SysMan Remte Cntrl Server With the term SysMan Remte Cntrl Server we refer t the machine being remtely cntrlled i.e. the server refers t the machine yu cnnect t. SysMan Remte Cntrl Client User Interface The SysMan Remte Cntrl client user interface is the windw in which the remte sessin is displayed. It is invked frm the SysMan Utilities windw. SysMan Remte Cntrl Server service The service that runs the SysMan Remte Cntrl server is installed n remte machines t which cnnectins are t be made using the SysMan Remte Cntrl Client. This service can be installed: remtely frm the client, r manually after lgging int the remte machine, r via any sftware distributin service yu may be using After installatin, the service runs as a Windws service called SysMan Remte Cntrl Server. 4 Definitins Sysgem SysMan Remte Cntrl User Guide
Getting Started Start Remte Cntrl Startup Icn SysMan Remte Cntrl is started frm within the SysMan Utilities prgram. Duble click n the Sysgem SysMan Utilities icn that has been placed n yur Windws desktp during the installatin f the prduct. Explre the Netwrk The SysMan desktp pens up and autmatically starts the SysMan Explrer windw. Open up the explrer tree in the left-hand side f the SysMan Explrer windw and select the machine that yu want t use with Remte Cntrl. In this example, the SYSGEM-WS2 machine has been selected in the explrer tree n the left. All the SysMan Utilities tls that are available n SYSGEM-WS2 are shwn in the pane n the right, including the SysMan Remte Cntrl ptin (which is selected in the example abve). Cnnect t a Remte System fr the First Time Install the Remte Cntrl Server Autmatically Befre SysMan Remte Cntrl can cnnect t a remte machine, the Remte Cntrl service must first be installed n that machine. If an attempt is made t cnnect t a remte machine which des nt have the Remte Cntrl Server service installed, then SysMan will prmpt yu t start the service status dialg as shwn belw. The SysMan Remte Cntrl Service Status dialg is started and autmatically verifies the RC Server service installatin status n the remte machine. If the service is nt installed, SysMan will ffer t start the remte installatin. Again, click Yes. Nte: The service installatin prcess needs sufficient privileges n the remte machine fr the installatin t succeed. If yur Windws user accunt is a member f the Administratrs grup, the installatin shuld prceed withut the need t prvide any further credentials. If it des nt, then cancel the Install it nw? prmpt and prvide sufficient credentials first, typically f an accunt that is a member f the Administratrs grup. Befre the remte installatin begins, the Installatin Optins dialg is displayed t allw server ptins t be prvided. Nte: the settings cnfigured here can be changed after installatin, as shwn later in this guide. Sessin passwrd: Passwrd: The ptinal sessin passwrd entered in this field permits a cnnectin t the remte machine t be made withut using Windws credentials. Cnfirm: Re-type the chsen sessin passwrd here fr cnfirmatin. Server ptins: Shw cnnectin list when active: If this ptin is set, a windw will be displayed n the target system indicating that Remte Cntrl sessin(s) are active, and which IP address(es) are cnnected. Allw user t cntrl incming cnnectins: If set, a user that is lgged n t the remte machine has the ptin t reject a cnnectin. Nte: if this ptin is set, then by default the server is cnfigured t autmatically reject cnnectin requests after a 10-secnd timeut. Allw user t change Remte Cntrl settings: If enabled, then the user f the target system can pen the server s Optins dialg bx t change the server cnfiguratin. The remte installatin prgress is displayed, as shwn belw. Wait fr the installatin t cmplete and click Clse t clse the Installatin Prgress windw. Initiate cnnectin After accepting the ffer t cnnect t the server in the previus step, the Cnnect T dialg bx will be displayed with the server name already set apprpriately. If yu cnfigured a sessin passwrd when installing the server, enter it in the Passwrd field and click OK t cnnect. If yu did nt specify a sessin passwrd, yu will need t use Windws credentials t authenticate; t d this, change the Type field t SysMan Remte Cntrl (with Windws username and passwrd) and then prvide a suitable username and passwrd in the apprpriate fields. After clicking OK, the RC client will attempt t cnnect t the remte server. Upn successful cnnectin, the remte display is presented in the Remte Cntrl windw. RC Client User Interface Managing Remte Sessins - The File Menu All actins related t the starting and stpping f a sessin can be invked frm the File menu: New Windw File Menu: New Windw: Opens a new instance f the SysMan Remte Cntrl client user interface, in which a new cnnectin can be started. Managing cnnectins File Menu: Cnnect T : This ptin starts the Cnnect T dialg, allwing a cnnectin t be started manually (rather than initiating a cnnectin frm the SysMan Utilities brwser windw). Fr mre infrmatin n this dialg please refer t the Manually Enter Access Credentials sectin f this dcument. Discnnect: Discnnects the currently-active sessin. User Interface Preferences File Menu: Preferences: pens a dialg bx where preferences can be cnfigured fr the RC Client user interface. Display preferences: Shrink remte display t fit windw: This ptin shrinks the remte display t fit the SysMan Remte Cntrl windw. It des nt alter the remte display s reslutin. Resize windw t fit display: By enabling this ptin, SysMan Remte Cntrl will autmatically attempt t adapt its windw size t the size f the remte display upn cnnectin. Multiple mnitrs: These ptins cntrl hw SysMan displays the remte desktp after cnnectin, when the remte machine has mre than ne mnitr in use. Shw entire desktp by default: This ptin shws all the remte displays in a single SysMan Remte Cntrl windw. Shw primary mnitr by default: Initially shw the primary mnitr nly. When a cnnectin fails: Offer t check the service status: When this ptin is enabled, failed cnnectin attempts will be fllwed by a prmpt t pen the SysMan RC Service Status dialg in rder t check whether the SysMan Remte Cntrl Server service is installed and running n the target machine. The reslutin setting n the target machine will nt be affected. Resize Windw t Fit: Attempt t adapt the size f the SysMan Remte Cntrl user interface windw t the size f the remte display. Desktp Cntrl View Menu: View Only: Dn t allw cntrl f the remte machine frm the SysMan Remte Cntrl user interface. Lck Remte Keybard and Muse: Prhibits desktp cntrl n the server side. That is, temprary prevents the user sitting behind the remte screen frm cntrlling the keybard and muse. Frwarding Htkeys - The Send Menu The SysMan Remte Cntrl client user interface has several predefined htkeys that can be sent t the target system in a sessin. All f these are available frm the Send menu. Pre-defined Htkey Cmbinatins Send Menu: Ctrl-Esc: Frwards Ctrl-Escape (primarily t activate the Start menu). Alt-Tab: Frwards the Alt-Tab htkey, t switch between windws n the remte desktp Alt-Esc: Frwards Alt-Escape t place the active windw n the remte desktp behind all thers (if any) Ctrl-Alt-Del: Opens the security r lgn screen Ctrl-Shift-Esc: Equivalent t pressing Ctrl-Shift-Escape n the remte machine, typically pening the Windws task manager Capture Htkeys: Currently nt available Nte: the functin f these special key cmbinatins may differ frm the abve when cnnecting t nn-windws systems using SysMan RC s VNC supprt. Remte Cnnectin Tls As well cntrlling the remte desktp, SysMan ffers the means t exchange infrmatin with the remte nde. These are accessible thrugh the Tls menu: Starting a Chat Sessin with the Remte User Tls Menu: Chat with Remte: Start a chat sessin with the user sitting behind the remte desktp. Selecting this menu item will pen a chat windw, as the example belw shws. Transferring Files Between Server and Client Tls Menu: Transfer Files: This menu will display a file brwser windw that permits files t be selected and transferred in either directin. T transfer a file (r multiple files) frm the client machine t the target server, select the surce file and brwse fr the target lcatin, then click the Send >> buttn. Likewise, t start a transfer frm the remte server t the client machine, select the file n the server side, brwse t the required lcatin n the client side and then click the << Receive buttn. Access Credentials Credentials fr Lgging On t a Target Machine General Yu need sufficient access credentials in rder t gain access t a remte system with SysMan Remte Cntrl. The ptins are: 1. Use the username and passwrd belnging t a suitably-privileged Windws user accunt. 2. Use the SysMan Remte Cntrl Server sessin passwrd if ne was set when the service was installed. When d yu enter the details? 1. The credentials can be entered in the Remte Cntrl client s Cnnect T dialg bx, either when starting a cnnectin directly frm the Remte Cntrl windw r when n credentials are saved in SysMan Utilities (see belw) 2. The details can be set up (and stred) fr each remte machine s that they are used autmatically whenever yu select a machine in the SysMan Explrer windw and invke the SysMan Remte Cntrl tl. Manually Enter Access Credentials In the Remte Cntrl windw, either: Use the menu ptin: File > Cnnect T Click the Cnnect icn n the main tlbar:... and select the cmputer yu wish t cnnect t. The Type field in the dialg bx allws either a Windws user accunt t be used fr access, r the sessin passwrd that was cnfigured when the service was installed. If yu select the SysMan Remte Cntrl (with Windws username and passwrd) ptin, then enter the details f a suitably-privileged accunt (by default, a member f the machine s Administratrs grup). If yu select the SysMan Remte Cntrl (with cnnectin passwrd) ptin, then the username field will be grayed ut and yu shuld enter the sessin passwrd in the passwrd field. Nte: There is als a VNC ptin available in the cnnectin type list, which allws the SysMan RC user interface t establish a cnnectin with an existing VNC server n the remte machine (e.g. Linux, UNIX, Mac, and ther platfrms with VNC supprt). Default Credentials and Definitins Fr cnvenience, yu may set up access details that will be autmatically used whenever the Remte Cntrl tl is started frm the SysMan Explrer windw. Default credentials can be set fr a specific machine, a number f selected machines at nce, r as general default definitins (which will be applied when there are n specific credentials set fr a certain nde). T define general default definitins, right-click anywhere in the SysMan Explrer windw and select: Preference Settings, then select: Cnnectin Preferences. Use the menu ptin: General > Default Credentials. T set up machine specific credentials, select all machines yu wish t share the same set f credentials in the Cnnectin Preferences windw, then use the right muse menu ptin: Selected > Credentials. Select the Remte Cntrl tab: In bth the General Defaults settings and the Selected Ndes settings, the fllwing ptins fr credentials may be specified: The same as fr Tls and Utilities: Use the same credentials as defined n the Tls and Utilities tab. Always prmpt fr credentials: Which frces the Cnnect T windw t always ask fr credentials Specific user (Windws) credentials: Use the credentials f a specified user. By default, members f the Administratrs grup n the remte machine are granted access. SysMan RC Passwrd: Use the SysMan Remte Cntrl Server passwrd When cnfiguring credentials in the Selected Ndes dialg bx, the specified details will nly be used if the Enabled checkbx is set when nt enabled, the general default credentials will be used instead. Managing RC Server Installatins and Settings The SysMan Remte Cntrl Service Status Dialg A Central Pint fr Managing the RC Services All tls related t remte management f the SysMan Remte Cntrl Server service can be accessed frm a single starting pint: the SysMan Remte Cntrl Service Status dialg. This dialg can be pened frm the Tls menu: Sysgem SysMan Remte Cntrl User Guide Managing RC Server Installatins and Settings 25
If a sessin is active when the SysMan RC Service Status dialg is pened, it will default t the current remte server. T wrk with a different cmputer, r if n sessin is active, type the name f the target cmputer (r use the Brwse buttn t find it n the netwrk): General ntes n the SysMan RC Service Status dialg: Cmputer: Hlds the name r address f the target machine. By default, this will be the last server used in the current RC windw. If the name r address f the target is knwn then it can be typed here. Alternatively use the Brwse buttn t lcate the target machine Use current Windws credentials: All actins available in this windw require administrative privileges n the remte machine t succeed. By default, the SysMan RC Service Status dialg uses the current Windws lgn credentials t authenticate with the target nde. If the current Windws privileges are expected t be insufficient then uncheck the Use current Windws credentials ptin, t extend the dialg with a username and passwrd field where alternative lgn infrmatin can be prvided: 26 Managing RC Server Installatins and Settings Sysgem SysMan Remte Cntrl User Guide
Verify RC Server Status T check remte service existence and status frm the RC client windw, start the SysMan Remte Cntrl Service Status dialg (as described in the preceding sectin). Ensure the crrect cmputer name and apprpriate Windws credentials are selected, and click the Status buttn t cntinue: If the RC Server service desn t appear t be installed, SysMan autmatically ffers t initiate a remte installatin f the service right away. If the RC Server service is installed and accessible n the target then its status and versin will be shwn in the apprpriate fields in the SysMan RC Server Status dialg. Frm this pint the fllwing maintenance actins culd be perfrmed: Inspect the remte server settings, and if desired make changes, by clicking the Settings buttn Initiate a remte upgrade r reinstallatin: click the Install buttn Nte: The client will install its embedded versin f the RC server. Allw Remte Cntrl t be shut dwn: Permit the Remte Cntrl Server service t be shut dwn frm the desktp f the target machine by the user wh is lgged n lcally n the target machine. Shw cnnectin list when active: A windw will be displayed n the target machine whenever a Remte Cntrl sessin is active. The windw shws the IP address(es) f the user(s) wh are cnnected. Cnnectin Cntrl: Cnfirm incming cnnectins: The user wh is lgged n t the target machine will be prmpted befre the Remte Cntrl windw is allwed t cnnect t the target machine. The user can accept r reject the cnnectin request. Default actin: If n respnse is made t the prmpt requesting permissin t cnnect, then the default actin (after the timeut perid has elapsed) will be t accept r reject the cnnectin, depending n this setting. Cnfigure Allwed Grups: Assign cnnectin privileges t Windws grups, r specific users. By default members f the lcal Administratrs grup have been assigned full access.
