We focus on high-impct growth opportunities in the telecommunictions, flt pnel disply, environmentl, life sciences nd semiconductor industries. As erly s 1974, when fier optic technology ws still in its initil stge, Corning ws one of the originl pioneers, with expertise second to none. We were working with Europe s leding Pulic Telecommunictions compnies in developing tril fier optic cle routes. In 1977 cme the first fier optic route for Deutsche Telekom in Berlin. This ws followed in 1979 y further projects in the USA, mrking the strt of glol usiness with string of mjor commercil contrcts. In 2000 Corning grouped ll its cle, hrdwre nd equipment usinesses into division. now comprises the former Siecor Corportion, the communiction cles usiness from BICC (Corning Cles Ltd.), Siemens former Communiction Cles division nd RXS Kelgrnituren. In the re of copper cling, the mture Series 71 cme out in 1971 s n MDF product with IDC technology, followed y set of most successful products like in Series 5000 nd Series 1000RT. Tody disposes of more thn 35 yers of rich experience in successful copper IDC technology. Customers round the world pprecite Corning MDF products for performnce highest qulity nd reliility. 4

An Excellent Qulity Mngement System is relile prtner tht meets the communiction needs of its customers ll over the world with cost-effective solutions. Corning Cle systems stnds for technicl expertise, superior product qulity nd customized support services. Our qulity nd environmentl mngement systems re certified to DIN EN ISO 9001 nd ISO14001. Our glol presence is your gin ecuse, wherever you re, Corning is close t hnd. 5

Technicl Principles Insultion Displcement Connection Doule IDC Contct Soldering methods were replced y connection techniques vi cutting insultion some decdes go. Through this chnge, time-consuming soldering, screwing or filling procedures hve een eliminted. With this technology, the wire is inserted in the IDC contct (Insultion Displcement Connection) y hnd nd pressed into it y using simple termintion / punch-down tool. The wire insultion is stripped during the termintion process in the IDC contct where the connection is mde. DIN IEC 352 descries the requirements for this soldering-, screw- nd stripping-free connection in detil. Functionl elements of Series 71 distriution locks re lwys fitted with doule IDC contcts. The doule contct llows interruption-free jumpering. This mens tht in ddition to the existing connection, e.g. jumpers from the suscrier to the system, second connection to new connecting point cn lso e estlished without interrupting the existing connection. The inry structure of the switching systems (8, 16 or 32 suscriers per line crd) is the reson tht distriution locks intended to connect the switching system lso hve inry structure, e.g. 4-pir functionl element in the cse of the Series 71 or n 8-pir functionl element in the Series 5000. The suscriers re generlly connected vi cles orgnized in groups of ten. Accordingly, the distriution locks hve n x 5 structure for the Series 71 (5-pir functionl element) or n x 10 structure for the Series 5000 (10-pir functionl element). The numer of system or suscrier lines to e connected per distriution lock depends minly on the pir count of the cles used. Most of the suscriers in the centrl office re therefore connected to the relevnt distriution locks using 100 or 200 pir cles. The sme pplies to the system side, where 128 wire pir cles re used. The ove descried systemtics is est supported y the 8- nd 10-pir distriution locks of the Series 5000 with 100, 128, 200 nd 512 wire pirs. Series 71 Distriution Blocks re less spce effective nd need twice the numer of functionl elements to support similr wire pir counts. As descried on pge 10, distriution lock siclly consists of metl chssis, functionl elements nd wire guides. The wire guides ensure tht the wires re clerly orgnized in the distriution lock. Ech wire pir is led to the relevnt IDC contcts through the wire guides. 6 The importnce of hving good wire nd cle orgniztion increses with the numer of users to e connected. The jumper com ssemlies of the distriution locks nd the jumpering loops of the distriution frmes re therefore just s importnt to good cle orgniztion s the wire guides.

Technicl Principles Min Distriution Frme Tsks Options for Appliction The min distriution frme (MDF) is the interfce etween the suscrier cles coming in from ll directions nd the switching system. The suscrier cles nd the system cles re ll led nd connected to the min distriution frme. The connection etween oth cle sides is implemented y jumpering. In ddition to connecting nd orgnizing ll cles, the min distriution frme lso provides the option to instll protection ginst overvoltge nd overcurrent for service technicins nd the switching system itself. Suscrier nd system cles cn e oth checked nd disconnected in the min distriution frme; xdsl splitters for dt trnsmission cn e instlled s well. Min distriution frmes re used wherever lrge numer of suscriers needs to e connected with the switching system, for exmple in networks of telecommunictions providers or in lrge uildings such s nks, insurnce compnies nd hedqurters of glol plyers. Jumpering All underground suscrier cles re connected to specific distriution components (line or suscrier lock) in the min distriution frme. Not every suscrier wire pir is necessrily connected to suscrier. By the sme token spre pirs in suscrier cles do not need to e connected to the switching system. Additionl suscrier wire pirs re only connected to the system if required. Frequently the switching system nd the min distriution frme my not e in the sme room or even on the sme floor. Given tht ech operting wire pir cnnot e guided to the switching system over severl floors, the required wire pirs re connected to n dditionl distriution component (system lock to which the system cles re connected). Thus the wire pirs in use re connected in stges to these distriution components. These connections re in turn connected to the switching system vi cles (e.g. 128 wire pirs). The cles cn then e led over severl floors to the switching system without ny difficulty. 7

Technicl Principles Distriution Frme Vritions Min distriution frmes cn e rrnged verticlly or verticlly / horizontlly nd re ville s wllmounted or free-stnding vrints. The choice of the distriution frmes depends on the loction s well s on the numer of suscriers tht hve to e connected. recommends tht merely verticl distriutors should e used for less thn 5,000-10,000 suscriers to e connected. If the numer of suscriers is higher, the need for cross jumpering increses. We therefore recommend using verticl / horizontl distriution frme which est supports cross jumpering etween the horizontl distriution locks. By compring the option for cross jumpering of oth MDF types, the difference ecomes ovious: in distriution frme with 13 horizontls there re 12 cross jumpering options, wheres most of the verticl distriution frmes offer cross-jumpering only ove nd elow the verticl distriution locks. Wll-mounted frme, verticl Wll-mounted frme, verticl / horizontl Free-stnding frme, verticl Free-stnding frme, verticl / horizontl Recommended for < 5.000 suscriers Recommended for > 5.000 suscriers Recommended for < 5.000 suscriers Recommended for > 5.000 suscriers 8

Technicl Principles Overvoltge Overvoltge / Overcurrent Protection Dmge cused y overvoltge / overcurrent is one of the most common cuses of mlfunctions in communiction devices. Overvoltge / overcurrent cn stop individul components or even result in the filure of entire centrl offices. Without sufficient protection, telecommuniction equipment is exposed to potentilly costly nd dngerous thret. Dmge cn e cused y lightning, electrosttic or electromgnetic interference or y power lines coming into contct with communictions lines. Primry protection ginst such dmge consists in inserting protection mgzines into the distriution components nd in grounding the system in ccordnce with the relevnt requirements. In the context of telecommunictions, distinction is mde etween the following types of protection: Overvoltge Protection (3-Point Protection) The overvoltge protection mgzines / plugs re fitted with 3-electrode rresters (see the circuit digrm on pge 27 et sqq.). In cse of overvoltge, n rc is generted in the rrester which dischrges the energy towrds the ground potentil. The rc is roken when the voltge flls elow the nominl response direct voltge of the rrester. This reversile procedure cn e repeted numer of times if necessry. Overcurrent Protection (2-Point Protection) The overcurrent single pir protector is fitted with PTCs, i.e. Positive Temperture Coefficient (see the circuit digrm on pge 27 et sqq.). When the nominl current of the PTC is exceeded, the component hets up nd the resistnce increses exponentilly. The PTC therefore limits the current. The PTC cools down in ccordnce with the lod nd then returns to its originl stte. This reversile procedure cn lso e repeted numer of times if necessry. 9

Technicl Principles Description The distriution components consist of the following elements: Metll chssis used for the stle mounting of the functionl elements nd wire guides 4- or 5-pir functionl elements re fitted with doule IDC contcts with nd without option for overvoltge protection Wire guides with doule chnnels guide the twisted wire pirs to the IDC contcts Jumper coms used to give cler structure to the designted undles of pirs per functionl element The following optionl elements my e ordered: Protection mgzine 3-point (overvoltge) protection mgzine with 3-electrode rresters 2-point (overcurrent) protection plug with polymer PTCs to e instlled from the front side 10 Accessories Termintion tool Leling sets (including lel holders nd covers) Lel strips Disconnection/dummy plugs Mrking cps Cle cover
