SCM 7010 (A01) (3.0 CH) ADVANCED SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT SUMMER 2015 Effective August 2013, the University will ONLY use yur U f M email accunt fr fficial cmmunicatins, including messages frm the MBA Office, yur prfessrs, and ther University administrative ffices. CLAIM YOUR U f M EMAIL ACCOUNT at http://umanitba.ca/claimid It is YOUR respnsibility t check it daily fr ALL University cmmunicatin. All messages generated by Desire2Learn (D2L) are sent t this address. INSTRUCTOR Name: Dr. RajbirS. Bhatti Phne: Office Lcatin: 653 Drake Fax: Office Hurs: By appintment ver email Email: Rajbir.bhatti@umanitba.ca Class Time: Wednesday 6:15 9:30p COURSE DESCRIPTION This curse prvides students at the graduate level with an in-depth examinatin f the majr issues assciated with the management f supply chains. The curse cntent includes bth managerial and technical matters, and addresses issues such as the imprtance f supply chain management in meeting glbal cmpetitin, internet and e-business applicatin, supply chain integratin and relatinships, sharing risks and rewards, and the reductin f variance in supply chain perfrmance. Prerequisite: A degree in business r discipline related t supply chain management r apprval by instructr. COURSE OBJECTIVES Students will develp: 1) An understanding f the cmplexities assciated with the physical mvement f gds and hw they affect the missin f the firm; and 2) Knwledge f the cst trade-ff between different functins and activities within an rganizatin as well as with ther members f the supply chain.

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS Studies have cnsistently revealed that the learning curve is higher if learning fcuses n critical thinking and ratinale building. Hence, in this curse, we place a lt f emphasis n learning thrugh real life case studies, which in turn requires active participatin by the students. All cases in the curse pack, present a supply chain situatin wherein a decisin must be made. The challenge is t factr in the trade ffs and the parametric cnstraints f the situatin. There is n unique crrect answer t a case but there are definitely appraches that address the issues and recgnize the tradeffs invlved. Thus, the lack f a single crrect answer des nt imply that all suggestins are equally valid. Sme "Questins fr Cnsideratin" wuld be given t yu n D2L fr each case study. The purpse is t help yu frmulate yur mind abut certain imprtant issues in the case fr a cmprehensive and useful analysis. Yu MUST be prepared t address each questin in class by dnning the rle f the decisin maker and spell ut the real issue and cming up with a series f recmmendatins n what shuld be dne and why? That is, as the decisin maker, hw d yu plan t reslve the situatin? Apart frm the case study methd, ther methds may include Lectures, student presentatins, article discussins and individual/grup exercises. COURSE MATERIALS Text: Fawcett, Ellram and Ogden, Supply Chain Management: Frm Visin t Implementatin (2007). COURSE ASSESSMENT Class Participatin (In-Class Grup Wrk & Case Studies): In class grup wrk assigned by the instructr and Case Study discussins depend upn the active, effective participatin f the students. The student must get invlved and take a great deal f in fact, the primary respnsibility fr his r her learning. On the student s side, it is necessary that yu are cmmitted t the 4 Ps f student invlvement in class discussins: 1. Preparatin. If the student des nt read and analyze the case study/ in class grup wrk assignment, the discussin will mean little and nt lead t the learning envirnment we seek 2. Presence. If the student is nt present she r he cannt learn and, mre imprtant, cannt add her r his unique thughts and insight t the grup discussin. 3. Prmptness. Students wh enter the classrm late disrupt the discussin and deprecate the decrum f the teaching-learning prcess. 4. Participatin. Each student s learning is best facilitated by regular participatin. Mre imprtant, the case student has the respnsibility t share his r her understanding and judgment with the class t advance the grup s cllective skills and knwledge. 2

Discussin f the material in class is encuraged. In class, students will ften be divided int grups t analyze in-class grup assignments/case studies. These exercises in discussin based participative learning seek t prvide a mre in-depth understanding f specific business issues, and t imprve yur interpersnal, leadership, and presentatin skills. This prcess seeks t cnnect the classrm t "n-the-jb" perfrmance. Yur participatin in these exercises is vital t yur individual success and the success f the class. Thus, absences will wrk t yur detriment in class in the same way they d in the wrkplace. Yu will miss imprtant infrmatin and let dwn yur wrk team. Reading f the case studies befrehand and preparing perfunctry answers is encuraged. Students will receive the greatest benefit by cmpleting all the reading assignments in advance f class, by regularly attending the scheduled class, and by being active participants in classrm discussins. Sharing f pinins, ideas and questins is strngly encuraged and greatly benefits all participants. We expect yu t be prepared fr each and every class and t participate by making a "substantive cntributin" in a fair number f classes during the term. Examples include, but are nt limited t, being invlved in a discussin f assigned material, arguing yur pint f view during a case discussin, asking a relevant questin, suggesting an alternate viewpint, r redirecting ur attentin t smething else in need f discussin. Thus, yu d nt have t be a tp participant in each class, nr d yu have t have the "right answer" when yu d participate. Please d nt hesitate t speak simply because yu think yur ideas might be challenged; the class rm is the place fr such challenges. The participatin grade is a significant cmpnent f the final grading prcess and is intended t be a stimulant t discussin, nt a deterrent. On a rare (and exceptinal) ccasin, if yu are nt prepared fr a class and d nt wish t be called upn fr discussin and participatin, yu shuld let yur instructr knw befre class (preferably by e-mail), but please attend class anyways. Yu d nt have t explain why yu were unprepared. Please nte that attendance is nt the same as participatin. Seating & Name Tags: Please display yur name tags at all times in the class fr me t quickly remember yur names (this will be helpful in accurate grading fr the class participatin marks). Further, please chse yur fixed seating by the start f the secnd class (i.e. by May 13 th, 2015). Class Participatin fr each case study/weekly cntact shall be determined n a scale f 0 t 5, where a scre f 5 indicates a substantial cntributin fr the day and 0 indicates n cntributin. An average cntributin, such as nly building n pints made by thers, is wrth 2 n this scale. At the end f the curse, verall participatin will be awarded by adding each student s participatin scres fr all cases/weekly cntacts and then cnverting them t the percentage fractin alltted t class participatin (25%). Case summary: We expect ur students t discuss with their grups & be prepared fr all case studies (individually and in grups) prir t cming fr the scheduled class. As an incentive fr ding s, yu will be prvided 5% f the class participatin marks fr case summaries submitted by all students individually prir t the start f the discussin in the class. Case summaries must be legible and need nly be 1 page lng (hand written). 3

Exams: Exams will cnsist f multiple chice and/r shrt essay questins. One in class midterm exam will be cnducted in the middle f the curse (week 5). Any absence in the exams nt cvered by a valid excuse (per University plicy) may result in a grade f zer fr the exam and prbable failure fr the class. Prject (Written Reprt, Grup Presentatin): Each grup can cmprise f 4 students Students must frm their wn grups and infrm the curse instructr n r befre May12 th, 2015 (Tuesday) Any students wh fail t jin a grup till the abve said date, will be randmly allcated t a grup by the curse instructr Prject Presentatin Tpics: A 15 minute presentatin has t be given by each grup. This will be fllwed by 5 minutes f questins by the instructr and the ther grups. The presentatin tpics can be: 1. The Canadian prspective in the Keystne XL Prject-Facts, Fictin & the Rad Ahead 2. Warming f the Nrth: An Analysis f the Challenges and Opprtunities t Canadian Supply Chains 3. Any ther tpic f yur chice (Get clearance frm the instructr) The frmat f the prject reprt will be given separately by the instructr. Please adhere t the frmat. Quiz: A 15-20 minute nline quiz will be cnducted in each week f teaching (beginning the secnd week f teaching). The quiz will have multiple chice questins t be answered nline n yur laptps. Each quiz will be based n the text bk reading f the previus week. Later, yur scre n each quiz alng with the crrect answers will be sent t yu. Scres frm tp five quizzes will be cunted twards 5% f the final grade (i.e. 1% credit fr each f the tp five quizzes). Questins: All students are encuraged t bring questins, cncerns, and cmments t my attentin as sn as they arise. Yu can fix an appintment with me by email if yu have a query that must be discussed individually. 4
