The students used molecular technques to study populaton genetcs related to the mgratory behavor of alewves, a fsh commonly found n Mane rvers. Salmon are well known to swm back to ther natve rvers to spawn, but the fdelty of alewves to ther natve streams s unclear. The students examned DNA from fsh harvested from two dfferent rvers n Scarborough Marsh: Mll Brook and the Nonesuch Rver. An nterestng hstorcal feature of the project was that the majorty of the fsh were collected by ther professor, Bran Tarbox, 35 years ago when he was dong the research for hs master s thess at Unversty of Mane! The students compared the fsh from the two rvers by extractng DNA from fsh scales that Professor Tarbox had saved. They solated DNA from the scales and then amplfed t usng Polymerase Chan Reacton. Once they had a larger amount of DNA sample they examned the sequences and looked for dfferences between the two sets of fsh. Throughout ths process the students learned new sklls and got to spend an entre week (sometmes stayng n the lab untl 10 PM) n the modern research faclty at MDIBL. Students n the Botechnology, Marne Scences, and Lberal Studes Bology program partcpated ths year. Geneveve Foley sad, The short course was fantastc! Gettng to work n a real lab alongsde scentsts was a truly ncredble and valuable experence. The students wll work to fnsh up ther data collecton durng the sprng semester, and then plan to present ther results at the 39th Annual Mane Bologcal and Bomedcal Scences Symposum, whch wll be held n Aprl at MDIBL. The entre cost of the course, ncludng scentfc supples, housng, food and travel was supported by the IDeA Networks of Bomedcal Research Excellence grant provded to SMCC by the Natonal Insttutes of Health, and admnstered by Mount Desert Island Bologcal Laboratores from the Natonal Center for Research Resources. 4 Seawolves Athletc Club to Host a Specal Alumn Game The annual alumn game s fast approachng. The date ths year for the games s Saturday, February 11th. Athletc Drector Matt Rchards plans to have the men s alumn play 12pm-1pm, followed by a bref lunch (pzza, sandwches, etc.) n the conference room, and then watch the women s and men s team play Unversty of Mane-Machas. Women tp off at 2pm and the men play at 4pm. After the game, the Seawolves Athletc Club wll host a recepton for all alumn, famly, and frends. Locaton TBA. Ths year s unque as the club wll be honorng the memory of alumnus, Tm Hagerman. Tm played for Rchards n 2005, 2007 and He was dagnosed wth cancer last year and passed away on December 26. In hs memory, the athletc department wll be retrng hs #44 jersey. A ceremony wll take place at the concluson of the women s game and before the start of the men s game. The Hagermans are hopng to rase a enough money for an endowment scholarshp to ensure the memory of Tm and to beneft future men s basketball players. 5 SMCC Student Competes n Almost Famous Chef Competton SMCC s Sara Cormer wll be one of eght students from culnary schools throughout New England to compete n the San Pellegrno Almost Famous Chef Competton at Bunker Hll Communty College n Boston on February 7. The competton was founded n 2002 as a mentorng program that connects top culnary students wth establshed chefs and nfluental meda. Snce then, ths program has helped launch hundreds of culnary careers and refned the sklls of a new generaton of chefs. Throughout the Almost Famous Chef Competton, student chefs are gven the opportunty to gan unmatched experence, whle cookng n some of the most prestgous ktchens n the world. Cormer grew up n northern Mane and graduated from Presque Isle Hgh School n 2002 before headng to the Unversty of Mane (UMO). Whle at UMO, Sara studed art and art hstory, earnng a bachelor s degree n studo art n After graduaton she moved to Portland and began workng at the small local restaurant, Beale Street BBQ, n South Portland. Whle workng at Beale Street she fell n love wth Portland s restaurant and art scene; or what she calls a great cty n a small package. Whle workng at Beale Street she also became nterested n the restaurant busness. Her new nterest, coupled wth her love of food (she s a Food Network fanatc), led Sara to decde that perhaps her callng was n the food busness. After hearng good thngs about SMCC s culnary program from coworkers who had attended the school, Sara enrolled n the fall of It was love at frst sght. She descrbes her classes at SMCC as, fun and nformatve thanks to a great group of nstructors. In addton to beng an outstandng student wth a 3.9 GPA, Cormer s also nvolved n many extracurrcular actvtes. She s a member of the Amercan Culnary Federaton, the Culnary Knowledge Bowl team, and has receved scholarshps for her partcpaton n the 2011 Harvest on the Harbor. Sara s dream s to one day have a busness of her own. She would lke to open a neghborhood bakery where she knows her patrons by name and where people enjoy delcous food at a great prce. She wll graduate from SMCC n the sprng of 2012 and contnue to work to make that dream come true. Partcpants n the competton wll be judged n all aspects of the culnary process, ncludng santary food handlng, recpe accuracy and proper utlzaton of ngredents, meetng tme lmts, flavor, texture and degree of doneness, cookng technque, servng method and presentaton, porton sze, creatvty and practcalty, menu and ngredent compatblty, flavor, texture and degree of doneness. In addton, judges wll also take nto consderaton the chef s personal presentaton of dsh, confdence n culnary sklls and cookng style. Each compettor must have a sgnature dsh that s an orgnal recpe and must be sutable, both n qualty and presentaton, to be served n a fne dnng establshment. Cormer s dsh s an herb-crusted seared duck breast wth Pommes Anna and wlted ranbow chard wth bacon and apples. 6 Early College for ME to Receve Award of Excellence Each year, the New England Board of Hgher Educaton (NEBHE) presents Regonal Excellence Awards to ndvduals and organzatons that have shown exceptonal leadershp on behalf of hgher educaton and the advancement of educatonal opportunty. State Mert Awards honor the nnovatve work of organzatons, nsttutons or ndvduals n each New England state. On March 2, NEBHE wll present the Mane State Mert Award to Early College for ME. Early College for ME (ECforME) s a statewde program wth staff at each Mane communty college. Staff are charged wth puttng hgh school students who otherwse would be unlkely to contnue ther educaton on a path to college. Chrstopher Ike s the ECforME Regonal Drector on SMCC s campus. Chrs works n 11 area hgh schools wth over 250 students each year to get them to go to college drectly from hgh school. The vast majorty of Chrs s students choose SMCC. Lberal Studes student Kata Fonseca (South Portland 10) says, [ECforME] s the best thng that happened to me. Wthout ther help, I probably wouldn t be here. Asked what he lked best about ECforME, Davd Zhao (Portland 11) n Communcatons-New Meda sad, Chrs Ike hmself. ECforME students from other regons may also choose SMCC. Sad Ethan Vonderhede (Messalonskee 11), Archtectural/Engneerng Desgn, Knowng I would have an extra place for support made college less ntmdatng. For Culnary Arts student Reva-Mare Hewey (Mt. Vew 11), Havng the Early College for ME support made the [applcaton] process a lot easer. No one else n my famly has gone to college, so I wasn t sure where to begn. ECforME s a comprehensve college transton program that targets hgh school students who are Early College for ME has made a real dfference n the lves of hundreds of Mane hgh school students who ddn t thnk college was an opton. undecded about hgher educaton but who have the potental to succeed n college. The program serves over 1,700 hgh school students a year at 74 schools across the state, provdng support and gudance throughout the college plannng process, the opportunty to take up to two communty college courses durng ther senor year of hgh school, and scholarshps to the communty colleges of up to $2,000. Snce 2003, Early College for ME has engaged over 5,200 students, and wth avalable fundng was able to award scholarshps to over 1,600 students. Students are selected for partcpaton n ECforME by ther hgh school durng ther junor year. To be selected, students must be n good academc standng and be capable of succeedng n college but have no plans yet for college. Ike vsts the 11 hgh schools n hs terrtory regularly. Each year, 250 hgh school junors and senors and 100 SMCC students are engaged n the Early College for ME program. Snce ts ncepton, 413 students have receved the scholarshp and contnued ther educaton at SMCC. Early College for ME has made a real dfference n the lves of hundreds of Mane hgh school students who ddn t thnk college was an opton, sad MCCS Presdent John Ftzsmmons. The program s talented staff has worked trelessly to support students on the sometmes challengng road to hgher educaton. 7 SMCC s Mddle Name The Rotary Club of Breakwater Daybreak welcomed newest Rotaran, Presdent Ron Cantor, who contnues to show hs commtment to communty nvolvement. I began to recognze the value of placng the college at the heart of the communty and the communty at the heart of the college. I adopted that phrase as my motto because t was all becomng clear: by buldng a strong, vbrant communty, the communty s college would grow strong and vbrant. Perhaps that s why communty s the mddle name of Southern Mane Communty College. SMCC s John Eder and EMCC s Nchole Racklff have just arrved n Ireland for the sprng semester at our partner nsttuton, Cork Insttute of Technology (CIT) n Cork. The exchange s a wonderful opportunty for students to experence college and culture on the other sde of The Pond. Louse has been to the U.S. before. She spent the summer of 2009 workng n restaurants n Newport, RI. She hals from Cork and s the second-oldest of four sblngs. Madelene s from Dubln and s the youngest of fve ssters. She spent the Chrstmas holdays n Florda wth her famly, then drove north wth her mother to Mane and SMCC. Both Scholars have a bachelor s degree n socal care from CIT. Louse s takng advanced courses n Behavoral Health and Human Servces at SMCC. Back n Ireland, she may go on for a master s degree n socal work. Madelene s takng lberal studes courses here, whle she sorts out what she wants to do for a career. Ther bggest surprse s the amount of readng requred. CIT students spend more tme n class and less tme preparng for class, and the relatonshp between students and nstructors s much more formal. Havng class partcpaton contrbute to ther SMCC grade s takng them awhle to get used to. Both are enjoyng ther courses and also the attenton they get when they speak. SMCC Offers Free Weatherzaton Classes Wth a recent spke n ol prces and cuts to the Low Income Heatng Assstance Program (LIHEAP) threatenng to leave many Maners out n the cold, SMCC offered free weatherzaton courses to help ease the burden of the Mane wnter. The classes, offered through SMCC s Contnung Studes Department, were taught at the Sustanable Energy Alternatves Center (SEA Center) on the South Portland campus. The federal government recently announced that fundng for Mane s LIHEAP program would be reduced to $23 mllon, a $33 mllon cut from prevous levels. In addton to reduced ad, Mane famles are facng rapdly ncreasng fuel costs, wth the prce of heatng ol ncreasng $0.14 a gallon durng the month of January. Dr. Ron Cantor, Presdent of SMCC, sad, Our College s msson s to empower people wth sklls to respond to a changng world. By offerng a free weatherzaton workshop, we gve people the opportunty to stay warm at a tme when ol prces are rsng and heatng assstance and temperatures are droppng. Durng the two-hour class students learned how heat escapes houses and what cost-effectve measures maxmze energy effcency. The workshop focused on no- or low-cost mprovements and ncluded a dscusson about fnancng opportuntes for largerscale solutons. Partcpants also learned nstallaton tps and technques for usng basc weatherzaton materals. People learned very low-cost ways to reduce ther energy consumpton by up to 25%, sad John Brautgam, Drector of SMCC s SEA Center. For a lot of famles, that could be the dfference between stayng warm ths wnter or havng ther ol tank run dry. The Contnung Studes Department at SMCC offers professonal development, personal nterest, and workforce tranng programs at the College s South Portland and Mdcoast campuses, the Bath Center, and onlne.
