1 American Heart Association American Heart Association (AHA) courses offer a number of training options. Please read the following course descriptions carefully to determine which course is the right one for you. The card awarded will reflect the type of course completed with a recommended renewal date of two years. Textbooks may be purchased at the CSM College Store where you are attending the AHA course and should be read prior to attending the course. (Any fees for AHA courses do not represent revenue to the American Heart Association.) American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers HTH-6650 (0.7 CEUs) Prerequisite: none Healthcare providers and professionals whose jobs require CPR as a condition of employment are encouraged to attend. Relief of foreign body airway obstruction, rescue breathing, CPR for victims of all ages, and the use of the bag valve mask and automated external defibrillator (AED) will be practiced. The signs of stroke, heart attack, and the prevention of SIDS and childhood injuries will be discussed. Participants successfully completing a written exam and a skills demonstration will earn an AHA card that is current for two years. Textbook required. Tuition: $68.00 Fees: $ S 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. 01/15/11-01/15/11 TBA-PRIN CPR and First Aid American Red Cross Adult/Child/Infant CPR and Basic First Aid HTH-6560 (0.8 CEUs) Prerequisite: none This American Red Cross course will train people in CPR for the infant, child, and adult. Management of airway obstructions and rescue breathing will be covered. Participants successfully completing the course will earn an American Red Cross CPR card that is good for one year and a first aid basic card that is valid for three years. This course meets the Maryland Child Care Administration's CPR training requirements for child care facilities open to children of all ages. Textbook required. Preparing the patient for treatment and providing patient education are described. Occupational safety considerations, standard precautions, infection control, and sterilization and disinfection are taught and demonstrated. Fourteen hours of clinical observation in participating dental offices will be arranged and must be completed outside of regularly scheduled classroom sessions. Prior to entering clinical, students are required to submit a form signed by a physician or nurse documenting freedom from tuberculosis. Textbook required. 2 Oral Radiography HTH-7380 (4.1 CEUs) Prerequisite: Before clinical experiences at area medical institutions, students may be required to provide proof of current health insurance and/or a negative drug screen, and may be required to have a criminal background check at their own expense. Dental assistants will be trained to prepare patients, safely obtain radiographic dental images, and process and mount films. Stress is placed on infection control and safety. Skills will be refined in the dental office where the student is employed. Topics include anatomical landmarks, types of radiographic surveys, radiographic techniques, biologic effects, and types of radiographic and film composition and processing. This course prepares students to take the Dental Assisting National Board Dental Radiation Health and Safety Certification Exam. Applicants must be 18 years of age, currently employed with a dentist willing to supervise clinical experience, have three months work experience in a dental office, and possess a high school diploma or GED. Prior to entering clinical, students are required to submit a form signed by a physician or nurse documenting freedom from tuberculosis. Textbook required. This course is designed to expand the abilities of multi-skilled workers in hospitals, nursing homes, and healthcare facilities. Textbook required. Terminology for basic medical disciplines as well as medical specialties will be included. A variety of commonly used words or phrases for which there are medical terms will be presented. The unit on body disease sciences introduces the body's biological structure and function and basic system identification. Beyond the identification of medical terms, pronunciation, spelling, and abbreviations will be included. Each unit is enhanced and reinforced with several review definition exercises and puzzles.
