Introducton The preventon, reducton, re-use and recyclng of waste s essental n order for the Unversty College to meet ts target of reducng the volume of waste that t sends to landfll. Landfll stes are used to bury waste n a controlled envronment, but landfll space s runnng out. It has been estmated that we have less than ten years of landfll left so we need to take acton now. The purpose of ths handbook s to advse students, staff and vstors to the Unversty College, of the procedures for the dsposal of all waste, what can be recycled and what becomes of t when t leaves the premses. We are commtted to mplementng best practce on the prncples of preventon, reducton, re-use and recyclng. As you can see recyclng s fourth on the lst of sx n the Waste Herarchy (llustrated n Fg. 1 below) as a least favoured opton wth preventon and reducton beng the favoured opton. Fg. 1: The Waste Herarchy Preventon/Mnmsaton - If an tem must be used, use as lttle as possble. Reuse - Ths s where a product s bought and resold on wth the same purpose (e.g. car boot sales) or reused for somethng else (e.g. jam jars for storage). Recyclng - A waste s processed nto a new product (e.g. glass, plastcs, cans and compostng). Energy Recovery - Takng waste/part of a waste stream, and usng t as a fuel (e.g. makng paper logs, waste-to-energy plants). Dsposal The UK s largest dumper of waste nto landfll n the EU. The UK dumps 27 mllon tonnes each year, seven mllon more than any other country. HARPER ADAMS UNIVERSITY COLLEGE - RECYCLING HANDBOOK 1
