My expectations: 1. You come to class every day (I understand life issues happen occasionally, but come to class anyway!) If you miss class, you are responsible for what I announce in class. 2. You TRY to do the math, even if math is not your best subject. I will do everything I can help you learn the material, but YOU must do the work. 3. You learn the course policies and follow them. 4. You must keep up with the schedule for assignments, quizzes and tests. (If we need to change the schedule, I will announce in class.) What you can expect from me: 1. I will do my best to explain the course material and work lots of examples so you can learn how to solve the problems. 2. I will post the notes I lecture in class on my webpage, so you can catch anything you missed. 1

2 3. I will post class announcements and schedule changes on my page, so you know what is coming up. 4. I will be as encouraging as possible, I want you to succeed. 5. I will follow the course policies too. Course Learning Materials: Course Learning Materials: The textbook, online quizzes, EMCF assignments, and additional help materials will be made available by logging into CourseWare at These first portion of these materials are freely available for the first two weeks of class. All students must purchase a Course Access Code and enter it on CourseWare by the first day of the third week of class to continue accessing the course learning materials. TEXTBOOK: Text: The learning materials for Math 2413; equivalent to Math 1431 at UH, including the textbook, are found online on the CourseWare site at Students are required to purchase an access code to access the learning materials. WEEKLY HOMEWORK: Homework will be collected on Tuesday in class, starting the second week of class, except on weeks when recitation does not meet. In these cases, additional information will be given. A list of problems will be posted from the course home page along with instructions. You must print off this file and provide your work and answers on the sheets. You may print double sided to save paper. Staple them in the upper left hand corner, and make sure that all information (name, etc.) is provided. If you do not follow the given directions, you will receive a ZERO. You must attempt ALL of the problems in order to receive ANY credit. Your work on your homework will not be returned. CLASSWORK: Classwork will be given everyday except the tests days and you work in groups. If you miss class, you will miss grade on classwork. Classwork will not be returned to you. WRITTEN QUIZZES: A short written quiz will be given as noticed. ONLINE QUIZZES: There will be 2-3 online quizzes given each week. You can attempt these quizzes up to 20 times, and the highest grade will be used for your score. You can access the quizzes by logging into CourseWare at Quizzes will not reopen once they have closed MAJOR EXAMS: There will be four exams and a Final Exam scheduled on the course calendar. 2

3 All students are expected to complete their exams in class at the scheduled time. ONLY ONE lowest of the four grades will be replaced with the final exam grade if it is to your benefit but THE ZERO FROM CHEATING WILL NOT BE REPLACED. If you are absent for a major test, there will NOT be any MAKE-UP TESTS. (You may take tests earlier than scheduled but the test will not be given after graded exams have been returned.) Note: If any student requires special testing accommodations, please provide the instructor with the appropriate form. The student is responsible for requesting any special testing accommodations through Counselling and the Testing Center. FINAL EXAM: At the end of the semester, you will have a comprehensive and mandatory final exam. The final exam grade will replace the lowest test grade if it is higher. If you miss the final exam, it will result a zero. REMEMBER: The final exam s grade will not be replaced by a regular exam s grade. ATTENDANCE: Attendance will be taken every day. If you miss class, you not only will be counted absent, you also miss a daily popper s grade. You are responsible for material covered and any announcement in your absence. Tardiness, non-participation, any form of disruptive behavior and or excessive absences may result in an administrative withdrawal from this class. Only miss class when you cannot avoid it. Please contact me by phone or anytime you will miss class. ACADEMIC HONESTY: Cheating or collaboration with others on any graded work is prohibited. Violations of this policy will result in a 0 for that work. ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Please turn off your cell phones while in class. I-pods and other such devices cannot be used in class. Please put these away before class begins. WITHDRAWING FROM CLASS: Do not expect to be dropped by your instructor if for some reason you are not able to complete the course. It is your responsibility to fill out the paperwork and drop this course on or before November 10th, then you will receive a W for the course. Students still enrolled after November 10th will receive an A, B, C, D, or F. However, your instructor reserves the right to drop any student who has had more than 3 unexcused absences or missed over 25 % the length of the course. EXPLANATION of SIX DROP RULE: Students who enrolled in Texas public institutions of higher education as first time college students during the Fall 2007 term or later are subject to section of the Texas Education Code, which states that an institution of higher education may not permit a student to drop (withdraw with a grade of W) from more than six courses, including courses that a transfer student has previously dropped at other Texas public institutions of higher education that have already been counted against their six drop limit. Each student should fully understand this drop limit before you drop any course. Please see a Counselor or Advisor in our Student Services area for additional information and assistance.
