This year ISAT testing begins on March 3 rd and concludes on March 14 th. Millstadt has developed a rich history of academic excellence. While this is not the only thing that defines us, it is the most outward and visible tool used. The administration, staff, and students take this very seriously. Attendance is especially important during this time. Please emphasize the importance of the test preparation and administration with your student. Although the bulk of the emphasis is placed on our 3 rd - 8 th grade teachers, it is important to realize that preparation for success begins when our students enter our doors for the very first time. 2 Community Consolidated School District No. 160 A Note from the Superintendent: I hope everyone has been able to stay warm and safe during the past few weeks. The winter weather has wreaked havoc on our educational schedule and it has been difficult to conduct school in a normal manner. Future forecasts in the month of February have predicted continued winter weather. Hopefully, we will be able to avoid any additional snow days. Currently, Wednesday May 28 th, is the last scheduled day of school attendance for our District. We have used every emergency day previously scheduled into the current calendar. Therefore, the final calendar will not be completed until March The District is tentatively looking at Friday, May 23 rd as a potential graduation date. We hope to finalize this date at the February 18 th Board of Education meeting. State testing is quickly approaching! We want our students to be at their best for these examinations. We ask for parents assistance by making certain their child gets a good night s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast each day. Also, remain positive and encourage your child to do their best on the test. With your support and involvement, your child will be well on their way to a positive attitude during state testing. The District revenues have been reduced over the past few years due to cuts by the State of Illinois and lower property values. Once again the District is researching ways to cut expenses. The District needs to cut between $300, and $500, to eliminate deficit spending. While this is never an easy task - it is imperative to keep the District in a healthy financial position. We have developed a Think Tank with members of the administration and faculty to review ideas and concepts. We will do everything possible to ensure we continue to provide an exceptional education for our students. This past month, the District sent home surveys for a grant application. We appreciate all of those parents who took the time to complete the forms and return them to the school. We are working in conjunction with the Village of Millstadt to apply for a grant to help pay for new sidewalks in the community. These sidewalks would allow students to have safe routes via walking or riding their bike to school. As always, I want to thank our staff for their hard work and dedication to our students and community. They are truly the backbone or our District. Jon Green Superintendent Page 2

3 Community Consolidated School District No. 160 Weather Alert/School Closing In case of inclement weather that would make holding school impossible, a SchoolReach message will be sent to the phone number you provided to school as soon as a decision has been made. You may also follow these guidelines: TV Fox Channel 2 KMOV Channel 4 KSDK Channel 5 Radio KMOX/1120 AM Every attempt will be made to make school closing decisions by 7:00 a.m. When weather worsens, during the school day, we WILL NOT dismiss early unless the road commissioners will not be able to have the roads passable by 3:15 p.m. Also, please DO NOT CALL the school number if the weather worsens during the school day. This ties up phone lines needed to provide notice of the school closing and to alert necessary personnel such as bus drivers. This is a day when parents, family members, teachers, and business men and women take time out from their busy schedules to share their passion for reading with MCS & MPC students. There will be 20-minute reading sessions blocked out during the school day. You can choose to read to one or as many classes as you would like! You will be able to request your child's class or a specific grade level. The library will have books available to read from, or you may bring your own books to read. The deadline to sign up to read will be Thursday, April 3rd. We are so lucky to have local health and fitness experts that are willing to teach classes at MCCS. Please give our classes a try. We are offering Zumba, Kickboxing and HIIT! February is also the month that National PTA celebrates the legacy and work of its founders. For more than 100 years, National Parent Teacher Association (National PTA ) has worked toward bettering the lives of every child in education, health, and safety. Money raised in the past has been spent on a new computer lab, drinking fountain, smart boards, playground equipment, cultural field trips, assemblies, and many other worthwhile causes. 14 February 2014 From the Principal s Office I believe I speak for everyone at school when I say how much we all hope the weather improves and we can avoid any more snow days. It is best educationally for students to regularly attend school and stick to a comfortable routine. These days off school have been difficult on everyone and I want to assure you that the school takes these decisions very seriously and the focus is always student safety. February is an extremely important month academically as the end of the third grading period is the first week of March and ISAT testing also begins the first week of March. If you have any questions for teachers about your student do not hesitate to contact our teachers, they are always here to help. Unfortunately it is the time of year when students get often get sick or may have the flu, please be diligent as parents to keep an eye on your student and we ask that if your student has the flu or flu like symptoms you keep them home from school. I believe our school is much more than a number assigned by the state based on the standardized ISAT test. I also know that the test is very important and I hope that you will work together with us as we prepare for the test. Parents can be very helpful just by doing what they already do everyday like making sure students get rest the night before testing, eating a healthy breakfast the day of testing, and conveying confidence in your child about the testing. Our parents and students are outstanding and all we ask is that you help us maintain that level of excellence. Our district will be participating in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society s Pennies for Patients program from February 3 rd through February 22 nd. During this time frame, students may collect spare change in their own collection boxes. The collection boxes will be turned in on February 22 nd, and the donations will be forwarded to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help fund research. 15 February 2014 Optimist Student of the Month The Optimist Club Student of the Month is Kylie Burke, daughter of Jennifer Burke of Belleville, IL and Aaron Burke of Millstadt, IL. Kylie s extra-curricular activities in school are: Basketball, Math Team, Science Olympiad, Student Council, Beta Club, Recycling and Track. Her interests outside school are Club Volleyball and Millstadt Swim Team. Kylie plans to go to a prestigious college to major in a medical field. It is hard to believe that it s I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. As we move into the last part of the school year, we are gearing up for our last two fundraisers. We are currently in the middle of our TJ s sales and all orders are due to Ms. Drennan by Wednesday, February 5 th. Please make sure the student s name is on the sale sheet along with one check made out to MCS Band. The pick-up will be on Monday, February 24 th in the gym atrium from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. We want to thank you for all of your participation in the Fall/Winter fundraisers. We do want to apologize for any inconveniences with the cookie sales. We are not real sure where the shortage took place, and the weather set back the delivery of this product. Again, we are very sorry! The last part of the year also brings us to our solo/ensemble contest, senior band contest, and field trips for our students. The solo/ensemble contest will be held on February 22 nd in Columbia. The kids are hard at work practicing for their solos and ensembles and we wish them the best of luck at contest! Senior band contest will be held on March 22 nd. There will be more details to follow in the March newsletter. We are also working on field trips for the students. Ms. Drennan will be sending information out on the field trips. There will be a field trip for the 4 th and 5 th graders, and a separate one for the 6 th 8 th graders. MCS 8 th Grade Graduation Picture Day Monday, April 14 th Spring Pictures Monday, March 28 th 8:30 a.m. Individual pictures, Volleyball, Class Pictures Spring Pictures will be taken on Monday, March 28 th beginning at 8:30 a.m. Lifetouch flyers will be distributed to the students the week prior to Picture Day. Pictures should arrive approximately two weeks after the photos are taken. Remind your child to bring the pictures home so they are not left in the school lockers. If you plan to purchase the pictures, please return payment with checks made payable to: Lifetouch. If you are not interested in purchasing the pictures, please return the packet as soon as possible. The Lost and Found is located in the back of the multi-purpose room. Remind your child to look for lost items after they have finished their lunch. It really helps to put names on coats and lunch boxes. A big thank you to everyone who attended Math Night on January 23 rd. We had about 132 students and their families participate in all the activities. Ellie Doerr was the winner of the crayon estimation. The winner of the Goldfish estimation and a jar of 2,125 Goldfish was Karynna Kuhlmann. Emma Hampsten was the winner of a tub of Gummy Bears for most closely guessing their mass in grams. Megan Tucker won a giant jar of skittles for her estimation and the following won a 2-liter bottle of soda; Cori White, Kyra Humbert, Haileigh Buss, and Lukas Pellmann. A special thanks to the following staff members for their help: Ms. Wolfbrandt, Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Kehrer, Mrs. Imm, Mrs. Keinitz, Mrs. Schutenhofer, Mrs. Alt, Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Paisley and Mrs. Schaefer. Science Olympiad News Just a reminder to all the Science Olympiad members and their parents/guardians: Mark your calendars for our Regional Competition on Saturday, February 15 th. The event runs throughout the course of the day. Students will meet at 6:45 a.m. in front of MCS and will return around 6:00 p.m. Students will make calls when we are headed back to Millstadt. Everyone must wear their team t-shirt, socks and closed-toed shoes: NO EXCEPTIONS! Everyone is welcome to attend the tournament at the Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville campus. We will send permission slips and medical release forms home with students and they must be returned to the coaches prior to the tournament. Copies of event times have been sent home with students. Once again the Student Council members will host a dance on Friday, February 7 th. The Student Council will donate $1 to the American Heart Association for everyone who wears red to the dance. Valentine s Day Dance Friday, February 7 th 7:00 9:00 p.m. The Student Council will also begin sales of the Valograms the week of February 10 th 14 th. They will be distributed to students on Friday, February 14 th. The proceeds will help finance the trip to the Student Council Convention in Springfield. 19 February 2014 Choral Music Notes Our choral music groups gave a trio of wonderful concerts before Christmas: two mini-concerts for the student body and one grand concert for parents and friends. All members are to be congratulated on their commitment to excellence. Thank you to all the parents who supplied treats, who helped make and serve punch, or who cleaned up afterwards. Our Santa Cottage fundraiser was a great success. Thank you to chairperson Sue Gundlach and all of the people who helped in any way. We have begun to work on music for the upcoming contests. The Solo and Ensemble Contest will be held at St. Clare School in O'Fallon on Saturday, February 23 rd. The IGSMA District Band and Chorus Contest will be hosted by East Alton Middle School on Saturday, March 23 rd. Both choral groups will perform for this contest. Our Six Flags Festival will be on Saturday, May 11 th. Junior Chorale and Jr. High Chorus will be participating as a combined group. Our Spring Concert is scheduled for Monday, May 13 th. All choral groups will perform. The Fine Arts Fair is Coming Soon This year s fair is scheduled for set up in the gym and multipurpose room on Sunday, March 2 nd. Our program will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 3 th. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. We will need help in taking down on Monday, March 3 th. Both MCS & MPC will be represented in the fair. There will be 2-3 art objects on display from grades K-8 th. This should be a great display of our artistic talents. We will start off the program with the presentation of the ribbon awards winners and a special gift for our BEST OF SHOW. Hope to see you all there!!! Reading News... As the dreary winter months persist, they provide a good time for reading. One way to motivate your child is to make reading attractive something you do together for fun on a regular basis. Make reading a sought-after reward or treat. Reading should be a pleasurable, non-stressful event that brings parent and child, brother and sister, closer. The bond of favorite stories shared in childhood forms the foundation of many individual family traditions. To increase comprehension and retention of assigned reading for school, the KWL method is one organized reading approach that works for some children. This stands for what I KNOW, what I WANT to know, and what I LEARNED. Students fold a piece of paper into three vertical columns. As a pre-reading tool, they list two or three things they already know about the subject in the K column. They then formulate two or three things they want to find out and write them in the W column. This gives them more purpose while they are reading. After reading, they write several items they learned in the L column. If they didn't answer the questions they had before reading, they can use other sources to find their answers if they still want to know. Mark Your March Calendars.
