Job description for the post of Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) Programme Leader EH2703 Fixed term until 31 August 2011 Reporting to: Accountable to: Head of PD Dean of Faculty of Education The Post The post holder will play a significant role in providing academic leadership for the MTL Programme together with playing a key co-ordination role supported by the Head of PD. There will, in addition, be opportunities to contribute to work elsewhere in PD and to other areas within the Faculty of Education. Edge Hill is the largest provider of MTL in the North West of England and is responsible for over 33% of all MTL participants registered with the seven MTL HEI Consortium members. The post holder will seek to further consolidate this leading position and will be responsible for developing the MTL partnership with schools and LAs. The principal place of work for this post is Edge Hill s main base at Ormskirk. However, in accordance with the institution s current contract, staff may be required to work at any premise that Edge Hill has or may subsequently acquire. The specific nature of this post may require the post holder to work in a number of locations both regionally and nationally; a willingness and ability to travel are essential requisites for the post. Duties and Responsibilities The duties and responsibilities of this post are as follows. The post holder will be expected to carry out the following as and when required.
Corporate Responsibilities The post holder will: a) Participate in Edge Hill s decision-making process. b) Contribute to and serve as appropriate on internal committees, working and advisory groups. c) Contribute to the fulfilment of Edge Hill s Mission Statement and Strategic Plan by implementing agreed Edge Hill policy. d) Encourage and promote the generation of income including the provision of research and consultancy. e) Promote and implement the Institution s equal opportunities policies. Specific Duties and Responsibilities The post holder will be expected as and when required to: a) To be responsible for the academic leadership of MTL ensuring that standards are maintained and enhanced as appropriate. b) To be responsible for the co-ordination and management of MTL which includes: I. to oversee the effective day-to-day running of the programme II. to ensure, in liaison with administrative staff, the programme is effectively administered III. to ensure, in liaison with administrative staff, that Assessment Board information is presented accurately and on time, and represent the programme at all related Assessment Boards IV. to liaise with phase and module leaders on matters relating to the day-today management of the programme V. to ensure effective external relations with External Examiners VI. to respond to External Examiner reports and present reports and responses to the appropriate Programmes Board VII. to employ the Faculty and University s monitoring, evaluation and review requirements to underpin and develop the quality of the programmes VIII. to support and where appropriate take a lead role in the validation and re-validation of these programmes when necessary IX. to report to the Head of PD on the implementation of these responsibilities c) Develop, monitor and review a strategy to ensure that all participants are able to complete within designated time scales.
d) Lead modules within MTL, as appropriate. e) Work directly with schools and LAs to ensure that the quality of MTL delivery is outstanding in all respects. f) Contribute effectively to the Faculty and PD area in a chosen area of research and scholarly development. g) Undertake professional updating activities to ensure that practice and curriculum development is relevant and current. h) Undertake teaching duties and responsibilities. i) Be a member of the relevant Programmes Boards. j) Represent the area and Edge Hill on appropriate external committees. k) Promote the work of the institution and participate in the recruitment, selection and induction of participants. l) Be responsible for line-managing staff who contribute to MTL. m) Act, as and when require, and in accordance with Edge Hill s procedures, as a Personal Tutor for a group of participants. n) Assist the Head of Area in the curriculum development of the area s other academic programmes. o) Organise and administer task in an efficient and effective manner. p) Use teaching and learning strategies, which encourage participant involvement and advance their independent learning. q) Undertake any other duties as deemed appropriate by the line manager and commensurate with the post. r) Accept responsibility for the overall development and effective and efficient operation of high quality academic programmes in the subject area concerned in the context of the Institution s agreed objectives and strategic plan. This may include: I.ensuring that staff contributing to programmes are fully prepared for the effective performance of their duties II.effectively co-ordinating the team of staff who contribute to programmes in order to maximise their individual and collective contributions III.managing and administering the effective delivery of courses
IV.developing, as required, appropriate documentation in accordance with the Institution s guidelines to support the processes of Edge Hill s quality assurance (including materials relating to course approval, enhancement process, review and evaluation) V.take responsibility for overseeing the welfare, progression, examination and assessment of participants and drawing to the attention of the head of area any issues as appropriate VI.on behalf of the head of area take responsibility for the effective academic administration of a designated area. In addition to the above duties all staff are required to: a) Participate in Edge Hill s Performance Review scheme. b) Respect confidentiality.
