Hastings & Prince Edward District School Board Windows XP Dial-Up Internet Access Configuration Getting Started Before you begin, obtain the following:! An HPEDSB Internet ( ) Account.! A 33,600-baud or higher speed modem with hardware based error correction. (57,600 baud V.92 modems recommended for best performance).! A computer running Microsoft Windows XP Home or Professional. (The Microsoft Windows operating system CD and/or your computer's installation CD may be required).! The most current edition of ITS Internet Support Software CD. (2002 Blue CD)! Print out these instructions to use during the configuration setup. Brief Overview This document provides instructions for establishing dial-up Internet access through your HPEDSB Internet account. The Microsoft Windows XP operating system is designed with Internet functionality in mind and includes the Internet Explorer web browser, Outlook Express application as well as other Internet applications such as Telnet. Once you have successfully obtained dial-up access to the HPEDSB, you can use the Netscape Navigator for web browsing and accessing your HPEDSB . If you encounter problems, please contact the ITS department during regular business hours. Logging Into Windows 1. Log on to the Windows XP operating system as Administrator Dial-up Setup 2. Click on the button and select All Programs > Accessories > Communications. 3. Click on the New Connection Wizard icon.
A Network Connection Wizard window should appear. Click the Next button. 4. Select the radio button next to Connect to the Network at my workplace then click the Next button.
5. Select Set up my connection manually then click on the Next button. 6. Select Connect using a dial-up modem then click on the Next button.
7. In the Connection Name field enter HPEDSB Dialup then click on the Next button. Enter in the Phone Number to Dial field for all Staff & Employees who will be dialing in from a Southern Service Area. This applies to all users for whom the Bancroft area is NOT a local call. Enter for users in the Northern Service Area. Click on the Next button.
8. Enter your HPEDSB account name in User name field. (Warning: Do Not to the User name or the login procedure will fail). 9. Enter your HPEDSB account password in Password field. 10. Select Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the internet from this computer only if you are the only person with access to this computer. Selecting this option saves the password allowing anyone to establish a connection with your user name. 11. Select Make this the default Internet connection if you have more than one internet connection you would like to make HPEDSB your primary connection. (This selection does not prohibit the use of other connections).
12. Select Add a shortcut to this connection on my desktop. Click on the Finish button. Your computer should now dial into the correct modem pool at HPESDB and log you on to the system. A Typical Dial-Up Procedure to the HPEDSB Internet Service Once your system is set up for Internet Access to the HPEDSB follow the procedure below for access to you account and internet browsing. 1. If you created the dial-up connection following the instructions above, an icon was placed on your desktop. Double-click the dial-up icon to open the connection window. 2. Click on the Dial button and wait until you receive a connected message.
3. Once you have made a successful connection you should notice an icon at the bottom right corner of the Windows taskbar. 4. Start your web browser Netscape or Internet Explorer. 5. When you are finished with your Internet session close your Internet applications (Netscape or Internet Explorer). 6. Double click the icon on the far right corner of the Windows taskbar then click on the Disconnect button. Mail Settings: Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) mail.hpedsb.on.ca Incoming Mail Server (IMAP) mail.hpedsb.on.ca Note: For to work correctly you must select IMAP for your incoming mail server. Attention: While the ITS department distributes software to support employees with the service we offer there exists the possibility that these applications or configurations may conflict with existing software and setups. The Board makes no guarantees, expressed or implied regarding the operation of the software, nor does it accept and liability for damages resulting from its use. Please see the Information Technology Services section of the HPEDSB web page for details about ITS Policy and the services we provide.
