Kaufman High School Introduction Kaufman High School is one of several schools planned to be renovated and expanded as part of the November 2014 Bond as a way to: Address an aging campus Provide new instructional space for current capacity issues as well as future growth Increase safety and security The current High School is composed of multiple detached buildings and classrooms that open to the exterior, creating safety and security issues. Not only has it exceeded its functional student capacity, the support spaces such as an auditorium and the gymnasiums are either not sufficient or not present at all. The proposed facility will address the issues above by demolishing a majority of the existing campus, and replacing it with new construction that is energy efficient, accommodates the new and future student capacity, and adds an auditorium, new competition gym, and new career and technical programs space. The new facility will also have additional security features which increase the safety of the students and faculty. HIGH SCHOOL, JUNIOR HIGH & INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL ADDITIONS & RENOVATIONS KAUFMAN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT Site Design The existing site does not provide a separate drive for parents and buses, creating confusion and safety hazards during peak traffic times. The proposed plan will provide separate drives for each transportation type, as well as separate staff, visitor, and student parking. A large parking lot on the North side of the site will accommodate all student parking, and is perfectly situated for special events held in the auditorium, competition gym, and cafetorium. It is also adjacent to the relocated and reoriented softball field, providing convenient and accessible parking for that facility as well. Access drives and loading areas will be provided for larger scale deliveries and vehicles, located at the Auditorium, Fine Arts wing, and Ag Shop. A new drive will separate the new High School facility from the Junior High, creating separation and better access around the building. Aging Facilities and Student Capacity Over the years, Kaufman High School has gained several buildings on campus, all connected by outdoor covered walkways. The existing core instructional spaces are not sufficient for today s instructional methods or programs, nor the student capacity that exists today. As growth in Kaufman ISD is expected to continue, additional instructional space is desired. New programs focused on career and technical education require specialized classrooms and labs, which are not present in the existing facility. The proposed design incorporates several of the newer spaces on the campus, namely the gymnasium, cafetorium, and science wing, replacing and supplementing the older spaces with new construction. The existing science and math wing will be updated, adjacent to additional classroom and laboratory space of new construction. New administration, library, core instructional space, and career and technical spaces will create a connection between the existing science wing and the existing Cafetorium. The new library will provide a centrally located area for students to utilize in several different ways, using traditional resources as well as the newest technology. A multi-level space is allocated for the library, which allows for several different zones within the same space for CONTINUED NARRATIVE High School, Junior High School & Intermediate School Additions & Renovations, Kaufman Independent School District 3

collaboration or individual study. The administration is located at the main entry, which incorporates a controlled access vestibule. Located off of the main corridor, the new career and technical education wing provides spaces specially designed for the programs that will available for study. The Audio/Visual studio is a special space, which will allow for student broadcasts and video production in a professional setting. Art classrooms are located in this wing as well, which allows for students to be involved in traditional art instruction as well as graphic arts, which will have its own computer lab spaces. The traditional art classrooms boast an abundance of natural light and their own covered courtyard area, for outdoor activities. All classrooms in this wing have windows to the corridor, which allow students to view the innovative approach these programs exhibit. Not only does this allow for student work to be displayed, it assists in generating interest in the programs themselves. As students walk from this area down the main corridor, they enter the new two-story classroom wings. The configuration of these two wings allows for all classrooms to receive natural light, and wider spaces along the corridors create natural congregation points for students, which keeps the flow of traffic unobstructed. The main corridor terminates at a large lobby space, located in front of the new Auditorium. The new performance venue with 750 seats will be constructed adjacent to the existing Cafetorium. It will include a fly loft as well as current sound and lighting capabilities, to allow for UIL performance events as well as a variety of musical and theater performances. The new fine arts wing including band hall will be located adjacent to the auditorium. Also accessed from the main lobby are the Cafetorium and Athletics area. The existing Cafetorium and stage will remain, allowing student dining to continue, as well as providing a venue for dinner theater or luncheon events. Alongside the existing competition gymnasium, a new competition gymnasium will be constructed with enough seats to house the entire student body. Raised, fixed seating will create a dramatic environment for athletic competition, and the two practice courts will allow more reasonable practice times to be available for students. A new Ag shop will be constructed at the back of the new gymnasium, which allows for direct access with trailers and large vehicles as these programs require. This access also connects to the drive that currently leads to the Ag barn. HIGH SCHOOL, JUNIOR HIGH & INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL ADDITIONS & RENOVATIONS KAUFMAN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT Safety and Security Currently, with the buildings connected without a secure pathway, exterior doors are required to be open for the majority of the day to provide student access. Also, the main entry to the school relies on a visitor to choose to check in at the main office prior to their intended destination. In order to address these issues, the design addresses security through a controlled access vestibule at the main entry, surveillance cameras throughout the facility, an enclosed connection to the buildings on campus, and access control on all exterior doors. O.P. Norman Junior High School Introduction O.P. Norman Junior High School is one of several schools planned to be renovated as part of the November 2014 Bond as a way to: Address an aging campus Provide appropriate instructional space for current capacity issues as well as future growth Increase safety and security The Junior High School is currently attached to Kaufman High School, without a proper separation of campuses. As part of the Kaufman High School project, this connection will be severed, allowing for both campuses to operate independently, and students to remain in their appropriate buildings. Portions of the existing High School, currently located in what will be part of the Junior High building, will be repurposed to house the Gary Campbell High School students. These students will have a separate entry and support spaces from the Junior High. The new Junior High will receive a portion of this vacated space as well, to address capacity issues. Renovation and repurposing of several interior spaces will address operational challenges and state standard deviations. Also, additional security features will be incorporated which increase the safety of the students and faculty, and exterior improvements are planned to elevate the aesthetic of the building. HIGH SCHOOL, JUNIOR HIGH & INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL ADDITIONS & RENOVATIONS KAUFMAN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT Aging Facilities and Student Capacity The renovations at the Junior High School campus are focused on repurposed space. As the student capacity has grown, there is a need for an additional science lab and associated prep area. This will be achieved by combining two traditional classrooms, and outfitting the lab with the proper furniture and equipment for today s instruction. The remaining labs will be retrofitted to meet current state standards. In addition, several classrooms from the vacated high school space will be allocated for the Junior High, adding to the available instructional space. Exterior improvements are slated for this campus as well. Once the connection to the High School is removed, there will be inevitable façade work that is required to address the newly exposed wall. In addition to the required modifications, aesthetic improvements are also desired to update the front façade, and allow the new construction of the High School to relate to the existing Junior High in a more cohesive manner. Safety and Security Currently, the administration area is not located at the main entry point of the campus. Repurposing of existing space will allow for the administration area to be relocated, and a controlled vestibule to be incorporated at the main entry. Surveillance cameras will be added to the facility, as well as access control on all exterior doors. The exterior of the building will not only receive some much-needed attention, but also additional exterior lighting to improve safety. Lucille Nash Intermediate School Introduction Lucille Nash Intermediate School is one of several schools planned to be renovated as part of the November 2014 Bond as a way to: Provide additional instructional space for future growth Increase safety and security Increase Student Capacity The growth in Kaufman ISD is expected to continue, which necessitates additional instructional space at this campus. In order to achieve this, two additional classrooms will be provided as well as additional restrooms. Access to the exterior will be maintained, and circulation will be improved via the new cross-corridor between the existing and new construction. Safety and Security As the administration area is located to the side of the main entry, there is not a way to control entry to the facility.
