Adult H.S. Diploma classes offer students 18 years and older the opportunity to earn a high school diploma sanctioned by the Board of Education of Catawba or Alexander Co Center for Education, Taylorsville (828) for more information or to sign up for an orientation. Now offered 100% online with on-campus support! Please call for more information. The High School Equivalency Program (such as GED) focuses on developing the academic skills needed to earn High School Equivalency through an approved exam (ex: the GED exam). Catawba Valley Community College offers classes in a variety of locations and online. Classes are FREE; however, there is a cost for the GED exam at the end. Scholarship funds may be available to those with demonstrated financial need. Minor students (ages 16 & 17) require written permission from a parent/guardian and may also require a superintendent s signature. English as a Second Language (ESL) The ESL program is designed for adults with limited English Skills. Students will learn to speak, read, and write in English. Students will also learn health and safety information, how to deal with cultural differences, U.S. history, basic legal information, and citizenship. Classes are FREE and are available in several locations in Catawba and Alexander counties at various times such as days, nights, and weekends. Adult Basic Education (ABE) The ABE program teaches adults to develop reading, writing, and math skills. Classes are FREE! Compensatory Education (under ABE) The Compensatory Education courses offered at CVCC are a part of Adult Basic Education designed for adults who have intellectual disabilities or who have suffered a brain injury. These classes allow adults to develop reading, writing, and math skills in a way which promotes independent living and helps students transition to employment and college opportunities. Classes are FREE and are available in several locations in Catawba and Alexander counties. Math Sense A six-week, intensive basic math review for students whose placement tests indicate this is the appropriate level to begin the developmental math (DMA) series for curriculum studies. Topics include: operations with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions; data analysis and measurement; statistics and probability; basic geometry; order of operations; and a brief introduction to algebraic expressions and integers. Topics include: vocabulary review, comprehension development, grammar review, basic sentence and paragraph construction, and the writing process. This regulation applies to hotels and motels with continental breakfast areas as well as traditional restaurants and food vendors. A company that is found to be noncompliant may be required to pay a costly fine as experience a loss of points on its sanitation grade. The ServSafe program helps prepare you for the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification exam. Registration includes book and answer sheet. 6 Sewing Module I introduces skills needed to sew upholstery and covers operation of a standard sewing machine. Topics include exposure to hand cutting, machine operation, safety, adjustments and maintenance, threading, and sewing straight lines, corners, curves, and welts. Upon completion, students should be able to operate and maintain a standard sewing machine for upholstery fabric. Module II covers operation of more advanced equipment on complex fabric patterns and designs. Emphasis is placed on double needle, zipper, border, and computerized machines and on matching stripes and patterns. Upon completion, students should be able to operate advanced sewing equipment on complex fabrics. *Take Furniture Fundamentals prior to this course. TBD M/Tu/W/Th 5:30pm - 8:30pm EC 1079 Introduction to Upholstery This course teaches students the fundamentals of upholstering furniture starting with basic seat construction, and introducing safe use of inside and outside upholstery tools, materials and techniques. *Take Furniture Fundamentals prior to this course. TBD M/Tu/W/Th 5:30pm - 8:30pm EC 1079 Spring Up This course covers seat construction for a variety of furniture styles. Topics include webbing, light-weight springs, and eight-way tie construction. TBD M/Tu/W/Th 5:30pm - 8:30pm EC 1079 Inside Upholstery Module I covers basic aspects of inside upholstering tasks for simple furniture styles. Topics include the padding and upholstering, seat decks, inside backs and arms and fitting cushions. Upon completion, students should be able to upholster seat decks, arms, inside backs and arms and fit cushions for comfort. Module II covers advanced inside upholstering tasks for chairs, love seats, and sofas. Emphasis is placed on channeling and tufting for all styles and types. Upon completion, students should be able to complete inside upholstering of complex styles of furniture and be comfortable working with a variety of fabrics and patterns. *Take Introduction to Upholstery prior to this course. Topics include double covering and proper use of padding on the outside of chairs, love seats, and sofas. Upon completion, students should be able to cover and pad the outside of chairs, love seats, and sofas. Module II covers application of outside coverings to frames using more complex fabric and decoration. Emphasis is placed on applying skirts and decorative trim, including matching of stripes. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in covering furniture outside and applying decorative trim and matching of stripes. *Take Introduction to Upholstery prior to this course. Mechatronics combines the disciplines of mechanics, fluid power, electricity, and electronic controls (PLCs). CVCC s Continuing Education Mechatronics program equips students with practical knowledge and hands-on skills required to install, repair, and maintain the complex machines used in advanced manufacturing. Mechatronics Fundamentals Certificate $180 tuition + $380 materials Consists of three modules that cover Industrial Mechanics, Fluid Power, and Industrial Electricity. Students may enroll in the entire 144 hour program or may, alternatively, enroll in the individual modules. Students who successfully complete this program will earn a CVCC certificate and will also have an opportunity to earn a 3rd party nationally recognized credential. Aug Feb. 25 Tu/Th 1pm-4pm Mechatronics Controls Certificate $180 tuition + $400 materials The Mechatronics Controls Certificate program consists of three modules that cover Motor Controls, PLCs, and Mechatronic Systems. Students who successfully complete this program will earn a CVCC certificate and will also have an opportunity to earn a 3rd party nationally recognized credential. Pre-requisite: Mechatronics Fundamentals or demonstrated knowledge. Aug Feb. 29 M/W 1pm-4pm Six Sigma Green Belt $1175 This course includes 24 classroom hours of interactive and dynamic online instruction. Participants will learn the tools needed to define, measure, analyze, improve and control a Six Sigma project. Upon successful completion of the course and final exam, students will receive a CVCC Six Sigma Green Belt Certification. June 3 - July 15 W 8am Noon Six Sigma Black Belt $2750 Provides 40 hours of classroom instruction of interactive and dynamic online instruction. The course prepares you to become an effective Six Sigma Project Leader. It also prepares you to take the ASQ Six Sigma Black Belt Certification exam. The course itself includes training in Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Control Charts, Introduction to Inferential Statistics, use of Minitab software, Introduction to Lean Principles, and many other areas of training. Upon successful completion of the course and final exam, students will receive a CVCC Six Sigma Black Belt Certification. July 6 - Sept. 21 M 8am Noon ISO/TS Internal Auditor Training $600 This course is designed to help anyone responsible for management systems auditing to become a more proficient professional. It will cover a number of areas including: audit preparation, audit performance, audit reporting, auditing tools, and many other components of the process. Students will be required to complete a criminal background check including sex offender and public protection registry covering a minimum of seven years. In addition, some clinical facilities require students to submit to a drug screening. Must be 17 years old by class end date to register. After successful completion of the class/lab portion, students will be assigned to a 12 hour (1 time) clinical rotation.
