an individual's health, wellbeing and life opportunities? What factors influence the development of a person and what effect do relationships have on an individual s personal development? How can life events affect an individual's personal development and what support is available to them during these times?

7 Unit 3:Promoting Health and Wellbeing This module is worth 30% of the double award and is the second controlled assessment task. This module investigates: What is health and wellbeing? How can an individual's physical health be measured? What factors contribute positively to health and wellbeing throughout a person s life? What factors are risks to health and wellbeing and how do they have a damaging effect? How can individuals be motivated and supported to improve their health?

8 Unit 4: Safeguarding and Protecting Individuals This module is assessed by a one hour exam and is worth 20% of the double award. It looks at these key issues: Who requires safeguarding and what are the consequences of a lack of safeguarding? How do you prevent the spread of infection? How can you use first aid to deal with minor emergencies? How do you recognise potential risks to people and how can you provide protection to identified risks?

9 But what do students think? Current Health and Social Care students said what they thought was good about the course Learning about first aid was great! I enjoyed learning how to use medical equipment like the blood pressure monitors, peak flow meters and finger pulse meters to check people s health I created a health plan for my dad which he used with the doctor to help him lose weight and reduce his blood pressure! You get to do lots of experiments like looking at heart pressure and BMI It has helped me gain good knowledge and experience in working with people.

10 Where will it take me? How Health and Social Care has helped the students: One student is studying Psychology at 6 th form so has used HSC to get onto the course and wants to be a social worker. She particularly enjoyed learning about the law and how to interact with vulnerable people in a professional but caring way. Some students went onto Health and Beauty/hairdressing at college and they learnt how to treat customers or vulnerable people.

11 Where will it take me? Studying GCSE Health and Social Care will provide you with a solid foundation needed to work in this expanding industry. It can open you up to job opportunities within the industry such as nursery assistants, support workers, health assistants. You also have the opportunity to progress to further qualification which will be useful if you decide to follow any of the careers below Nursing Child Care Counsellor Social Work Care Managers Medicine Psychology Physiotherapy Early Years Teaching Nursery Nurse
