Hlton Foundaton. The school wll help address the hosptalty ndustry s growng need for hghly educated, dverse management. We are pleased to support DePaul Unversty n launchng ths nnovatve hosptalty leadershp program n a sector known for creatng employment opportuntes for all, especally gven the foundaton s legacy n ths ndustry, says Edmund J. Can, vce presdent, grant programs for the Conrad N. Hlton Foundaton. The foundaton hopes that ts challenge grant wll motvate others, partcularly those from the hotel and restaurant sector, to support ths mportant endeavor. Based n DePaul s College of Commerce, the school wll offer a bachelor s degree n hosptalty leadershp begnnng n fall 2009 to prepare students for management roles at hotels, restaurants, conventon and toursm ventures, spas and related lesure ndustres. The program wll address a growng shortage of qualfed, sklled employees and a sgnfcant lack of dversty among hosptalty managers, as well as provde educatonal opportuntes for qualfed Chcago hosptalty workers desrng to enter management but lackng the educatonal background. Ongong fundrasng wll support DePaul s plans to add graduate degrees, contnung educaton programs and a research center at the school. CORPORATE GIVING CAMPAIGNS As of Oct. 1, 2008 Amerprse Fnancal Accountng frm RSM McGladrey, fnancal plannng frm Amerprse Fnancal, law frm Mayer Brown and nvestment bank Merrll Lynch are launchng campagns ths year n support of DePaul. Corporate Gvng Campagns create a DePaul communty wthn a company by connectng alumn to each other and DePaul. Campagns nclude specal DePaul events, volunteer opportuntes and an optonal gvng component. Our campagn s about reconnectng wth an old frend, says Paul Nockels (COM 92), managng drector n RSM McGladrey s Chcago offce and a champon for the company s campagn. DePaul played an mportant role n preparng me for my career, and ths s a phenomenal opportunty to help DePaul through gvng or volunteerng, he says. Fellow McGladrey Corporate Champon Katarna Babc (COM 05) sees both a personal and professonal reason for beng nvolved. The campagn has reconnected me to DePaul and gven me the opportunty to see how much DePaul has accomplshed and how t has mproved even snce I graduated, says Babc. On the professonal sde, I recrut DePaul students to McGladrey, and ths campagn s a great way to buld a connecton between students, alumn at McGladrey and the unversty. In the last fscal year, Corporate Gvng Campagns rased some $220,000 for DePaul through employee gfts and corporate matchng gfts. 3 Department of Nursng receves $100,000 grant to help address nursng shortage DePaul Unversty s Department of Nursng was recently awarded a onetme grant of $100,000 from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundaton (RWJF) through the RWJF New Careers n Nursng Scholarshp Program. Launched by RWJF and the Amercan Assocaton of Colleges of Nursng (AACN), the RWJF New Careers n Nursng Scholarshp Program s a groundbreakng natonal ntatve that seeks to help allevate the naton s nursng shortage by dramatcally ncreasng the number of students n accelerated nursng programs. DePaul wll use the grant to award 10 scholarshps of $10,000 each to students enrolled n the unversty s accelerated Master s Entry to Nursng Practce (MENP) program durng the academc year. DePaul wll gve preference to students from groups underrepresented n nursng or from dsadvantaged backgrounds. Grant fundng also wll help leverage new faculty resources and provde mentorng and leadershp development resources to ensure that scholarshp recpents successfully complete the program. We are tremendously excted about the award program and DePaul nursng students ts potental to ncrease dversty not only n our program but n the professon at large, says Susan Poslusny, Ph.D., RN, char of the nursng department and project drector. The ACLU awarded her the Harry Kalven Freedom of Expresson Award for leadershp n fghtng for open access to all types of materals and books. Nobel laureate speaks to Presdent s Club In September, some 80 Presdent s Club members and others attended a specal presentaton by Leon Lederman, Nobel Laureate n physcs and drector emertus of Ferm Natonal Accelerator Laboratory. Lederman argued that poltcans and busness professonals need to understand scence to address crtcal ssues such as economc uncertanty and the educaton system. 4 Leadng famly lawyer pledges $200,000 to College of Law Bernard Rnella (JD 61), a leadng Illnos famly lawyer and senor partner of Rnella & Rnella, Ltd., and hs wfe, Glora, recently pledged $200,000 to create the Bernard B. and Glora L. Rnella Endowed Scholarshp n the College of Law. Students and new lawyers are under enormous fnancal pressure from educaton loans, says Bernard Rnella. I hope we can help take away some of ths pressure and let students focus on practcng law, whch benefts both students and ther employers. The scholarshp contnues more than 20 years of support for the College of Law. In addton to hs phlanthropc support, Rnella has hred DePaul students as nterns and employees, and he serves on several College of Law commttees. DePaul provded me wth a great, practcal educaton and connectons to Chcago s judcal and legal professons, says Rnella. I feel an oblgaton to gve back to my alma mater. Followng graduaton, Rnella joned the frm founded by hs parents and fellow alumn, Samuel (JD 28) and Kathryn (JD 27). 5 In hs words... Jm Troxel Whle n hs fortes, Jm Troxel (SNL MA 93) returned to school to earn a master s degree from DePaul s School for New Learnng (SNL). He subsequently founded Mllenna Consultng, a Chcago-based frm that helps publc servce organzatons manage change. Troxel remans nvolved wth DePaul, ncludng servng as an advsory councl member for the Presdent s Club, DePaul s premer annual gvng socety. Hs wfe, Karen, earned a master s degree from SNL n How has DePaul made a dfference n your lfe? Troxel: SNL was the perfect match for me as an adult learner, as t enabled me to create a master s degree around my professonal nterest n organzatonal transformaton. Shortly after graduaton, I publshed my frst book and launched my consultng busness, nether of whch would have happened had t not been for DePaul. Why do you make unrestrcted gfts to DePaul? Troxel: I began by drectng my gfts to SNL, snce that s where I receved my degree. As I became more nvolved wth DePaul, I realzed that all of ts programs from the Coleman Entrepreneurshp Center to the Egan Urban Center to the Steans Center for Communty-based Servce Learnng are worthy of support. The Reunon Dnner and Celebraton, held at the Unon League Club of Chcago, attracted more than 200 alumn and guests, ncludng three ssters who marred three fraternty brothers after meetng them at DePaul. Speakng for the three couples, Patrca Cenkus (LAS 62) says, We enjoyed our years [at DePaul] and now we lke to look at the new campus. Other Reunon events ncluded a Reunon Luncheon n honor of graduates from 50 or more years ago, a young alumn gatherng at McGee s Tavern & Grlle, and tours of the Lncoln Park Campus, Loop Campus and the new Monsgnor Andrew J. McGowan Scence Buldng. Nearly 250 alumn, frends and faculty also attended the College of Law Reunon held at the Hotel InterContnental.
