Sarah McLawhon Strategic Alliances intern, Spring 2014 Undergraduate health promotion and business administration student, East Carolina University I enjoyed combining both areas of my academic studies while interning at Prevention Partners. As a full time intern, I got to spend time working on a Strategic Plan Toolbox for external partners, creating graphs for grants, and participating in the organization s Wellness Committee. While interning here I got to see the positive health and business impacts a healthy environment has on organizations. WorkHealthy America is making great strides in company wellness policies, and it was remarkable to see how the product works and to listen to stories of those positively affected by it. It was also wonderful to witness that Prevention Partners not only talks the talk, but walks the walk! It's amazing to see how health and business really coincide! Leah Gardner Strategic Alliances intern, Spring 2014 Graduate health policy & management student, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Gillings School of Global Public Health Throughout my semester at Prevention Partners, I worked with another intern to create and edit numerous resources for the WorkHealthy America SM tool. I am passionate about helping individuals lead healthier lifestyles, and Prevention Partners has incredible programs to help people do so. Not only do they have great products which help hospitals, businesses, and schools to create healthier environments, they also provide their employees with the same environment. Prevention Partners is an incredible model for a healthy workplace and was a great internship experience. Michelle Bandklayder Product Support intern for Zone Health and WorkHealthy America SM, Spring 2014 Undergraduate business administration student, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Kenan-Flagler Business School Working at Prevention Partners was a definitely a unique experience for me. I came in with plenty of office and professional experience, but none that incorporated health and wellness. I was pleasantly surprised how much adding activity breaks and healthy snacks actually improved my mood and the quality of work I was producing. Working at Prevention Partners opened my eyes to the world of public health and how I could fit in it. The guidance and information provided to me from everyone was overwhelmingly helpful. I am excited to take what I learned over the last semester and use it in my future endeavors!

Cara Wilck Product Support intern, Fall 2013 & Spring 2014 Recent graduate, Biology & Medical Humanities, Davidson College My time with Prevention Partners was an invaluable experience. I was looking for an opportunity to explore the field of prevention and wellness before applying to grad school. Through this experience, I saw the impact that a small group of people can have nationwide. The internship was a fast-pace environment where I gained knowledge and skills beyond my expectation. I was given responsibility for real projects that allowed me to develop my leadership and management skills. I helped plan various training events, led wellness challenges for the organization, and worked to coordinate data across multiple states and campaigns. Every day was new and exciting. Prevention Partners taught me that being healthy can actually be fun, especially when you have enthusiastic team members by your side. I leave Prevention Partners with a heavy heart, but I feel prepared to move on to the next step of my Public Health journey. Rachel Ross Research & Evaluation intern, Fall 2013 & Spring 2014 Graduate maternal & child health student, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Gillings School of Global Public Health I had an extremely rewarding experience as an intern at Prevention Partners. I had the opportunity to assist with a number of meaningful projects and deliverables, including compiling hospital data, creating county report cards for Burke and Lenoir Counties, analyzing wellness scorecards, and planning the inaugural meeting of the Wellness Research Council. During my internship, I developed essential skills in research, data entry, and evaluation and was able to broaden my knowledge of worksite wellness, health promotion, nonprofit management, and public health practice. This experience complemented my master s curriculum perfectly. Most importantly, I enjoyed my internship at Prevention Partners due to reasons that were separate from the work itself. The environment was very collaborative and team-based, and everyone in the office was extremely welcoming and friendly. I also had wonderful mentors who were incredibly helpful and supportive. Lastly, I appreciated how the staff demonstrated their passion for health and wellness every chance they got--from exercising in the office, to holding walking meetings and wellness challenges--i had never seen such dedication before! I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to intern at Prevention Partners, and I know that I will be able to apply all that I've learned in my future career as a public health professional.

Nan Jin Research & development intern for WorkHealthy America SM, Spring 2014 Graduate student, Duke University, Global Health Institute Prevention Partners was a great and happy place to work and learn. I contributed to several projects, which gave me a great opportunity to work and think independently and also to communicate my thoughts with colleagues. The opportunity to join routine meetings gave me the opportunity to learn about other products and projects, as well as how an NGO (non-governmental organization) operates, and how to communicate properly in different situations. My internship was very flexible to my interests, and I was able to ask to participate other projects. I think the 12-week internship here not only taught me skills, but also big picture of running a small NGO. The staff working here are very professional and nice to work with. They are very open to any great ideas and suggestions; they are passionate with their work and their prevention dreams. They work hard and enjoy the process. Beyond the work, Olympic challenges, walking meeting and healthy snacks will all cheer your days here. Eugene Wong Tobacco cessation advocacy & policy intern, Fall 2013 & Spring 2014 Undergraduate health policy & management student, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Gillings School of Global Public Health I had heard so much about other intern experiences at Prevention Partners, and I am so thankful that I get to write about my own experience! Working at Prevention Partners has truly been a rewarding and stimulating experience. I came into this organization with an interest in public health, but I wanted to gain practical experience in this field. Interns are a vital part of the work that Prevention Partners does. The work that interns get to do matters and has an actual impact on the organization. The experiences that I got from this internship translate to real skills that I ll be able to use in my career. I interacted with a variety of stakeholders and learned a lot about leadership engagement, a specialty of Prevention Partners! I gained a LOT of knowledge concerning tobacco and cessation efforts. After interning with Prevention Partners for a year, I decided to take the tobacco cessation work outside of my internship and continue it into my future career. The staff are superb and super friendly. The work atmosphere is amazing! They talk the talk and walk the walk! It s evident in everything that they do that they are passionate about their work! I have truly enjoyed my time here and plan on keeping in touch with everyone that I have connected with here. Even if you re not sure if you want to go into public health, consider an internship with Prevention Partners!

Robin Conklin Tobacco cessation advocacy intern, Spring 2014 Graduate student, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Nursing My time spent at Prevention Partners has proven to be invaluable. While working on projects for the Tobacco Cessation team, I participated in grant writing, coordinated and attended meetings with hospital leadership regarding their tobacco cessation programs, and further developed my research and writing skills. As Prevention Partners' first nursing student intern, I was exposed to the field of public health in a way that will greatly enhance my skills as a nurse and patient advocate. The connection between health prevention and nursing cannot be understated. This internship has provided me with the knowledge, skills and confidence to bridge that connection through my nursing practice. Neha Vennekkat Strategic Alliances intern, Fall 2013 Undergraduate health policy & management student, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Gillings School of Global Public Health Throughout the 12 week experience, I truly felt like an engaged employee and know that I contributed to the great work of this organization. The depth of my exposure was immeasurable, and I am grateful to have been able to connect with so many influential public health leaders. This experience has strengthened my passion for this field and has me excited for the future. Jordan Nash Program training & communications intern, Fall 2013 Undergraduate student, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Journalism and Mass Communications As a person who isn t familiar with public health, I was nervous coming into my internship with Prevention Partners. However, the entire staff made me feel right at home. My skills were valued and I really felt like I was making a difference in the organization. I always felt like I was a valued member of the Prevention Partners team. I learned many skills that will help me in the future and am very fortunate to have been an intern with Prevention Partners.

McKinley Kelcy Strategic Alliances intern, Fall 2013 Undergraduate health policy & management student, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Gillings School of Global Public Health My internship was invaluable to me. This internship was a practical way to apply the material I have studied in the classroom. With a passion for hospital administration, I was really interested in how Prevention Partners engaged hospitals and their leadership in wellness campaigns to improve the health of their employees. Through my experience with Prevention Partners, I had the opportunity to learn how hospitals can change their policies and benefits in order to encourage employees to quit tobacco, improve their nutrition, and increase physical exercise. In addition, I had the ability to practice crucial skills that can be applied to future graduate programs and careers through meaningful individual and group projects. My individual projects gave me experience with creating databases and formulas that would be used by staff to manage national wellness campaigns. I also had the opportunity to work with another intern and many staff to update and rewrite a campaign manual, which would be distributed to partners in order to help walk them through the implementation of a wellness campaign. This project immersed me into the collaborative nature of Prevention Partners. With the support of a group of staff that is devoted to helping interns succeed, my internship with Prevention Partners gave me great experience in the field of public health while developing essential leadership and management skills. Trinh Le Customer Outreach intern for Zone Health and WorkHealthy America, Fall 2013 Nutrition graduate student, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Gillings School of Global Public Health Prevention Partners was a valuable place for me to develop my career interests as a soon to be RD (Registered Dietitian) interested in prevention from a policy perspective. I was able to interact with teachers, wellness coordinators, and school board members, discussing challenges and successes in implementing health policies, such as removing sodas from their vending machines. Through my internship experience, I learned to what it means to be healthy and how to define this in a way that is politically palatable to different stakeholders. Prevention Partners helped me better understand public health from a broad policy perspective to complement my Masters in Public Health curriculum at UNC. When I think of the Prevention Partners staff, I think of fun, fit and fruit! Staff here lead a balanced work life and encourage interns to do the same. There are wellness challenges, a mini gym and fruit bowls at every turn. Staff is always warm and welcoming of interns and their diverse perspectives. They constantly offer a variety of opportunities for interns to learn as well as practice what they know. I recommend this internship for someone who is interested in public health or think they might be.
