2 CHILD DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE (CDA 2.0) Child Development Associates (CDAs) are skilled caregivers with demonstrated ability to work with newborn through five-year-old children, infant and toddler or preschool children and their families. Some are center-based caregivers, while others are family day care providers. If you are interested in becoming a CDA, Eastern Iowa Community Colleges can provide you with the required training. For more information, please contact Gale Roeder, Associate Director, Family & Consumer Sciences, Continuing Education, 306 West River Drive, Davenport, IA or call (563) or toll-free Essentials 2.0 for Child Development Associates: Working With Young Children (approximately $66) and CDA Assessment Packet ($34) are the textbooks used for all components of the CDA program. College Credit is available through an articulation agreement with Scott Community College, Clinton Community College and Muscatine Community College. Students who have successfully completed the Child Development Associate Credential by completing their course work through the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges, Continuing Education Division, successfully completed the portfolio, work experience and Credentialing Examination may be eligible to receive up to 17 hours of college credit towards a degree at Scott Community College, Clinton Community College or Muscatine Community College. COMPLETE PROGRAM LISTING A Child Development Associate (CDA) is a person who is able to meet the specific needs of children and who, with parents and other adults, works to nurture children s physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth in a child development framework. - Council for Professional Recognition Eastern Iowa Community College s CDA program is for experienced child caregivers or those who want to enter the field. The program includes 120 hours of class work plus 480 hours of field experience, all designed to give you the background to provide quality, professional child care. When you complete the program, you will be eligible to take the CDA national credentialing assessment. Eligibility: You must be at least 18 years old and have earned your high school diploma or GED. CDA Assessment Packet: $34 Textbook: Essentials for Child Development Associates $66 ESSENTIALS UNIT I/ CDA CONTENT AREA 6 Introduction to the Early Childhood Profession Early childhood development is an emerging profession. Find out if you have what it takes to be part of it. Assess your aptitudes and interests and the career opportunities the early childhood profession provides. 10 hours. 1.0 CEUs for child care providers. Class Fee: $29 ESSENTIALS UNIT II/ CDA CONTENT AREA 7 & 8 Observing and Recording Child Growth and Development Class work covers basic development concepts, normal developmental characteristics of children, appropriate activities and expectations for children at various ages, observation and recording children s behavior. 20 hours. 2.0 CEUs for child care providers. ESSENTIALS UNIT III/ CDA CONTENT AREA 1 Safe and Healthy Environment It is important to establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment for children in their early years. This class will show you how. 20 hours. 2.0 CEUs for child care providers. ESSENTIALS UNIT IV/ CDA CONTENT AREA 3 Social and Emotional Development Acquire the knowledge and skills to support social and emotional development and provide positive guidance to children. 20 hours. 2.0 CEUs for child care providers. ESSENTIALS UNIT V/ CDA CONTENT AREA 2 Advancing Physical and Intellectual Competence This class will help you acquire the knowledge and skills you need to advance the physical, cognitive, communicative and creative competence of young children. 20 hours. 2.0 CEUs for child care providers. ESSENTIALS UNIT VI/ CDA CONTENT AREA 4 Establish Productive Relationships with Families Acquire the knowledge and skills you need to establish positive and productive relationships with families of program participants. 20 hours. 2.0 CEUs for child care providers September January 2016

3 ESSENTIALS UNIT VII/ CDA CONTENT AREA 5 Program Management This class will teach you how to maintain an effective, well-run, purposeful program which is responsive to participant needs. 20 hours. 2.0 CEUs for child care providers. ESSENTIALS UNIT VIII CDA Assessment Preparation Preparation for final assessment: parent questionnaires, resource files, personal interview with a council representative and review of materials for final assessment. 10 hours. 1.0 CEUs for child care providers. Class Fee: $29 CDA CREDENTIALING ASSESSMENT After you have completed the CDA training program, you are eligible to take the CDA national credentialing assessment, given by the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition. The fee for the assessment is $485. (Assistance for this fee may be available) For more information, contact: Gale Roeder, Associate Director Family and Consumer Sciences, Continuing Education 306 West River Drive, Davenport, Iowa (563) or toll-free Iowa Healthy Kids Act The Healthy Kids Act passed by the Iowa legislators during the 2008 session has four parts including: nutrition, dietetics, physical activity and CPR for all public and private school students. Every student by the end of grade twelve shall complete certification course for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR.) The administrator of a school may waive this requirement if the student is not physically able to successfully complete the training. It includes parent questionnaires, resource files, and a personal interview with a council representative. Approved for 1.0 CEU for Child Care Providers. (Required text: Essentials 2.0 for Child Development Associates: Working With Young Children, Approx. $66) Cost: $29 Thursdays, October 15 November 5, :30-9:00PM # XCCCD-2040-SGR01 CHILD ABUSE MANDATORY REPORTER This class will inform mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse and/or neglect of their role and responsibilities. It includes an explanation of legal issues and Iowa law regarding child abuse and neglect. You will be introduced to identification factors that indicate child abuse may have occurred. Reporting procedures - how, where and when to report suspected child abuse - will be included. Approved for 0.2 CEUs for Child Care Providers. It includes an explanation of legal issues and Iowa law regarding child abuse and neglect. You will be introduced to identification factors that indicate child abuse may have occurred. Reporting procedures--how, where and when to report suspected child abuse--will be included. This is an Iowa approved curriculum. This class does not meet the requirements for healthcare, school and dental personnel. Class materials will be sent after payment is received. Approved for 0.24 CEUs for Child Care Providers. Cost: $28 # XCCCE-0005-SGR01 Available 7/1/15-6/30/16 MEDIASITE CLASSES CHILD ABUSE MANDATORY REPORTER / MEDIASITE This Mediasite class will inform mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse and/or neglect of their role and responsibilities. It includes an explanation of legal issues and Iowa law regarding child abuse and neglect. You will be introduced to identification factors that indicate child abuse may have occurred. Reporting procedures how, where and when to report suspected child abuse will be included. Approved for 0.2 CEUs for Child Care Providers. After your registration is complete, a link will be e mailed to you to view the presentation through any web browser. 5 BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS / MEDIASITE Mediasite is a powerful new technology for sharing knowledge online. An instructor presents while the technology synchronizes what you say with your visual aids and instantly streams both over the internet. Participants will learn the occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens standard (OSHA 29 CFR Part ). Including the different types of bloodborne pathogens, their transmission, proper handling of body fluids, and the available vaccines and prophylactic drugs. After your registration is complete, a link will be ed to you to watch your presentation through any web browser. Cost: $20 Objectives: 1. Identify the various bloodborne pathogens. 2. Identify methods of preventing or reducing exposure. 3. Review the CDC s guidelines for universal precautions. 4. Discuss Hepatitis B and HIV testing procedures and vaccine. # XHECP-0119-SDH01 Available 7/1/15-6/30/16 CHILD CARE 2015 Don t Let It Fade Away Many great classes simply fade away because everyone waited until the last minute to register. Three business days in advance of the start date - a decision has to be made on whether or not a class will run. If too few people have registered up to that point, then the class will be canceled. Refunds and substitutions If your plans change, you may cancel your registration up to three business days (Monday - Friday) prior to the start of the program and receive a full refund. After that, no refunds will be issued. Please note that if you don t cancel and don t attend, you are still responsible for payment. Class Cancellation - Three business days (Monday - Friday) prior to the activity, a decision will be made by the college administration to run or cancel the program based on the number of individuals who have enrolled and paid. Each college reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment. If a class is cancelled, you will receive a full refund.
