The demands of everyday life, the challenges of ageing, the pressures of youth, and the vagarious nature of childhood, all combine to affect the lives of children and adults in a variety of ways. The primary role of health and social care practitioners is to work with individuals, families and communities to identify need and develop, in partnership with service users, a series of therapeutic interventions aimed at improving the health, well-being and quality of their life. This challenges practitioners to think in new and innovative ways and sometimes challenges their own long held beliefs. Working in health and social care, can be physically and emotionally demanding yet simultaneously it has its own enormous intrinsic value. We learn throughout our lives, it begins the day we are born and the early years are now recognised as critical to that learning. Young children use all their senses to discover the world and adults involved in that education must do likewise. Working with young children requires fervour and zeal, patience and energy, commitment and dedication but most of all it demands creativity and a sense of fun. General Nurses provide nursing care to people in all these situations. Psychiatric Nursing is specialised type of nursing which concerns itself wholly with those who are experiencing a mental health challenge. This may include anxiety, depression or psychoses,. Intellectual Disability Nursing is a specialised type of nursing which concerns itself with working with those adults and children who have an intellectual disability and who may be unable to live fully independent lives. Its essential goal is to guide, support and work with these adults and children towards maintaining optimum health and well-being and social inclusion in day-to-day life. This involves working with each individual, their families or, carers and the general community. Practice placement forms an integral part of the course. Placements are normally 35/39 and you may be required to work nights, long shifts and weekends. Minimum entry requirements 1 Grade HC3 in two higher level papers, together with Grade od3 in four other subjects of the Leaving Certificate examination, to include Mathematics, Irish or English, and a laboratory science subject (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, joint Physics & Chemistry or Agricultural Science). 1 Equivalent international qualifications are also accepted. Refer to pages for more detail. 1 We accept certain FETAC Level 5 awards. You will find the complete list on page 246. Health declaration: Students are required to complete a medical selfassessment declaration and are subject to medical assessment/screening and a vaccination programme. Garda Vetting: Everyone who joins this course is vetted by the Gardaí (police). If the Gardaí raise an issue it must be addressed satisfactorily. If it is not, you will not fulfil your course requirements, in which case you will be required to leave the course. Please note that all courses requiring Gardaí vetting will only have places for non-eu candidates if there are not enough qualified EU candidates available to fill the course. Mature applicants: If you are 23 years or older by 1 January in the year of entry, and you do not have the minimum educational requirements, you should apply via the CAO using the mature code before 1 February. Mature applicants are required to undertake an aptitude test and must apply, separately, for that test via Career opportunities A career in this area will lead you to work with children and adults and their families and carers in their own homes, residential homes, respite units, day centres, schools and workplaces. Your role will vary with each individual case, working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support each person involved.
