Please dscuss ths memo wth all staff at your next staff meetng. Sx new materals have been developed to accompany new food package educaton for pregnant, breastfeedng and postpartum women. All of these materals wll be automatcally shpped to all local agency admnstratve stes as soon as possble. It s possble that staff may need to start teachng the new group class wthout all of the materals. Please be on the look out for a WIC Drector emal update at the end of March. The materals are: 1. New Food Packages and The Importance of Exclusve Breastfeedng n the Frst Month group lesson, BF Memo #08-164, posted on December 19, 2008 announced that ths lesson s a requred core class for all pregnant moms Aprl 1, 2009 through September 30, The fnal lessons n Englsh and Spansh were maled out to all local agences at the end of February and can also be found on the webste at: The lesson code wll appear n the Texas WIN Pck Lst after March 1, WIC Food Packages for Moms & Infants brochure - Ths s a new requred brochure to be gven to all pregnant moms startng Aprl 1, Begnnng Aprl 1, 2009 (or as soon as brochures are receved f they are receved after Aprl 1, 2009) every pregnant partcpant should receve ths brochure durng ndvdual counselng at her ntal pregnant certfcaton. Partcpants should be counseled on the mportance of exclusve breastfeedng n the frst month and food package optons avalable to moms and nfants. Pregnant women who were certfed pror to Aprl 1, 2009 wll receve ths brochure as a handout to group lesson BF startng n Aprl. The Hosptal Experence: What to Expect & How to make t Memorable - Ths brochure s the second of two handouts that accompany group lesson BF It provdes antcpatory gudance to pregnant moms about what to expect n the hosptal and how to advocate for themselves and ther babes n order to exclusvely breastfeed. The brochure ncludes a removable Infant Feedng Plan that moms can complete and gve to hosptal staff that expresses the mother s nfant feedng goals and desres. New WIC Food Packages for Moms & Infants - WIC Staff Teachng Tools - These are onepage, blngual (front and back), 8.5 X 11 nch lamnated vsuals of the three food packages for moms and nfants. Exclusvely Breastfeedng Food Package Mostly Breastfeedng Food Package Formula Feedng Package The tools can be used durng ndvdual counselng, dscusson groups, and small group classes to show food packages sde-by-sde for comparson purposes. The teachng tools nclude approxmate cash values to help staff market the breastfeedng food packages. The exclusvely breastfeedng food package teachng tool also shows vsuals of breast pumps and breastfeedng counselor assstance as addtonal ncentves. 5 New Food Package Dscusson Ponts for Moms wth Infants Talkng ponts to be added to all nfant/postpartum certfcatons and classes startng October 1, Gve each mom a copy of: Food Packages are Changng flyer WIC Food Packages for Moms & Infants brochure Optonal: WIC staff can use the new WIC Food Packages for Moms & Infants WIC staff teachng tools durng ndvdual counselng and small classes. Dscusson ponts WIC food packages are changng for all WIC partcpants pregnant moms, breastfeedng and formula-feedng moms, nfants, and chldren. If your nfant wll be less than one year of age on October 1, 2009, these handouts show how the changes wll affect your food benefts after October 1 st. You wll learn about changes to other WIC food packages n other classes o f your nfant wll be over one year of age on October 1 st, o f you have other chldren on WIC, or o f you are currently pregnant. The rest of ths dscusson apples only to women whose nfants wll be less than 1 year of age on October 1 st. Pages 10 through 15 of WIC Food Packages for Moms & Infants show the new food packages for moms and nfants. Ask partcpants to turn to pages and/or hold up the exclusvely breastfeedng food package staff teachng tool. If you choose the exclusvely breastfeedng package on October 1 st, these are the foods you wll get for yourself. If you choose ths package and your baby s over 6 months old on October 1 st, your baby wll get the exclusvely breastfeedng package for nfants. Ask partcpants to turn to pages and/or hold up the mostly breastfeedng food package staff teachng tool. If you choose the mostly breastfeedng package on October 1 st, these are the foods you wll get for yourself. If you choose ths package and your baby s over 6 months old on October 1 st, your baby wll get the mostly breastfeedng package for nfants. Ask partcpants to turn to pages and/or hold up the formula food package staff teachng tool. If you choose the formula package on October 1 st and your baby s less than 6 months old, these are the foods you wll get for yourself. If you choose ths package and your baby s over 6 months old on October 1 st, you wll no longer receve WIC food but your baby wll get the formula package for nfants. 1

6 Repeat and clarfy: If you choose the exclusvely or mostly breastfeedng food package, you wll get WIC food benefts for yourself untl your baby s frst brthday. If you choose the formula food package, you wll receve WIC foods for yourself untl your baby s 6 month old. If your baby s over 6 months old on October 1 st, you wll no longer receve WIC foods for yourself. Remnd partcpants, You wll be recevng more nformaton on food package changes n the next few months n the form of addtonal group classes, web lessons, brochures, and a take-home DVD that wll explan the changes n detal that you wll receve at your frst appontment after October 1 st, If a partcpant asks you a queston that you cannot answer, tell the partcpant they wll be recevng more nformaton on new food packages n the next few months. 2

7 Food Packages Are Changng Startng In October 2009! The WIC Food Packages for Moms & Infants brochure explans upcomng changes to the food packages for you and your baby. Changes to your food benefts wll occur at your frst food beneft ssuance appontment after October 1, If your baby s less than one year of age at that appontment, you wll be asked to choose from the three packages descrbed below Exclusvely Breastfeedng Food Package Ths s the largest food package for moms and babes. Moms and babes can receve ths package untl baby s frst brthday. Ths package does not contan nfant formula Mostly Breastfeedng Food Package Ths package contans less food than the exclusvely breastfeedng food package but more than the formula food package. Ths package ncludes a lmted amount of formula. The amount wll vary dependng on the age of your nfant. Moms and babes can receve ths package untl baby s frst brthday Formula Food Package Ths s the smallest food package for moms and babes. Ths package ncludes more formula than the mostly breastfeedng package but n lmted amounts. The amount wll vary dependng on the age of your nfant. Babes receve ths package untl ther frst brthday. Moms receve ths package untl ther babes are sx months of age. Please read the WIC Food Packages for Moms & Infants brochure so you wll be prepared to choose one of the new food packages at your frst appontment after October 1, If you have questons about the food package changes, please talk to your WIC staff. Las mamás y los bebés pueden recbr este paquete hasta el prmer cumpleaños del bebé. Este paquete no contene fórmula para bebés Paquete de almentos: lactanca materna cas exclusva Este paquete tene menos almentos que el de la lactanca materna exclusva, pero más que el de la fórmula para bebés. Este paquete tene una cantdad lmtada de fórmula. La cantdad varará dependendo de la edad de su bebé. Las mamás y los bebés pueden recbr este paquete hasta el prmer cumpleaños del bebé Paquete de almentos: fórmula para bebés Este es el paquete más pequeño de almentos para mamás y bebés. Este paquete tene más fórmula para bebés que el paquete de lactanca materna cas exclusva, pero en cantdades lmtadas. La cantdad varará dependendo de la edad de su bebé. Los bebés recben este paquete hasta su prmer cumpleaños. Las mamás recben este paquete hasta que sus bebés cumplan 6 meses de edad.
