MSC Tackle Box www.marcosportfishingclub.com Pete Arcidiacono, President Dedicated to Safely Fishing in and around Collier County May 2012 President s Message by Peter Arcidiacono 821-7499 Hey Everybody: I have a quick reminder this month. Please remember to call in your fish of the Month so you can qualify for the prize should it be the largest in its class. You can register via web site or email. Red and Black Grouper are back in season and the reds are everywhere! As the summer months approach the Board of Directors begins work on next year s activates and begin to look for new board members. We appreciate all input from you regarding events and activities as well as your interest in being a part of the board of Directors. So let us know. Our next membership meeting is to be held May 3. We will be having Doctor Cohen and his wife speak on boating first aid and avoiding sun damage while out on the water. Remember; There s no excuse, GO FISHING See ya at the bait shop, Pete A April Meeting Topics On April 5, The focus of the meeting was to finalize all the details for the Rootin Tootin Red Grouper Tournament to be held later in the month. The registration had been closed as all the spots had been filled with over 80 anglers! To make it fair to all, we got some inside tips from Grouper Guide Capt. Mike Avinon. Even though peak season was winding down, we had over 150 members and guests. Club membership is at an all-time high with over 300 family memberships! The water is getting warmer and the fish are getting hungrier! Sign up for a tournament or outing! Stay Safe! Use Sunscreen, big brim hat, good sunglasses and drink lots of water. Avoid storms. Wear an inflatable PFD. File a float plan with sig other before leaving.

Rootin Tootin Red Grouper Shootout Results by Howard Laskau The first Rootin Tootin Red Grouper Shootout was a great success! From the kickoff event at Bistro Soleil to the "weigh-in" at the Old Marco Lodge and ending up with a slightly soggy awards picnic at Walker's Marina...the fun, excitement and energy was at all-time high levels. The Marco Sportfishing Club owes a lot of thanks to our club organizers and sponsors...walker s Marine, Pursuit Boats, and Mercury Marine for their financial support that provided the opportunity to put on such a great schedule of events for the week. 22 boats and 82 anglers entered the competition and were all set to test their skill on Thursday, but high winds and rough seas made it necessary to postpone the event by one day. Friday was a great day for fishing and all the boats headed out, with 9 boats in the 15 mile division and 13 in the 50 mile division. The official measuring festivities took place at the Old Marco Lodge in Goodland. Some of the anglers brought their catch in by boat, others put their fish in a cooler and brought it by car. The crowd of onlookers grew as the time passed. The official scoreboard kept everyone updated on who was in the lead. The anglers whose fish were on the scoreboard watched closely as the new fish came in, hoping their fish was big enough to stay on the board. At 6:30, results were final. Team A&B (Andrea Battaglia and Brian Mordecai) ended up the winners in the 15 mile division, with a 22 1/2 inch red grouper, edging out the second place finisher, Team Gold Nugget, by 3/4 inch. The 50 mile division was won by Team Larson. Dick Larson and his fishing partners Jerry DeLaurentis, Jerry Harmeyer, Kirk Evans, Leslie Shade and Dave Cox caught a 29 1/4 red grouper, just beating out the second place team, Team Mueller, by 1/8 inch! A wildcard fish in each division was also a part of the competition. There were no winners in the 50 mile division, but in the 15 mile division, Carl Bressan won top prize with a 15 3/4 inch Spanish Mackerel. On Saturday, the Awards Picnic was held at Walker s Marina in Goodland. Despite the threat of rain, over 120 people showed up. The rain held off just long enough for all to enjoy some of Jim Walker's home-smoked pork and burgers on the grill. It was a great ending to a great week! Thanks to Allan Bristow and Howard Laskau, it was a Terrific Fun and Safe Outing. Editor.

Holy Mackerel Offshore May Tournament by Ed Vesely The offshore "Holy Mackerel Tourney" is scheduled for Thursday, May 17th. Phil Madonia is helping with this event. It is a MSC sponsored tournament and prizes will be awarded for both King's and Spanish. We also are going to pool $10 from each participant and award additional prizes. A Captains and Crew meeting will be held, Monday, May 14th, 4:00 pm at Porky's. We will announce the prize categories at this time. We will have a get-together for all participants the day after fishing, with the time and place to be announced. Email Phil or Ed to sign up for this event, or sign up at the May membership meeting. April 14 th Buddy List Trip by Joe Perino Seven boats and 22 anglers met at the Jolly Bridge at the crack of dawn (9 AM) and travelled to Keewaydin Island for a fun day of fishing. It was pleasantly warm with moderate winds and moderate tides. In fact, the weather was perfect until about 1 PM when nature presented us with a downpour of rain that was in a class all by itself. Some of us remembered our Boy Scout motto of Be Prepared and broke out the rain gear. Those who were not Boy Scouts, got very, very wet. The catch consisted of Black Drum, Whiting, Spotted Sea Trout, Spanish Mackerel, Jacks, Pompano, small bait stealing Snappers, Sheepshead and very few Catfish. As usual, the trip ended with a great social event with cocktails and dinner at Vandy s that was attended by 27 people. All in all it was a wonderful day. The next Buddy List Trip will be in July. If you have any questions/comments or wish to be added to the list contact Joe Perino rivpress@aol.com MSC Master Angler Award The Master Angler Award acknowledges proficiency in catching multiple species over a multiple period of years. One point is awarded each time a member finishes the month with the winning entry for the FOM contest, or finishes the year with the leading entry for a particular species on the Leader Board. A total of 10 points will qualify the member for this special award. Points are tabulated at the end of each calendar year. The limit of this contest is 5 years. Kayak Outing; April 10, 2012 by Victor Ordija Five kayaks set out into Goodland Bay and ventured into Hell s Gate. This is an entry point into Lighter Bay and is a route frequently used by large airboats which had to be avoided on several occasions. Air boat is visible in background!!

While fishing was slow due to poor water clarity, a 30 inch Snook was caught along with several small Snook, a 17 inch Sea Trout and lots of Snappers. Beautiful day on the water followed by lunch and beers at Marker 8 in Goodland. Next Event: Kayak Fishing McIlvane Bay May 16, 2012 This next kayak fishing event will take advantage of the new Collier Paddle Craft Park which is now open. The new park provides easy access to McIlvane Bay which reportedly holds good numbers of Snook and Redfish. Start and End time; 8:30 AM-2:00 PM. Drop point for kayaks is at the new Collier Paddle Craft Park @ Hwy s 951 and 952 Capri. This is a beautiful facility with ample parking and other amenities. According to an article in the Marco Island Sun Times, there will be a charge of $4 to launch. After the event, we can partake in a late lunch and/or beverages at the Capri Fish House if anyone is interested. In the event of bad weather and the trip is cancelled, the alternate date is Friday, May 18, 2012. Contact Victor Ordija at vicord1@comcast.net or call 239-494-6741 (home) or 203-906-7328 (cell) to sign up for the trip. Important Newsletter Update! The newsletter printing and mailing is a major cost item to the club. That was the driving force in changing the format to a shorter newsletter and fewer photos. To help offset the cost of the newsletter, we have obtained our first corporate sponsor! David Caruso of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney s Marco office is working with the MSC board to work out the arrangements. Starting in June there will be a MSSB banner ad template that runs on the bottom of the first two pages of the newsletter. They will also be the titled sponsor of our Triple Crown Fishing Tournament! Contact me, the editor, David Rasmussen at 518 859 7033 cell or drasmussen@mdaturbines.com and let me know how I can make it better! Picnics-Comments from Dave Walsh We had our biggest picnic ever in March with Sister Kaite- over 150 people. There were a few issues at check in, primarily due to the fact that there were many more walk-ins than we had ever had, and I underestimated the number of sandwiches to order. For large picnics with that many people checking in within a 15 minute period, it is very hectic for the check-in crew and we can t resolve all issues immediately (e.g. Your name isn t on the Paid list), and ask your patience. I m trying to figure out a better system. If there are any un-resolved issues from the March picnic (I owe you money?), please let me know. Picnic Parking We still have a problem with the County where they are threatening to write tickets on cars, even with the proper County sticker, if you walk directly into the picnic, and don t go to the beach. If we have any attorneys in the club who would like to volunteer to talk to the County about this, we need your help. In the meantime, please be aware that you could get a ticket in the County lot if they watch you go to our picnic first. I suggest you take a walk across the street to the entrance to south beach first.
