1 Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) A certified clinical medical assistant is an unlicensed multi-skilled healthcare practitioner competent in a variety of clinical and laboratory procedures and many administrative roles. Medical assistants perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep physician, podiatry, chiropractic and other health practitioner offices running smoothly. Medical assisting is projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations. Job prospects are best for medical assistants with formal training and certification. Most employers require 18 years or older and a high school diploma or GED. The program requires study time outside of class and includes college-level texts. All tests must be passed prior to the start of clinical training. Clinical requires written documentation of MMR and Varicella immunity, a negative TB test or chest x-ray within the last 12 months and Hepatitis B immunity or waiver. Clinical sites may require criminal background checks and drug screenings at an additional cost. Applications are required. Call for information. 3 Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) CNAs perform routine tasks under the supervision of nursing and medical staff. Duties include answering patients call lights, serving meals, making beds, and helping patients eat, dress and bathe. CNAs work day, evening and weekend shifts in hospitals and long-term care facilities. Minimum 16 years of age or older. Most employers require 18 years or older and a high school diploma or GED. The program requires study time outside of class and includes college-level texts. All tests must be passed prior to the start of clinical training. Clinical requires written documentation of MMR and Varicella immunity, a negative TB test or chest x-ray within the last 12 months and Hepatitis B immunity or waiver. A Geriatric Nursing Assistant certification exam will be administered to all students after successful completion of the clinical (cost included in course cost). Applicants must pass a reading placement test prior to enrolling in the program. The Maryland Board of Nursing requires fingerprinting and background checks for certification. AHE046 CPR Healthcare Provider/BLS or Card AHE257 CNA Preparation AHE042 Certified Nursing Assistant Training Part 1 (Theory) AHE580 Certified Nursing Assistant Training Part 2 (Clinical) AHE455 GNA Skills Lab 138 hours $1,600 Successful completion of this training leads to a CNA license from the Maryland Board of Nursing. 4 Dental Assistant Dental assistants play a vital role in dental offices helping dentists and dental hygienists provide services to patients. Duties may include maintaining medical records, assisting with collection of patient information, instrument and patient preparation, taking and developing x-rays, and casting impressions. Hours are generally standard daytime with some evening and weekend flexibility depending on the facility. For a dental assistant to operate dental x-ray equipment and take x-rays in Maryland, they must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent and pass the Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam. Courses are approved by the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners. Training includes practice using dental software in a computer lab. AHE196 Professional Preparation in Healthcare Employment of dental assistants is expected to grow by 31 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations. Ongoing research linking oral health and general health will continue to increase the demand for preventive dental services. As dental practices grow, more dental assistants will be needed. Bureau of Labor Statistics AHE453 Introduction to Dental Assisting AHE067 Oral Radiography XXZ132 Oral Radiography Clinical (required for those not currently employed in a dental practice) 73 hours $1,733 (includes texts) Students who successfully complete Oral Radiography will be eligible to take the Radiation Health and Safety examination through the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). This certification is required in Maryland for anyone who takes dental x-rays. 5 Dental Front Office Administrator Administrative dental assistants work in dental offices greeting patients, and handling scheduling, insurance and patient billing. Other duties may include medical records management and accounts receivable and reimbursement management. Hours are generally standard daytime with some evening and weekend flexibility depending on the facility. Training includes practice using dental software in a computer lab. 6 EKG Technician EKG technicians are responsible for performing diagnostic tests to assess the heart s rate and rhythm. They may work in clinical laboratory settings, hospitals or physicians offices. EKG technicians may set up and administer EKGs, stress tests, and Holter monitors. Hours may span days, evenings and weekends depending on the facility. Applicants for the Certified Cardiographic Technician Examination must have a high school diploma or equivalent and successfully complete this training. Students will perform EKGs on each other. Training also includes practice with Holter monitors and stress tests. AHE149 Medical Terminology for Health Careers (online course also accepted) AHE150 Anatomy & Physiology for Health Careers AHE196 Professional Preparation in Healthcare AHE253 EKG Technician Training 60 hours $629 Successful completion of this training prepares students to sit for the Certified Cardiographic Technician Examination administered by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI). 7 Medical Biller Medical billers use a multi-step process that begins with generating an insurance claim and continues through a series of collection and payment related activities. They must be familiar with the claim requirements for a variety of insurance companies including government payors. Medical billers may be responsible for one or more steps in the billing process. Hours are generally day time with some evening and weekend flexibility required depending on the facility. Training includes practice using medical billing software in a computer lab. 8 Medical Coder Medical coders work as part of a healthcare team to ensure correct recording of medical procedures for billing and insurance purposes. Medical coders may work in physicians offices, hospitals, insurance companies or as independent contractors. Future federal government changes impacting this field will require a well-trained workforce. To receive CPC-A (Certified Professional Coder-Apprentice) status, students must successfully complete this training, which includes AAPC s national CPC (Certified Professional Coder) exam. The certification exam is five hours long and administered at the conclusion of class. Course to Complete AHE149 Medical Terminology for Health Careers AHE197 Medical Coding for the Physician s Office - AAPC 100 hours Before when I was doing medical billing, my position was a charge poster somebody else gave me the codes and I entered them. Now I m the person who looks at the documentation from the physicians and I determine the code. Linda Bresnock Certified Professional Coder $1,875 (includes all texts, materials and certification test) Upon successful completion of this training and AAPC s national CPC (Certified Professional Coder) exam, students will receive CPC-A (Certified Professional Coder Apprentice) status. To remove apprentice designation, verification of 2 years of on-the-job experience or 80 hours of education and 1 year of on-the-job experience must be submitted to the AAPC. AHE150 Anatomy and Physiology for Health Careers AHE199 Medical Billing for the Physician s Office $13 $21/hr. 9 Medical Transcription Editor Medical transcriptionists transcribe medical dictation and edit transcription created by voicerecognition software. They may work in hospitals, physicians offices, transcription service offices, clinics and laboratories. They also may telecommute from a home-based office. This is online training offered in partnership with Career Step. XXZ210 Medical Transcription Editor 640 hours $2,495 $16 $18/hr. 10 Pharmacy Technician Pharmacy technicians work in pharmacy settings in clinics, retail locations, hospitals and sometimes in physicians offices. Their primary responsibility is to assist the pharmacist in the preparation and packaging of prescription drugs. Hours may span day, evening, night and weekend shifts depending on the facility. The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) and the Exam for Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) both require a high school diploma or equivalent. The ExCPT also requires candidates to be at least 18 years of age. Must be a registered pharmacy technician to work in the State of Maryland Training includes a virtual component in a computer lab and practical experience in a mock pharmacy. AHE712 Pharmacy Technician Training 99 hours $1,175 This course prepares students to sit for one of the national pharmacy technician certification exams the PTCE offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board and the ExCPT offered by the National Healthcareer Association. Individuals who pass either exam are given the designation of CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician). 11 Phlebotomy Technician Phlebotomy technicians work in clinical laboratory settings, hospitals and sometimes physicians offices. Their primary responsibility is to collect blood specimens as ordered by the physician. Hours may span day, evening, night and weekend shifts depending on the facility. There are no licensing or certification requirements for phlebotomy technicians in Maryland; however, most employers prefer certification. To be eligible for the national Phlebotomy Technician certification exam (PBT), students must have a high school diploma or equivalent and complete an acceptable two-part structured phlebotomy training program. Students will practice drawing blood on each other. Background checks, drug screening and uniform required for clinical portion of course. AHE196 Professional Preparation in Healthcare AHE046 CPR Healthcare Provider/BLS or Current BLS Card I always wanted to work in the medical field, and when given the opportunity to change careers, I took the phlebotomy classes at Carroll Community College. I am now employed as an inpatient phlebotomist at Carroll Hospital Center and love my job. 12 Physical and Occupational Therapy Aide Physical and occupational therapy aides work in physical or occupational therapy practices, hospitals, nursing care facilities, physicians offices, home healthcare settings and outpatient care centers. Their work includes setting up treatments to be applied by the therapist, assisting in patient transfers, helping with follow-up of routine exercises, managing and implementing programs initiated by a therapist, supervising patient home programs prescribed by a therapist, handling front-office duties and maintaining equipment. High school diploma or equivalent. This course includes hands-on training with equipment used in physical therapy. 13 Polysomnographic Technologist (Sleep Technologist) Sleep technologists assist in the evaluation and follow-up care of patients with sleep disorders. They may work in sleep centers, laboratories for sleep related breathing disorders, a client s home environment and non-facility based settings under the direction of a sleep specialist. Most employers require 18 years of age or older. This position may require working evening and night hours. Training is offered in partnership with the Community College of Baltimore County and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Graduates will be eligible to take national board exams and practice in the field.
