2 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS High School Graduation Diploma or Mature Student Status (18 years of age and academic achievement test passed). Passing score on the trios entrance examination Demonstrated fluency in English (oral and written) Admissions Interview to determine suitability for a career as a Medical Office Assistant Accreditation Policy: Like all post-secondary institutions in Ontario, trios College reserves the right to accept or deny advanced standing into its programs. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Diploma trios diplomas will be granted only to students who successfully complete all courses in the program with a passing grade of 60% (or a grade of complete where applicable). As well, students must meet the minimum Standards of Satisfactory Scholastic Progress as set out in our Student Handbook. For programs that include an internship, all internship hours must be completed and a final grade of Pass must be achieved for the internship. Diploma with Honours Where an overall average of 90% is maintained and a student meets all standards related to contact hours, the student is eligible for "Honours" status upon graduation and such status will be recorded on his/her Diploma and Official Transcript. Diploma with Distinction Where an overall average of 80% is maintained and a student meets all standards related to contact hours, the student is eligible for "Distinction" status upon graduation and such status will be recorded on his/her Diploma and Official Transcript. Check out our Alumni link on our website for current Alumni Benefits information: PROGRAM OVERVIEW Because success in today's healthcare world depends on having well trained employees who can multi-task to meet a variety of challenges, the trios Medical Office Assistant program has been designed to provide students with all of the administrative and clinical knowledge and skills required for employment as a Medical Office Assistant. During the program students learn to understand and use medical language; perform Doctors general office procedures, type medical records, reports, case histories, correspondence and machine dictation; schedule and confirm medical appointments; receive and communicate messages for doctors and patients; interview patients to complete forms, documents and case histories; initiate and maintain confidential medical files and records; prepare financial statements and handle billing procedures including medical billing, insurance, and other claim forms; promote safety and work in a safe manner; order supplies and maintain inventory; plan and initiate procedural set ups including those required for patient preparation and maintenance for supplies and equipment; perform simple diagnostic procedures such as vital signs; and collect patient specimens as required. Strong focus is given to communication skills, Microsoft Office Applications, Accounting applications, the ability to multi task and prioritize, organizational and detail skills, professional telephone manner, confidentiality, interpersonal skills and being a team player. 3 CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Medical Office Assistants work in doctors offices, hospitals, medical clinics, pharmaceutical companies, government health agencies and a variety of other medical office settings. They are integral members of the health care delivery team and perform many administrative and some basic clinical procedures. Typical Job Titles include Medical Office Assistant, Medical Secretary, Medical Billing Clerk, Medical Billing Secretary, Medical Office Administrator, Medical Receptionist, Clinical Assistant, Ward Secretary and Booking Clerk. Note: Some career and education options may require advanced degrees, further training or experience. CAREER MANAGEMENT Our Career Management program educates students in the steps necessary to achieve career fulfillment as a result of a successful job search. These steps include self-assessment and promotion by creating a skills inventory ; marketing strategies and techniques; necessary considerations before, during and after an interview; tips on what to do after the job offer including evaluating the offer; and suggestions on how to attain and maintain job success. Students are also taught how to create effective job search tools including resumes, cover letters and professional portfolios. Career Management enables students to apply the most current and proven strategies available to achieve employment in the career of their choice. MICROSOFT WORD This Microsoft Office Word course is designed so that students can build and validate the skills businesses need to succeed in today's information economy. It also provides students with the skills and knowledge they need to use Microsoft Office Word effectively in all aspects of their personal and professional lives. Students learn how to create, edit, format and print documents, using various styles and techniques. MICROSOFT EXCEL In this Microsoft Office Excel course students build and validate the skills businesses need to succeed in today's information economy. The course provides students with the skills and knowledge they need to use Microsoft Office Excel effectively in all aspects of their personal and professional lives. Areas explored include the use of mathematical operations, functions and formulas; the various tools and features that assist with data analysis; and basic spreadsheet techniques. MICROSOFT OUTLOOK Microsoft Outlook has become the corporate standard electronic personal organizer, and in this course students learn its many functions besides . Areas covered include composing and sending , scheduling appointments and managing contact information. MICROSOFT POWERPOINT In this course students learn the fundamentals needed to create and modify basic presentations by using Microsoft Office PowerPoint. Students explore the PowerPoint environment and create a presentation. In so doing they learn to format text on slides to enhance clarity, and to boost the visual appeal by adding graphical objects to a presentation. In addition, students explore how to add tables and charts to a presentation to present data in a structured form, and how to finalize a presentation for delivery MOA
4 BUSINESS COMMUNICATION This course helps students develop the communication skills needed to function in the modern business setting. The course starts with a review of grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation as they apply to business communication. Students explore the various formats for written and verbal business communication. In addition, they complete various exercises with the emphasis on improving their communication skills and apply them to the writing of letters, memoranda, and reports. Students also complete public speaking exercises to enhance verbal and non-verbal skills. INTRODUCTION TO ACCOUNTING (Using Sage 50 formerly Simply Accounting) In this course students are introduced to accounting concepts and procedures. Students learn about debits and credits and how to analyze and record business transactions in both a manual and computerized accounting system (Sage 50 formerly Simply Accounting). In addition, students explore banking procedures and control of cash. INTERMEDIATE ACCOUNTING (Using QuickBooks) This course is designed to introduce students to accounting topics relating to the end of the accounting cycle and merchandising. Students will also be introduced to procedures for dealing with inventory. Material will be presented using both manual and computerized (Quickbooks) accounting systems. digestive, urinary, nervous, endocrine and reproductive). PATHOLOGY AND PHARMACOLOGY In this course, students will be introduced to pharmacology, and will learn about the different classes of drugs and their use in the treatment of a range of medical conditions. Diseases and symptoms of disorders relating to the major body systems will be explained throughout the course. Routes of drug administration and drug effects will also be discussed. After completing the course, students should be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of common diseases and the classes of drugs prescribed to treat them. HEALTHCARE FUNDAMENTALS This course is designed to introduce students to the Medical Office Assisting profession. Students will learn about the Canadian healthcare system in general including facilities, professionals, and legal and ethical considerations of the field. The course will also look at the roles and responsibilities of the MOA within the healthcare system. INTRODUCTION TO MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION This course introduces students to the process of transcribing medical dictation. Students will use transcription equipment to create a variety of clinical documents. Challenges to dictation will also be introduced including accents, background noises, muffled speaking, etc. Students are also expected to develop excellent proofreading skills. ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY AND TERMINOLOGY Students will be introduced to the foundations of the language of medicine and will develop medical vocabulary through the study of the structures, functions and common disorders of the body systems. Topics include medical terminology and a general overview of the structures of the human body, including common pathologic conditions and diseases for each major body system (skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, lymphatic, immune, respiratory, CUSTOMER SERVICE AND PRACTICE ADMINISTRATION Students will be introduced to the administrative components of the healthcare environment. Office communications and customer service skills will be developed, as well as skills in scheduling and preparing patient records. Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge of billing procedures for both OHIP, self-payers, and thirdparty payers. Computer application skills are developed through the use of a practice management suite with electronic medical records (EMR) MOA
5 MEDICAL OFFICE ASSISTANT CLINICAL PROCEDURES In this course, students will learn the Medical Office Assistant s role in clinical procedures commonly performed in a medical office. Students will develop clinical skills through demonstrations and labs, including a one-day office skills and customer service hands-on workshop. Areas of focus include infection control and workplace safety (WHMIS), prescription handling, diagnostic testing, communication & customer service, and assisting with the patient exam. Note: In order to continuously improve our programs, trios College reserves the right to modify programs at any time. Program delivery order may vary depending on program start date. Not all programs are available at all trios College locations. The program may have additional reading weeks, depending upon start date. We recommend a typing speed of 55 WPM be achieved by graduation. CPR AND FIRST AID This course provides participants with comprehensive First Aid and CPR Level C training techniques and knowledge to respond to emergencies in the home or workplace. Several topics are covered from basic first aid such as cardiovascular and breathing emergencies, bone and joint injuries and severe bleeding. MOA PRACTICAL SKILLS WORKSHOP This is an accelerated workshop focused on helping students take what they know today to the next level. The workshop will help students build the crucial skills that employers are looking for in ideal candidates. The workshop is facilitated by professionals from Medical Management Solutions (MMS), who work directly with doctors to set up medical clinics and improve their office management & HR practices. The MMS facilitators have a wealth of industry-relevant experience, and bring a unique perspective of the medical workplace to share with trios MOA students. ANATOMY LAB WORKSHOP The Anatomy Lab Workshop offered by the University of Guelph allows trios students to explore body systems in an interactive tour guided by advanced Anatomy students. trios students are able to expand their anatomical knowledge through hands-on experience tour participants handle organ specimens, bones, and more MOA
