1 Rodgers Forge Community Newsletter P.O. BOX 571 Riderwood, MD Vol. 34, No. 04 Baltimore, Maryland Baltimore County Police Chief James Johnson addressed the Board and guests at our March meeting and provided news and updates about how technology has changed the way officers perform their duties. I did not know that the Baltimore County Police Department is the 20th largest in the nation. Some approximate statistics are: a working budget of $200 million, 2000 police officers and 1000 staff workers. Working knowledge of technological devices is increasingly necessary for new and existing officers. In addition to office technology, the devices in the field have changed as well. An officer may read and get information on the license plates of all cars surrounding a vehicle and they have a virtual office that allows them to download photographs and other information. County Police will be installing more speed cameras in school zones in an effort to change the speeding behavior of motorists. Chief Johnson indicated increasing the amount of cameras was not to make more money, but to change behavior. To achieve this, there will be portable cameras that can be moved to various locations. There will be an announcement when a camera will be moved to a certain location. A new Baltimore County Police tool is iwatch. iwatch is a community awareness program encouraging citizens to be vigilant and help communities stay safe. You can submit an anonymous tip or subscribe for crime alerts. Chief Johnson also mentioned being able to view video footage of suspects that may not be available in its entirety on news reports. Visit within the Baltimore County website to get all the information on this new program. I enjoyed Chief Johnson s useful information and want to thank our hard working volunteers participating in Citizens on Patrol and our Crime and Safety committee for organizing his visit. Rodgers Forge resident, Will Morton addressed the President s Message RFC board with his research into convincing Baltimore County to investigate a need for traffic calming on his street. Will has initiated the process and I applaud his efforts to help keep drivers and pedestrians safe. Towson University student, and vice president of Proud Athletes Who Serve (PAWS), Kristina Swan, addressed the board with a generous proposal. Ms. Swan is a member of the women s volleyball team and a senior at TU. For the past two years, PAWS has had a spring talent show fundraiser. Previously, the proceeds have gone to the athletic department. This year, PAWS, requested the proceeds go to the Rodgers Forge Community in a way that promotes the athletic activity of our children. I am appreciative of Ms. Swan taking the time to address the community and work on making their idea happen. I look forward to hearing about PAWS efforts to support our community. Our April meeting is looking like it will be just as informative and exciting! We are scheduled to have guest speaker Nancy Surosky, Special Assistant to County Executive Kamenetz, tell us about her role in community outreach on behalf of the County Executive. This is a good opportunity to address concerns before they become problems, or to let the County Executive s office know of existing problems. Also scheduled to address the attendees, is County Councilman Marks. Our county councilman is interested in a conversation on traffic calming, pedestrian safety, and our efforts to initiate a Safe Routes To School Program. As our district includes Perry Hall, I welcomed guest speaker Sara Jean Sayles, a Perry Hall parent, to address the board on her efforts investigating the magnet school program admission process. Ms. Sayles will be sharing her experiences with this Baltimore County Board of Education process. Please join us Wednesday, April 13th in the Rodgers Forge Cafeteria at 7 pm.
