2 Veteran s Day November 11, 2009 Thank you Veterans for your service to this country. 1st Annual Isabella County Memory Walk On September 26, 2009 the 1st Annual Isabella County Memory Walk was held at Island Park in Mt. Pleasant, MI. The facility held a hot dog fundraiser and donated all of the money to the walk. Along with individual donations the facility raised a total of $685.00!!! A group of students from the CMU class of Parent-Child relations created eight totes for the Memory Care Unit. The goal of the totes are to promote interaction and communication. Each tote includes at least four activities and a music CD. Pictured Left to Right: Maureen Harke, Volunteer, Dr. Pam Sarigiani, Ph.D, and Audrey Rock, Student, present the totes to the residents and staff. Family members or caregivers are welcome to contact the Activity Department if you would like to use a tote during your visit with your loved one. Mardi Gras Parade On September 18th there was an outing to the Mardi Gras parade and festivities in downtown Mt. Pleasant. Thank you to Ralph and Linda Ingram for letting us use the beautiful vehicles in the parade! Two residents rode in classic cars during the parade. Thank you to Tonya Bondale and Ralph Ingram for driving the cars. One vehicle displayed a banner for the Isabella County Medical Care Facility, and the other vehicle displayed a banner for the Isabella County Adult Day Program. The outing was lots of fun and the weather was beautiful! Page 2
3 It has been very busy here the past few months with the kitchen project, and with follow up from the annual state survey which was the end of September. In follow up to our corrective action from the annual state survey, we have asked many of you to sign new forms, and we are very grateful to you for your cooperation. We strive to follow all of the laws and rules and we want to honor all of the resident s preferences by having the appropriate person sign the documents. Again, thank you. As you know, the facility is implementing an electronic medical record. This is a big undertaking and is very positive as it allows greater access to the medical record and improved accuracy. You may have noticed the oak cabinets that have been installed in the hallways. A laptop computer is inside the oak cabinets which will be used by the nursing assistant for charting. All of the staff are receiving education for using the computers so they will be very comfortable with the system. A laptop will also be on the medication cart for the licensed staff to use during medication pass. The computers have already been implemented on first floor and everything is going well. Everyone is doing such an excellent job and I am so very proud of their efforts to achieve success in computerized charting within a very short period of time. We are still hoping to achieve our goal of opening our new kitchen in January 2010, but there is a great deal of work to be done in the meantime. We have received most of the large kitchen equipment and we will soon be ordering the smaller items such as plates, cups, silverware, and utensils. The carpeting in the third floor east dining room will be removed and replaced with wood-like appearing flooring. The carpeting has been very difficult to keep clean in that area. The dining rooms will also receive a fresh coat of paint. The landscaping is being completed at this time and it should look beautiful next spring and summer. The Activity Department has some special holiday activities planned as we try to make the holidays very special for our residents, but it is the time spent with family and friends that make the holidays complete and extra special. As we move into the holidays, I would like to wish each and every one of you a wonderful, happy holiday season and a happy new year. As always, if you have any comments or concerns, please let me know. Tanny Baumann Administrator (989) November/December 2009 Page 3
