1 Project Description/Project Title and Data: KEVIN I. SULLIVAN CAMPUS CENTER ADDITION & RENOVATION Medaille College - Buffalo, NY Functioning as Medaille College's campus heart, The Kevin I Sullivan Campus Center contains athletic facilities, the student union, primary dining facilities, and is the main venue for many of Medaille's various special events. The goals of the addition & renovation were two-fold; 1.) Enhance the existing facility to promote campus community & provide a more comfortable environment in which to gather, study, and eat, 2.) Increase the quality of the athletic facilities to a level representative of Medaille's high standing within Division III College Athletics. A growing student body, modest campus size, and "landlocked" location within the city of Buffalo dictated that each space have flexibility & adaptability to accommodate various events and activities. Renovation to the existing student center included relocating the campus bookstore to create larger, more open dining and gathering spaces, and to create a stronger physical & visual connection to the Main Gymnasium. New booth and counter seating was added to the existing & expanded dining areas to provide a variety of seating options. An underutilized second floor study area has been transformed into a focal point of the facility. Anchored by the fireplace, the ceiling clouds and custom furniture create an inviting location that acts as a "living room" for the campus. Visible from the lower level dining area, the lounge draws in students, faculty and staff and has proved very successful in creating a place where all spend much more time together in the Sullivan Center. The addition to the rear of the existing building provides new and upgraded spaces to the facility: a new Gymnasium/Events Center, President's Dining Room, Locker Rooms, and a large Fitness Center. Spaces have been arranged to allow views into each other to activate the facility and engage the users. The exterior of the addition seamlessly adjoins the existing building; matching the existing masonry & EIFS exterior finishes. Playfully adorned with Medaille's school colors, the new Gymnasium exterior further promotes a sense of community and provides a lasting impression of Medaille College to athletes, students, and visitors alike. 1

6 ADDITION EXTERIOR: This photograph, taken from the SE corner of the addition, highlights the second floor Fitness Room enclosed with curtain wall glazing to allow for a bright & comfortable environment to exercise in. The new gymnasium on the left side of the photograph is enclosed with Dryvit, finished to match the existing building, and is adorned with Medaille s school colors (blue and yellow). 8 ADDITION INTERIOR: President s Dining Room The Presidents Dining Room functions as a multi purpose space for the facility. In addition to functioning as the President s Dining Room for special functions; it is host to small lectures/guest speaker events, college board meetings, light aerobics classes, athletic team meetings, etc. Finishes in this spaces were kept simple & elegant; a cork wood floor, a highly durable woven vinyl coated polyester wall covering, & slotted drywall ceiling (concealing mechanical diffusers & lighting tracks). Dimmable track lighting was installed to allow for maximum flexibility for the various events within the space. Window slots around the space allow for limited view into adjacent spaces, such a the new gymnasium, lobby and fitness room; and help activate the space and facility. 9 ADDITION INTERIOR: Fitness Room The new fitness room provides student athletes with a much needed state of the art environment in which to train for their sport of choice, it also affords students & faculty/staff an opportunity to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The exposed & efficiently organized structure, ductwork, and lighting provide an open feeling in the space. The curtain wall glazing around the exterior walls, and white paint throughout provide a very bright & welcoming environment; acoustical ceiling panels between structural framing greatly minimizes noise pollution throughout the space. 10 RENOVATION INTERIOR: Lounge The renovated lounge, located on the second floor atrium space of the existing dining hall serves as a living room for students, faculty & staff alike. A custom fireplace, & elliptical acoustical plaster ceiling clouds serve to make the space more inviting and deaden noise from adjacent spaces, making this space more enjoyable and functional than the original configuration. A new Freshens café and seating space (located in the back left of the photo), along with various seating options enclosed by the ceiling clouds provide users with a plethora of options and make this space functional for many activities. 11 RENOVATION INTERIOR: Lounge This view of the lounge highlights the custom fireplace & custom elliptical booth seating on the right side of the photo, along with the custom elliptical couch on the left side. The elliptical ceiling shapes were also playfully carried through to the blue and yellow carpet patterns. 11
